Back when I was working I’d glance out the window at the subdivision behind our building, a pretty neighborhood with tree lined streets. Often there would be someone walking their dog and I’d be struck with such longing. I wanted to be out there walking my dog in the sunshine on a weekday morning, enjoying the breeze, the light, the freedom.
And that’s what I was remembering this morning as I walked my dog up our neighborhood street enjoying the late summer blue sky, the cool breeze, the quiet. The houses were largely silent, empty of their people.
People who were off at work while I was out walking my dog.
I recognize how lucky I am to be retired. Katie recognizes it too, though she’s too much a princess to admit she enjoys the extra walks, the extra treats, the extra belly rubs. But she clearly does.
On today’s walk through the neighborhood she was too busy sniffing pee-mail on one side of the road to notice the twelve geese standing in a driveway on the other side of the road. They turned as a group and silently moved up the driveway, away from the princess. I smiled at them and we kept moving. Out of the corner of my eye I saw another three geese over in the yard. I turned my head to look at them as Katie tugged me down the road.
They weren’t geese. Standing stock still were three sandhill cranes — probably a couple with this year’s offspring. Without movement they blended into the trees, silent watchers of the neighborhood, vigilant but not disturbed by the princess.
And me without my camera.
With not even a phone in my pocket, you’ll have to see exactly what Katie saw which is absolutely nothing. The little princess continued to pull me up the street, nose to the ground checking out the latest doggy news left by her friends earlier in the morning. I continued to smile as I was tugged along.
Cause I’m not trapped in the office on this beautiful Friday morning.

I know. It’s a wonderful thing. Never to be taken for granted!

it is a wonderful feeling – it does make me ad Reilly can’t go with me anymore but I still enjoy the walks – this morning I saw bats flying around – little tiny ones – they were so cute 🙂

The bats must have been fun to watch. I’m sorry Reilly can’t walk so far anymore. I know how much he loved going with you. Katie doesn’t walk very far anymore either, just up the street. I have to be careful because she gets tired (or at least she tries to look like she’s tired) soon, especially in the heat.

Love morning walks. I’ve learned not to go anywhere without at least my phone or point and shoot camera, but, sometimes I still forget.

Isn’t that true. I am continually reminded that I should have a camera of some sort with me all the time!

I’ve managed to have every Friday off this summer and have been loving that feeling of luxury, letting the day unfold slowly, walking the dog in the quiet streets. Too bad you didn’t get a picture of the cranes. What a cool experience!

It was cool. Though I’ve been close to cranes before, there are more and more of them here in the past years. I’ll have to find the links to a blog post or two where I featured them for you.

Susanne, I changed the header to show a shot of a crane family that I saw last year…just so it matches this morning’s story.

But we did see something through your words! I could picture the geese and the cranes as you were out on your morning walk. And Katie sniffing along, oblivious to the feathered creatures. 🙂
I enjoy that freedom too. It’s a shame we have to wait until we’re older to be given such a gift, but I suppose we had to earn it first to truly appreciate it.

I remember in 1994 when my folks retired I was so jealous…told my mom it wasn’t fair they didn’t have to go to work anymore…(OK, I was a bit immature)…and she told me I had to wait my turn. 🙂 🙂 🙂 I think about that a lot now.

This heat/humidity has been rough on Dallas. Generally, I just put him on the treadmill and let him go. He’s looking forward to some fall weather so he can sniff pee-mail again. Being self-employed is a bit like being retired, minus the complete freedom, of course!

Katie isn’t good in the heat or humidity either. We only go on very very short walks, early in the morning or in the evening. I think she’d freak entirely on a tread mill. I think being self-employed would mean you were NEVER really free, always something you could or should be doing. No 9-5 that’s for sure!

I’ve waited so long, seems like my entire life, working at jobs that didn’t do anything for me. So now it’s even more special to be doing things I love.

I loved some of my jobs, others not so much. I really loved freelancing, but it can be stressful, too. It has been a wonderful thing to be truly retired. I loved walks with Miss Sadie and the Cowboy. It was hard, after he died, for Miss Sadie to go on some of her favorites. So we grieved together for a bit, and now she’s gone to summer camp with her Aunt Mary and I have not been walking at all. I feel naked traipsing around in the woods without a dog. But I’ve started to make myself go. I always feel better afterward – but I always miss them. It was nice to see you and Katie!

It was nice to see you too, glad I was able to provide a dog for a day or so. Should have left her with you! 🙂 🙂 🙂 Hope the house project is moving along finally. And yes I could see it might seem weird traipsing around the woods without a dog…but a walk down the road wouldn’t be so weird. Still sad without the crew, but not so weird.
Say hello to Cora for me!

Okay I’m a bit confused… I’d swear I saw a picture of your cranes on FB? Did you come across the family a second time?

I had my taste of what retirement will be like in, hopefully, less than 2 decades. I’m going to love it, yes I am. Until then, permission to continue living it vicariously through yours!

Permission granted. I hope it’s less than 2 decades too. Though I think you like your job a whole bunch more than I liked mine.
