Change Is Hard

…but change is certain.

Holding time still

Used to be full. Will be again.

Used to be full. Will be again.

This morning I walked out of the gym wearing shorts, probably the last time I’ll be able to do that for awhile. After all, it’s mid-November. And though today we hit a record high of 72 degrees (22.22 Celsius) I know this weekend we’ll get cold rain, maybe even a bit of snow.

After the frost.

After the frost.

As I left the gym, moving out into the warm sunshine, I wished that it could stay this warm and sunny until next spring. Then I noticed the business next door was playing the Trans-Siberian Orchestra’s Carol of the Bells. Loudly. The music was rolling out the open door and I was reminded that Christmas is right around the corner.

End of season colors.

End of season colors.

Time is marching on whether I like it or not.

I remember my mom wanting to stop time when we were growing up. She was already mourning our youth before we moved away. Sometimes I do the same, and I certainly hear other parents voice that sentiment.

Autumn morning light.

Autumn morning light.

But time slides away and before you know it the holidays are here, and then the next year, and the one after that. Years fly by, seasons even faster. The sun sets on today before I realize it’s potential. I want it all to slow down.

Unless it’s snowing. If it’s snowing then time needs to scream forward into spring.

Seriously.

Hanging onto fall.

Hanging onto fall.

I'm a long time banker having worked in banks since the age of 17. I took a break when I turned 50 and went back to school. I graduated right when the economy took a turn for the worst and after a year of library work found myself unemployed. I was lucky that my previous bank employer wanted me back. So here I am again, a long time banker. Change is hard.

  1. Nice time flies. Not so nice time, not so much.

  2. I’m not a big fan of snow, either … minus the first one of the season. That one’s always special and beautiful (and Dallas loves it so much!). What a gorgeous shot of that evergreen with the sunlight on it just so!!

    • I agree that the first snow of any significance is special. Especially since now I don’t have to drive to work in it. But it gets old pretty fast. I need to do more skiing. When I lived in the UP I cross country skied every weekend, and I didn’t mind winter so much. But I was younger then. Much younger.

  3. Katie’s (I hope I have remembered you dog’s name correctly) coat is colour coordinated with the background. A dog chameleon!

  4. As I write this, the first snow flakes of the season are falling. Between excitement of those first flakes and dreading the driving in the coming months…I want to fast forward to spring too….but the snow is pretty… I just need to push myself to get out in it!

Time is definitly passing too quickly – My mom used to say: “life is like a roll of toilet paper – the closer to the end you get, the faster it goes!” I suddenly know what she meant.

I love the picture of Katie! She looks quite at home there!

    • I like your mom’s saying. Perfect! 🙂 My grandmother used to say something similar too, and I, too, know what she means now. Katie does indeed feel right at home in the fields and woods around here. She pretends she’s a princess but she’s a bit of a tomboy too.

    I did that, too!

I want my babies back as babies! xxx HAPPY THANKSGIVING, Dawn.

    • I know my mom missed us something terrible once we were all out on our own. She said she liked us better as adults! LOL I didn’t get back to visit as much as I should have. I wish I had gone south more. I hope you get to see your grown babies frequently! Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family too!

  6. Yes I remember those Indian Summer Michigan days. Precious. I remember sitting on the front porch steps in shirtsleeves just before Thanksgiving when my oldest son (43) was a baby. Then…bam….usually snow for Thanksgiving. Very different once I moved west, but sometimes I MISSED the snow…but I never miss driving in it.

    • Ha! Friday it was 72. Saturday and today the high was around 30. And windy. And wet. Today, moving from the car to a building in a wind tunnel I couldn’t remember why I live in Michigan. 🙂

  7. Katie is so pretty! The fierce wind yesterday is taking what is left of the leaves with it- and the cold has arrived. here. The years do fly by….
