Some people, at the beginning of each year, pick a word they’d like to focus on for the next twelve months. Last year I picked stretch, hoping to remind myself as often as possible to try new things, keep an open mind, think about stuff in different ways.
I wasn’t always successful – this past year has been a challenge for me, especially in the open mind department. But I did do a lot of different things, traveled more than usual and tried to spend as much time as possible in my tent in the woods.
Now here it is February 1 and I don’t know what my word is for 2018. It hasn’t seemed to be a priority to me to figure one out. Or maybe it’s just that nothing has popped into my head. I guess I want the word choice to be easy without the more difficult analysis and deep thought that might well be required.
I guess I’m still stretching.
I took a water color class in January, four weeks, an hour and a half a week, held at our local community center just half a mile down the road. The last session was last night and I brought all my ‘projects’ home.
None are works of art, most aren’t even finished. The purpose of the class was to introduce us to different techniques used in water color, not to produce a stunning piece of frame-able art.
Good thing that wasn’t the goal.
Anyway, my purpose in talking about all this is to remind you (and me) to mix it up a little. Don’t worry your way through today the same way you worried your way through yesterday. Pause and take a moment to breath. Look for something fun to do, even if it’s only a few minutes a week.
Try something new. Make something pretty or interesting or sweet. Spend time with other people, share a laugh or a cookie or a pot of paint.
During these dark winter days spread a little color in your life and share it with us. We could all use the pick me up as we move toward spring.

Good on you for trying new things. I actually really like that last one in a star shape. Very nice use of colors and I love the simplicity. (I have zero talent in painting or music, so I appreciate seeing what others can do.)

I like to try new things. The star shaped thing was a snowflake…instructor had a book full of closeup photos of snow and this was my interpretation. Of course I’d do it differently if I had to do it over again and maybe sometime I will. I wish there were more adult classes like this around. I love being in ‘school’ especially when there are no final exams!

Great reminder! I need to be more comfortable trying new things. 🙂

I do new things that are fun. I don’t like new things that are scary. Like skydiving and bungee jumping, those I will skip.

My brain and body have apparently decided that we are a bear, wanting only to hibernate for winter. Perhaps I’ll stretch in the spring. Good for you for getting out there and doing things!

Well to be honest, each Wednesday night after supper I’d settle in and then wish I didn’t have to go back out into the night to go to the class. I feel that way on Tuesday nights with band too, but once I get there it’s all good.

Such wise advice, Dawn. I’m feeling quite cabin-bound even though I don’t mind winter and get out and try to enjoy it. But I really like your idea of stretching and trying something new. Make something pretty. Yes.

I’ve been thinking about that word, and I think it would be a very good word for 2018!

Good advice, Dawn. Especially during these winter days, it’s really advisable to stretch. I think it’s great that you’re doing water colors.

When I lived ‘up north’ I learned to cross country ski and snow shoe just to get myself outside during the long dark winter. Down here we don’t have that much snow…and I’m older and a bigger wimp…so inside stretching is more my speed.

Another great reminder, Dawn. I love to learn and often forget to do that. Sometimes I fret about doing something that’s new and worry that I’ll fail or look stupid. But I remind myself that no one was born knowing ANYTHING! And so we all learn, everyone, everywhere. Sometimes we learn a whole different thing than we thought we set out to learn, like you learned about watercolors rather than how to make great art. Though I too like that pear a lot! Thanks for sharing your road. 🙂

Thank YOU for stopping by! I like watercolors but they’re so HARD! LOL. It’s like they have a mind of their own and your plan for the piece has no bearing on what actually happens! I feel like I’m stupid too, when I try new stuff, especially if it’s related to a computer. And I know it’s silly that I am continually surprised that other people are as confused as me. I always think I’m the only one.

I loved ‘trying’ to paint watercolors in college. They’re unforgiving, no do overs. You’re doing well. Congratulations on another artistic endeavor.

They certainly are unforgiving, and they take a lot more planning than I really want to go. There’s no spontaneity. But they’re fun and pretty.

Back when I first read this, there was a line from a song that I knew applied to your search for the right word. And then, try as I might, I couldn’t remember it,. I tried a search for “but the words won’t come lyrics” (although I wasn’t sure that those were the words)–amazing as I tweaked the search a bit over and over how very many songs say something about “the words won’t come.” Apparently a universal problem. But just yesterday while driving home I suddenly remembered the lyrics — “Why do I find it hard to write the next line? Oh I want the truth to descend!” Yeah, I know the feeling, why can’t the sky just open up and give me the answer, because I’m sure not coming up with it on my own. 🙂
