Snow attack on the back yard.

It’s snowing here in lower Michigan. Nothing surprising about that, it is after all early February. They say we’ll get five or more inches and that it will snow all day.

Maybe all weekend.

With the weather forecast in mind I stopped at the grocery store on my way home last night. I and about a hundred of my best friends shopped mindlessly, wandering up and down the aisles not sure what I wanted, not sure what I had at home, just sure that I needed something.

Goldfinch scans his food options.

Pushing my shopping cart across the parking lot into the wind driven snow I noticed a woman in a car driving out of the lot. Something about the way she held her head, or her haircut, something about her made me think, for a moment, that it was Janet Yellen. Her last day as Chair of the Federal Reserve was just last week.

Sometimes things are just upside down.

Obviously, now that she had time, she needed to stock up before the snow arrived just like me. It didn’t occur to me that it was highly unlikely she’d be in my town in rural Michigan on a snowy Thursday night.

This much snow makes me want to drink too.

No, the reason I discounted the whole idea was that certainly Janet Yellen doesn’t shop for her own groceries.

Snow can be very isolating.

Or does she?

It’s warmer in a crowd.

I'm a long time banker having worked in banks since the age of 17. I took a break when I turned 50 and went back to school. I graduated right when the economy took a turn for the worst and after a year of library work found myself unemployed. I was lucky that my previous bank employer wanted me back. So here I am again, a long time banker. Change is hard.

  3. Your bird photos are so beautiful. I think all the goldfinches must be there with you, enjoying your feeders. I have not seen any here this winter.

  4. I LOVE the pics!!! It’s been a busy bird few days here, too. Looks about the same.

  5. I sympathize, Dawn. I and dozens of strangers were wandering the aisles of Walmart this morning, in preparation for the predicted “ice event” later this evening. I think I got everything needed so I can hole up for a few days. At least our ground is clear … right now. Stay safe and warm!

    • Hope you got what you want. Or what you thought you wanted. We ate the frozen pizza tonight. No going anywhere today. But the snow is abating so I hope I can get out to visit Aunt Vi tomorrow. It’s been snowing since around 2 this morning. Pretty though, and light and fluffy, so fun for us to play in.

  6. The photos are great, Dawn. Sorry about all the snow. And for Janet Yellen probably snagging that last loaf of bread that you wanted…

  8. I love our bird feeders. In the winter, those cute little juncos are my favorite.

On a sad note, we have a Cooper’s hawk flying around. The other day he was sitting on the bird feeder. 😦

    • Yeah. These Cooper hawks have really figured out the feeder situation. All the birds were frolicking the other day, all kinds, and the blue jays all let loose with their “predator” cry. I looked out and there wasn’t a bird to be seen. Just one downy clinging motionless to the underside of a wide branch. It took only a second to see a beautiful Cooper parked only a few feet higher, scanning and wondering where everybody went! I scooted it away and then sent my dogs out. Haven’t seen her again. But I think she flies over sometimes. A Heck of a lot of birds make themselves scarce in a hurry every now and again.

    • I had to go look up what a Cooper’s hawk looked like. It’s possible in years past that I’ve seen one around our feeder too.

  9. Pretty birds! Great photos.

I am worried. I sent the Cowspot mom a barkday present and an email amd I havent heard back from her. Not sure if I had her right mailing address but the gift isnt that expensive so its ok if it got lost in the mail. We are just concerned for her cause we didnt see an email response from her. Do you have a way to contact her to see if she is ok? Thanks

As much as I love the beauty of snow, I’m relieved we’re having our first totally sunny day since January 3rd today. Yipee! Off to see some parks. 🙂
