Katie and I like to go exploring, mostly looking for good places to take a walk, but sometimes just to see what’s there. And along the way there have been a few barns.
You know me and barns.
I’ve driven by some of them because there was nowhere safe to park. That always breaks my heart. I imagine pulling in a driveway and asking whoever was there if it is OK to take a picture of their barn. “Why?” I imagine them asking me and I realize I have no real reason to need an image of their barn. I just want it. So I don’t stop unless I can do it anonymously and from a safe distance.
This red barn was sitting right in front of me while I was stopped in construction traffic last week.
I shot it through my dirty windshield, just as traffic was beginning to move. At the time I thought maybe I’d drive back out that way to see if there was somewhere to park so that I could take a more studied shot. But tonight I decided that the through the windshield image wasn’t that bad.
And you’ve seen this last one before. A couple weeks ago I saw it, and turned around, parked on a side road and walked a country block to shoot it. Along the way a huge dog in someone’s back yard snarled and barked and I realized that probably walking along any country road was a stupid idea. Because down here hardly any dog is contained, and I was lucky this one couldn’t get over the fence.
Still…it’s a beautiful barn.

Barns are wonderful! If I had a barn and someone asked me if they could photograph it, I’d be really pleased, although I’d make sure that’s actually what they did and not sneak around stealing chicken poop or something stupid. I love your words and your photos Dawn. 🙂

I wonder if people really would be pleased that someone wanted to photograph their property. Things are so scary now, with such divisiveness that I’m hesitant to approach a stranger about anything.

I don’t know that I’ve ever taken her in a barn. I’m sure she’d like to do that though, lots of good smells in a barn.

Horses AND a barn … perfect! I’m with you about those unchained dogs, though.

Bert and I both love old barns. We’ve been traveling through East Tennessee lately, and barns always make us take notice. Something historic about these old grand dames, I guess. And the stories they could tell! Thanks for sharing yours with us.

You’re welcome. My sister used to live in East Tennessee, she loved it there. Sure is pretty country.

Beautiful photos! For me, it’s old old buildings, the ones that are falling down being the very best.

Yes, I remember a series of photos you did of an old house. Seems like you went inside as well. Loved those.

That goes back always – it was when my son and I were wandering around the countryside one day.

You were braver than I’ve ever been, going inside an abandoned building. But I always think about the stories that are held in abandoned houses in particular. Someone’s dream was there once.

I suspect most people wouldn’t mind having their barns photographed, and may even be used to people asking. But I don’t feel comfortable doing it either. That red barn looks like it’s a quilt barn. (The painted square above the door.)

I should learn more about quilt barns. I saw quite a few barns with something like this painted over the door when I drove through TN, but never where I could get a photo.
Thank you so much for stopping by the blog for such a long time this morning…you spent a good deal of time here and I appreciate it and your comments and your blog very much!

Have you been to Russell Cross roads barn yet?

No we haven’t been to Russell Cross yet. We’ll make it, probably the next time we’re down in AL. Which barn do you know?
