Change Is Hard

…but change is certain.

Resolution, bucket list, or….??

As usual this January there’s been a lot of talk about resolutions, bucket lists, and goals. Some people are setting expectations while others are happier letting 2019 evolve organically.

It was 51degrees in January, the sheep were loving the sun.

I’m still contemplating the whole issue.

I definitely don’t like resolutions, have never kept one in my life. But I do think that I would like to have a written idea of things I want to do this year.

Not a cloud in the sky.

Not a ‘to-do’ list per se. But something in writing to remind me of good (or who knows, maybe not so good) ideas. Things that occur to me as I’m reading, or driving, or dreaming, that I might forget over time.

Nothing that I have to do. Just things that I think I’d like to do. Or maybe something I might like to explore. Or even something I just want to research while I decide if it’s bucket list worthy.

Winter can wear a barn down.

Some people object to the term bucket list, inferring it’s a list of things to get done prior to death. I can see that. Maybe I’ll rename it. Maybe it can be “My list of interesting, fun and stupendous stuff to try in 2019.’

Yea. That sounds better.

No snow protects these fields. Yet.

So, what’s going to be on this list of stupendous stuff? I’m still working that out, but it’s beginning to occur to me that it can be ever changing. After all, stupendous doesn’t reveal itself only in January.

Sweet little barn sits alone.

Photos for this post were done today as I was practicing with my new long lens. I didn’t find a lot of barns on this exploration, but enough to get the feel of it.

I’m pretty sure some of my stupendous list will revolve around learning more about what this new camera can do.

And to find more barns.

Sunshine, new camera and barns.

I'm a long time banker having worked in banks since the age of 17. I took a break when I turned 50 and went back to school. I graduated right when the economy took a turn for the worst and after a year of library work found myself unemployed. I was lucky that my previous bank employer wanted me back. So here I am again, a long time banker. Change is hard.

  1. Barns! Yay! New lens! Yay! Hope you find awesome things to do in 2019.

    • Still figuring out this camera. It’s frustrating, for instance, I think these photos are more washed out, the color not quite right. But I took a class yesterday that might help. These were all taken with auto settings because I couldn’t figure out how to read the light meter in the new camera…and had trouble changing the f stop and shutter speed…but I’ll get there.

  2. You can practically check two things off your list already. What else you got there, Dawn? 😀

  3. Your new camera and lens look like keepers to me – you do such a great job with them! I’m one of those that doesn’t care for the term “bucket list” – my reasons may not be sensible, but they just are what they are. Maybe I should make two lists – “wants” and “needs”. Except truly the “needs” list would be pretty blank.

  4. What a lovely day you had for exploring your new camera and showing us some great barns! We’ve got that kind of day today — 50s, sunny, not much wind. Practically perfect in every way (makes me think about putting seed in the dirt, though I know it’s far too early for planting!)

  5. Love these barns. Like the idea of a list- I do that every summer when school is out. Love checking things off. In that case it’s a lot “to dos”- the main one “getting to the beach”!! 😀 Fun and stupendous sounds good.

  6. What fun. We are considering a new lens too. Remind me what kind of camera and what lens did you choose? I love barns but perhaps bird photography is in your future…and their stories. I know you’ve shared some pretty ones.

    • I used to use a Cannon, Bruce got me a Nikon and I’m still figuring it out. It’s the new mirror-less camera, Nikon Z6. (there’s also a Z7, but it’s more $ and he didn’t think there was that much better about it.) Lens I was using was a zoom, 70-300.

  8. I don’t know about resolutions or bucket lists either. Interesting, fun and stupdendous sounds much better–and less stressful. 🙂

    • I’m going with less stress this year. Not that 2018 was particularly stressful, not that I remember anyway, but why not head into the future looking to destress your life? Is destress a word?

  9. I just do a one word intention. I do have a photo bucket list, I think northern lights and lightening is still on that list! I love your barns., I like to photograph them also. Hi to Katie girl, pat her head for me. New camera, I will have to read backwards if you wrote about it! Happy New year!

    • I do a one word intention too…most years. Last year was ‘stretch,’ this year I’m going to use the word ‘move.’ I love love love barns, sometimes I think I’ll run out of barns to shoot, but there always seems to be more wherever I go. Well, almost wherever. Katie says HI and Happy New year!

PS: Bruce got me a Nikon Z6. Mirror-less. Still figuring out how to do stuff….these were all shot on automatic settings and I think they’re sort of flat….but I’m working on that.

  10. Finding interesting stuff more organically definitely sounds Zen.
