It’s a basic in photography, mastering the depth of field, the part of your photo that will be in focus. It took me years to be able to remember how to do this.
It finally clicked; the lower the Fstop (aperture) number the narrower the depth of field, which creates that wonderful blurry background we all love so much.
In this particular shot I found out that an aperture set at 4 (the lowest this lens will go) was just a little too narrow, I couldn’t get enough of the apple in front in focus for my taste. Going up to 4.5 did the trick for me.

The technical aspects of photography always confuse me. I can’t even remember what the aperture does and all that. I’ve tried several times to learn it. I always forget.

I could never remember it either, for years. Then I read a digital camera book, the first couple chapters and it clicked. That was the day before I went to a basic camera class (because I had this new camera and I couldn’t figure anything out) and it clicked again. So now I think I have it. The aperture is the size of the opening that lets the light in. The confusing part is that the lower the fstop #, the bigger the hole… so more light is let in. But I started with just the concept that the lower the fstop # the less depth of field.

Thanks for the refresher, Dawn. I took photography back in college and loved it, but when you don’t have an SLR camera anymore, you forget things. Great capture!

Yea, phone cameras are getting so good now I question whether I need a SLR…but it’s so much FUN to mess with I’d miss it…at least for now.

I really must learn how to use the settings on my Nikon. I let the automatic lens do its thing and I just zoom in or out. 🙂
