How do you picture Florida? Sun, swaying palms, white sands, blue water, attractions filled with laughing crowds and roller coasters, poolside drinks, pulsating bars, sunscreen and colorful umbrellas?
Sounds good.
But if that’s what you’re focused on then you’re missing an awful lot of authentic Florida.
My husband and I are visiting relatives in a quieter part of the state. We have been staying at a fishing camp on a beautiful lake north of Tampa.
Each of the past three mornings I’ve gone outside early in the morning to see what the sunrise had to offer. This morning’s was the most colorful, but Monday and Tuesday morning were softly pretty too.
Yesterday we walked the neighborhood and enjoyed the moody skies just before a thunderstorm rolled in.
This place has the feel of old Florida, when times were simpler and small things got noticed. A time before Disney World and all inclusive resorts.
As my husband and I enjoyed the company of an extended family we let the crazy world go on by, kept the TV off, didn’t read the news, and sat into the evening telling old family stories and enjoying good food.
Not a bad way to begin a vacation.
Tomorrow we’re going to see a baseball game at the Tiger spring training camp and then we’ll figure out what we’re going to do next.
Not to say we’re entirely ignoring those white sand beaches and blue skies. No, I think at least a peek at the Gulf is on the list.
After all, we are in Florida.

I like authentic Florida. Barry says if we ever go to Florida by ourselves we’re visiting authentic Florida. It’s different than Fort Myers Beach.

Very different. And if he likes to fish you might want to stay at this camp.

Have a wonderful time. Your views of the lake are stunning dawn. Especially the one with the reflecting clouds. Love Herman 🙂

Herman was a character, he was out on the dock every morning in case someone wanted to hand off some fish. I didn’t actually see him get anything, but the fish camp manager said he regularly stole fish if he could get away with it. Obviously it worked or he wouldn’t be sitting there every day.
The reflecting clouds were some of my favorite shots that day too, those were taken with my cell phone.

Old Florida is great. We go to Apalachicola to get our fix. The photos are great but I especially love the pier with the gorgeous clouds reflecting on the water. Yup, the Gulf is my home and I love it. So glad you are enjoying it, too.

That sounds familiar. I think my folks might have gone there too.

Winter vacations to warmer climates are certain life savers. Mine is ending but it was great. Enjoy yours!

We are enjoying it, but oddly I am ready to go home. Too much traffic, too much heat, too much everything….

I do get that. I always think one of the good things about leaving home is coming back home – most of the time.

The stillness of that final sunrise photo is incredible. I can feel my pulse calming as I stare at it. Incredible. Lucky you to enjoy this quieter part of Florida.

Sounds (and looks) like a lovely vacation to me. Getting away for a while and unplugging from the rat race offer the best kind of rest (too bad the princess couldn’t join you!)

Wouldn’t be quite so peaceful if the princess were along for the ride. Plus she doesn’t like the heat and it’s been hot! 86 today…

I’d like to go back to that part of Florida and spend some time taking pictures of the farming and ranching aspect. So much wide open space with big blue skies and cows and barns…oh the barns…
