The misadventures of a Katie-girl

Katie here. HEY! It’s not my fault if I had a few unsettling adventures around here. It’s not like mama takes me anywhere fun after all.

Happy at my park.

First I thought I was going on an adventure and I ended up at camp for a whole week while they were off frolicking in Florida. I like Florida, I’ve been there three times, I love to run on the beach and stuff. Plus my boyfriend Mr. Reilly is there. So I don’t get why I couldn’t go with them.

Me, my boyfriend Mr. Reilly and his little brother Denny on our first beach adventure way back in 2017!

So I showed them. The morning after I got home I talked mama into taking me on a walk. She was tired cause she just flew home herself, but she felt guilty (as she should) for making me stay at camp, so she took me up the street.

Me in my yard, which is not an adventure mama!

I was doing my sheltie prance, butt wagging, sniffing all the good stuff like usual when suddenly I slowed down. Mama thought that was odd. Then I turned around and looked at her and threw up! And then I threw up two more times!

Then I just lay down in the middle of our street and I started to quiver all over.

I told mama not to show anyone my tummy!!

Mama said that was not normal. And even though we were only about four houses away from home she called my dad and he came and got us. Then she called the vet.

So the next car ride I get was to the vet! This is not an adventure mama! They poked me and looked in places no princess should allow, and they took my blood. I didn’t give permission for any of this, but I felt kinda miserable so I couldn’t argue much.

I guess my backyard is better than nothing.

The vet couldn’t come up with anything, but mama had a sinking feeling cause I had an episode just like this in 2015, also one day after being sprung from camp. We didn’t figure out anything then either.

I finally convinced mama to take me to my park.

So the next day I was feeling all happy again, but mama put me on a low fat wet food for awhile just to see. Boy that was good! And when I stayed happy for several days mama did a bad thing.

She scheduled me to get my teeth cleaned, and while I was out she asked them to do an ultrasound of all my innards!

So the next week I find myself at the vet again! This is so not fair, especially because this time daddy left me there! Mama couldn’t even come because she fell on some ice and had both hands and wrists wrapped up in splints and she didn’t feel so good herself.

I would like to say, for the record, that mama’s fall was not my fault!

My park needs my inspection more regularly!

Anyway, I got all sleepy and stuff and when I woke up I didn’t feel so good and my tummy was cold! Mama and daddy came to get me and I was sort of happy but kinda confused. The vet said he didn’t see anything on the ultrasound, but he’d send it off for a better look by an expert.

All I wanted to do was get out of there.

I watched two sandhill cranes very carefully. Not going to chase them though, cause they are bigger than me!

I got home and I slept and slept and slept. But when I went out to do my business my #2 was liquid. And you know what? It’s been four days now and it’s still not right. But the vet said the ultrasound didn’t show anything abnormal.

Sigh.

Mama and daddy are talking about my poo all the time now and deciding what to do. They have even cancelled their next adventure because they don’t want to send me back to camp. Score one for Katie!

They say they might have to take me back to the vet. Uh oh. Minus one for Katie!

Trying to look cute so they don’t take me to the vet again.

Somehow that’s not a win for me, ya know? So I’m doing my best to produce a normal poo for them so we can get on with some fun stuff. Mama did take me to my park yesterday for a short walk around the pond. That’s where most of these pictures come from. It was a beautiful day and I was very very very happy to be there.

We didn’t get to walk all the way around the park because mama’s hands are still wrapped up and her mittens don’t fit. She is a wimp!

Mama says if I straighten up my act (and if her hands ever heal) we’ll do something fun cause spring is almost here. Heck I told her, I like cold weather, we need to be out there enjoying it right now!

All that poo talk made me sleepy.

So that’s what I’ve been up to. I hope all of you are having a much better end to your winter than mama and me. She says to watch out for black ice. I say to watch out for car rides to the vet!

Talk later, I got stuff to do now….maybe even a #2!

Your gal Katie.

I’m outta here people! I’ve got adventures to plan!

I'm a long time banker having worked in banks since the age of 17. I took a break when I turned 50 and went back to school. I graduated right when the economy took a turn for the worst and after a year of library work found myself unemployed. I was lucky that my previous bank employer wanted me back. So here I am again, a long time banker. Change is hard.

  1. It does sound like she picked up a tummy virus….it happens a lot with doggies that get boarded. It’s a bit like a person At work coming in with a tummy bug and over the next few days everyone in the office comes down with it. I know she’s up to date on all her shots but if she keeps having the loose stools maybe get them to check for parvo. The shots protect them from getting it bad but occasionally they can get a weak form of it……highly unlikely though….I think she just has a plain old tummy bug and those cast last 5-7 days.

  4. Poor Katie. Even princesses get sick now and then, my girl. Still, you might want to slowly return to some crunchy kibbles rather than all soft, wet food (to firm up the #2, you know). The runs are nothing to laugh at when you’ve got flowing skirts back there! Here’s hoping both you and your mama heal real soon!

  5. I wonder whether the loose stools are related to the switch in diet? Still, I wouldn’t expect it to go on for several days. Poor Katie, and doubly poor Mama. Heal up, everyone.

  6. you poor sweetheart! Hoping you are on the mend soon. That’s strange that the same thing happened when you went to camp before. Dakota got sick last summer from a new food and the Vet had him on boiled potatoes and boiled chicken for a few days (not rice, but boiled potatoes)……maybe Mama could try that? Hoping you feel better soon!

  7. Oh my, things at your house haven’t been going well at all, have they? Did you have a bout of stress at camp, or maybe another puppy there wasn’t feeling so good? Get better, Katie, so your mama can stop worrying and you can have an adventure.

    • My wrists seem to be slow to feel better…but I can take her for walks while wearing splints. Not so good at picking her up though, that hurts and sets me back. So now she knows she can be stubborn and I’m likely to have to go along with whatever she wants. Dangerous for a princess to know that.

  10. Oh, Katie–how awful for both you and your mama. And, by that I mean how awful for mostly you. I think camp for you should be off-limits from now on. I mean, did your mama get sick when she came back from Camp Florida? I rest my case….

  11. Katie needs to be thankful that her parents are proactive and did the ultrasound. So glad nothing came of it.
As for your writing, this had me in stitches, royally good stuff.

  12. Hi Katie, I bet you had a bug or something or maybe just anxiety! I hope your poops get formed soon. When you vomited if it was bile yellow and foamy I would put you on boiled hamburger and rice. That was Chance’s diet for his last few months.
I hope your Mama ‘s hands feel better soon. I hope you don’t have to go back to camp at all, maybe you need a pet sitter! If I lived in your area I would pet sit you! 🙂

    • Thank you, she would be honored to be cared for by you guys. Her vomit was made up of her entire breakfast, though it was 5 hours since she had eaten. The vet wasn’t concerned she still had her breakfast pretty much undigested that many hours later.

  13. Oh poor Katie and poor Momma!! I always put my doggies on boiled boneless chicken cutlets and I would buy containers of white rice from the Chinese take out. It did help to get things back to normal most times. Are your wrists sprained? Broken? How awful. I do hope you both heal up soon. ❤

  15. Hi Dawn. I’m late reading this. Hoping Katie is feeling better and hope your out of the splints and feeling better now. Just wanted to tell you what I’ve used for diarrhea with my dogs. I know Katie’s case is different, but it seems like once they start it, it’s hard to stop it. Once when I was in AZ Joy got the worst case of the big D, ever. I took her to the emergency vet. They did give some shot, but also this stuff called Proviable. It’s probiotics in paste and pill form. Joy got better right away. Then Blue Sky…he had a milder case but I couldn’t seem to get it to go away. Got stuff from my vet here in CA and it didn’t work. Then I discovered the Proviable kit is on Amazon, and it’s the exact same thing I got from the vet in AZ. I ordered it and it worked. I also gave him something called ‘Firmup’ from Amazon. It’s dehydrated pumpkin and apple pectin that I added to his food. Now I keep these things on hand jic. Might be worth a try if yor’re…er….if Katie is still having a problem.

    • Thank you Micky! These sound like good options to keep on hand. Her #2 is almost back to normal, but it’s taken more than a week and it’s still soft, but not runny anymore. Do you add this to Blue Sky’s food daily now even when there’s no problem?
