Change Is Hard

…but change is certain.

Birding around

I have all these photos, taken during our March 31st snowstorm and now it’s feeling warmer and the snow is long gone and if I don’t post these soon I never will.

Yes, the snow is gone, at least down here in Southeast Michigan. Not to say it won’t be back. But at least we’re not still covered in snow like our friends to the north.

Last week we a were enjoying a beautiful day when I noticed this out my kitchen window…

“Seems a little small, lady. Do you have anything with three bedrooms and two baths?”

…and the next day the view out my kitchen window looked like this:

“Brrrrr….I should have migrated South.”

I spent much of the morning sitting in my nice warm living room taking pictures of frantic birds landing on the feeders.

“It’s a smorgasbord!”

Eventually I put the camera on a tripod, sat on the sofa, and used my phone to release the shutter in order to get these shy gold finches.

It was so much fun!

I never know exactly what I’m going capture when I’m trying to shoot birds. Sometimes I’m surprised when I download everything and take a look. This one made me laugh.

Take off!

I know professional bird photographers spend hours and hours preparing for a particular bird shoot…and it takes a bit of luck too. I feel pretty lucky that I can sit here and watch all these little guys stop by for a visit.

I hope you enjoyed my birds as much as I do!

If we’re lucky this was the last snowy day around here for awhile.

I'm a long time banker having worked in banks since the age of 17. I took a break when I turned 50 and went back to school. I graduated right when the economy took a turn for the worst and after a year of library work found myself unemployed. I was lucky that my previous bank employer wanted me back. So here I am again, a long time banker. Change is hard.

  1. Wonderful shots. I like the slideshow. It’s things like that that make me periodically consider switching over to wordpress from Blogger. But allllll that conversion work….. ugh-a-roonies. There are instructions for it, in more than one place (e.g., https://firstsiteguide.com/move-blogger-to-wordpress/), but I can’t even find the energy to sit down and finish the last editing pass on my Trust, so what am I thinking?

Just that I enjoy the looks of your blog so much. Plus I figure I’ll write better under wordpress, because WORDpress, you know.

    Anyway–enjoyed these. 🙂

    • I’ve been at WordPress since almost the beginning. Started with another student in library school and he hosted for awhile until I took up too much of his space. Have been at WordPress (his suggestion) since maybe 2010 or so. Used up the free space last year and now pay, but it’s not a lot if I remember right. Would you have to transfer everything over? Or could you start anew?

  3. Love your photos. Some of the Goldfinch look like they’re all fluffed up for warmth.

  4. This brings back so many memories for Dog Dad. We don’t remember seeing a cardinal in Florida.

  6. SW Michigan didn’t get the snow you did (yay).

    The birds are quite entertaining.

A friend gave us a remote camera we’re using in one of our bluebird houses that will enable us to watch bluebird families from nest building to hatching. We have it set up on a small TV monitor.

    • Well, since you usually DO get more snow than us I’ll cut you some slack this time. The bluebird monitor should be wonderful! Do you know for sure you’ve got a family in that box?

      • Not yet, but we had one last year. We cleaned it up before we installed the camera. Our friend said bluebirds will sleep in the houses when the weather is colder, but we really haven’t seen any evidence of that. All the birds seem very active lately, so maybe soon we’ll have tenants. 😉

  7. Love your photos today, Dawn! And while these birdies are stunning against a backdrop of snow, I hope for your sake (and theirs) that spring arrives soon.

  10. Nice bird pics! We don’t have cardinals this far north, either. I like your photography.
