Change Is Hard

…but change is certain.

Narrowing it down to ten

I’m almost at the end of my 365 day challenge of posting one image from each of my daily walks for an entire year.

It was a daunting challenge and one I didn’t exactly meet. I was supposed to walk every day, and that didn’t always happen. And apparently I’ve lost about 2 weeks along the way. My Facebook memories said I was posting day 1 a year ago, and here I have 11 more days to go until I get to day 365.

Still it was fun, and I definitely did more walking than I might have without the challenge. Even if some of it was after dinner in a last ditch effort to get a walk in and find something interesting to shoot before the light slipped away.

I copied each photo from my Facebook post to an image file, and periodically I’ve set that up as a slideshow and looked at all of them again. It takes more than half an hour to move through them all now.

The collection provides a wonderful reference to my year, reminding me of all the wonderful places I’ve been, all the great sights I’ve seen.

OK, some of the images aren’t that good, but there are many I’m proud of. And I wonder if I could choose the ten best images of this past 365 days.

I clicked through the file tonight, writing down the numbers of any shot that made me smile, that made me go back for a second look, the shots that are becoming my favorites.

So far I have thirty-one of them. And I have eleven days to go.

I don’t know if I can narrow it down to just ten. And would they be my favorites because the image was good, or because it reminded me of a favorite place or time?

The images in this post might or might not be on my favorites list. I’ll try to get it down to ten after the project is a wrap.

But I don’t know that I can.

I'm a long time banker having worked in banks since the age of 17. I took a break when I turned 50 and went back to school. I graduated right when the economy took a turn for the worst and after a year of library work found myself unemployed. I was lucky that my previous bank employer wanted me back. So here I am again, a long time banker. Change is hard.

    • I agree. It was early on when I realized how cool it would be to have this sort of record of my year. I’m glad I kept up with it from the beginning. I’ve really enjoyed looking back at all of them. Working on what to do for my last day, seems like it should be something special. I’ll see what I can come up with.

  2. This sounds like a nice challenge. I like that you are reviewing it for a top 10 as well, that sounds like a neat idea.

  3. My favorite in this group is the shivering birdie in the snowy tree. Definitely not my favorite time of year — especially *this* year!! — but what a beautiful shot!

  4. I wish I could say that I had walked every day. I do have the best intentions, however! Your photos are lovely — just natural captures of what you see. It will be difficult to narrow them down to 10 best!

  5. Maybe you could narrow it down to 12, and do a single photo calendar?

  6. Could’ve fooled me that you missed days. And the photos have all been delightful. Well done [almost].

  7. I didn’t think you had missed any days. You took a lot of great photos. Congratulations and well done! I love that you saved all the images in one file. I never would have thought of that. I will borrow that idea when I decide to give the 365 photo-walk challenge another go (it won’t be anytime soon — maybe in the fall — but it’s something I would like to finish the next time around).

    • In the end, based on FB, I was about 16 days overdue with the 365th picture. So, no pressure really. And I do love to go back and look at all of them in a slide show…near the beginning I was just taking pictures to get it done, but about half way through I was trying to find something unique that I hadn’t done before, and also trying to do a better job of the actual image. Most of the time anyway. There were still plenty of days when I just went out to find SOMETHING to photograph and post! Thank you so much for the inspiration…I don’t know if I’ll do 365 days again, but it IS a really good record of the year’s events. I actually turned it more into a ‘picture that represents the day’ more than what was on a walk, though most of them WERE on a walk of some kind.
