April 15th of this year we had snow. It seemed way too late to be getting so much of the wet white stuff. Sure it was pretty. But really, winter around here is long enough without it lingering on.
So our warm season seemed even shorter this week when on October 31st we got the first snow of the season. Yes, Halloween night, when kids from around the neighborhood should be enjoying a house-to-house foraging for candy, we were enduring wind, sleet and snow.
Needless to say no one came to our front door.
But in the morning we enjoyed the beauty the night’s storm left behind. We still have quite a bit of color here, leaves had only just turned when they were coated with snow.
It made a pretty juxtaposition, the warm colors of fall against the stark coldness of winter.
Katie and I went out to explore the backyard. Lots and lots of pretty things there.
She wasn’t even jealous that I wasn’t paying attention to her, she was having such a good time following smells.
It was pretty cold, the snow stayed around for most of the day, but by the next day it was gone. We’ll enjoy a few more days of sun before winter comes back for a longer visit.
Katie says we should get out there and enjoy every one of the good days. Cause she knows how it is when the snow is higher than she is tall.
And it’s not fun.

These photos are wonderful. I’m glad to be warm in Arizona but my heart is still in the northwest where they have been having a spectacular fall. And I love those first snowfalls.

Weird weather, Dawn. Halloween saw the temps drop from70’s in the morning to low 40’s at night. A/C one day, heat the next.

It was a fast drop in temps. I’m hoping for a few more days of sun and maybe 50s.

Me either. If we only got this much, once in awhile, it would be fine. But we know there’s so much more coming.

Katie’s advice is very wise. She also looks gorgeous in the snow-covered leaves!

She does. Though you might have noticed she looks gorgeous just about anywhere. Such a princess, she won’t approve the release of any photo that doesn’t show her good side.

Category 1 hurricane winds hit our son’s place on the north shore of Lake Ontario. His front sidewalk was flooded. Shingles were piling up on the ground. And YET he had a dozen or more trick or treaters!!
We woke to snow on Friday. A foot.
Winter was too late leaving and too early arriving, this year.
Love the picture of Katie among the coloured leaves.

I saw on the news that it was very windy over there. I hope his home is OK! We don’t get many trick or treaters here even on a nice evening. No sidewalks, no streetlights, too far between houses to be an efficient candy collection route. I’m glad we didn’t have that much snow!

We had a dusting of snow on Halloween, too. Nothing much stuck, thank goodness, and now we’ll have a little more Fall so the leaves can properly turn and drop. Ugh, winter’s far too long. Sigh.

Winter is definitely far too long. But then again, Katie and I had a fun walk in her park this afternoon and she enjoyed the cooler weather, didn’t even ask for a drink once! And she ran and pranced like a youngster which was fun to see.

I love getting glimpses of the youngsters they once were — sadly, not often enough nowadays.

To me there’s something charming about seeing the first snow on the colors of autumn. It’s such a dramatic reminder that things change, time to get with something new. Of course by April I’ve seen enough snow to last a lifetime, but these photos are wistful and beautiful to me.

I can understand that feeling. The first snow is always exciting and pretty, particularly now that I’m retired and I don’t necessarily have to drive in it. And this one was very light. But for me it’s just a warning of so much more snow to come…and it lasts sooooo long. (OK, I’m whining now.) I agree it was beautiful but I wish that was it for the season!

I agree, I feel like we just finally said goodbye to winter and here it is again. And the white against all the colors is photo-worthy – you’ve captured great shots and Katie looks happy too! Way to take advantage of the change in seasons!

Beautiful series of images. I love it when the first snow comes along at the same time there is still fall color. It doesn’t happen often (or at least, it didn’t happen often when I was living in Ohio).

No, not often do we get both. Was a spectacular fall, even with the early snow.
