Change Is Hard

Katie here. (Who else would come up with a title like that?)

As most of you are aware (but I was not), mama went camping up north at one of my favorite parks and in my all time favorite camp site. WITHOUT ME!

This was mama’s camp, site 43 at Hartwick Pines.

I thought she was just taking a really long time at the grocery store or something. You know she’s getting older and sometimes she wanders around for ages doing not much of anything. And other times she gets lost (she calls it exploring), so I wasn’t all that concerned that only daddy was feeding me and stuff. Cause mama is always around somewhere.

This was up at Pigion River Forest, where she was scouting out places to do photography.

Heck, lately I’m used to falling asleep right next to her and waking up to find she’s moved to another room! It’s hard to keep track of her, so sometimes I just don’t try.

She had beautiful weather, except for Monday night when it poured for hours.

But this time she was gone for 28 dog days! (That’s four days in human terms.) After awhile I got sort of sad, thinking I’d never see her again. I kinda like mama. But daddy is fun too, so like I said I wasn’t too worried.

There were lots of these pretty little blue flowers.

And then one afternoon I saw a shadow at the door and I knew daddy was right next to me on the sofa and I wondered, could it be, could it be mama came back to me??

One of the little lakes. Mama thought the stars would be pretty reflected here. But she didn’t go out there at night by herself.

And it was! And she smelled like smoke and marshmallows…and…and…she smelled like camping! CAMPING without ME?!?!?!

But it was pretty in the daylight.

I was all wiggle butt when she first came in and she picked me up and hugged me and then I realized the truth and I wanted down. I wanted down and I wanted to bark at her so I did.

A lot.

This trail is too long for me, so mama took advantage of not having me to hike it. Isn’t it beautiful?

Mama started unpacking the car and it became obvious that she had a great time and that great time had not included me so I barked at her some more. She got sort of annoyed, but not too much because she knew she was guilty.

Yep, my mama is always looking for light on things, even deep in the woods.

She said she didn’t pet any other dogs (as if that lets her off the hook) and she missed me a lot. She even said she got all teary eyed one evening remembering all the fun we have had camping in that very spot!

I don’t think mama was missing me while she was eating this!

She said the whole trip was sort of shadowed by the fact I wasn’t there, and she said the only reason I wasn’t was because it was so hot and she didn’t have an air condioned tent. She said I would have been miserable.

It’s a big park, up there, and I love to explore. Mama does too.

Sure mama.

Well. Maybe she’s right. Maybe she was only thinking of me.

I hope mama is reflecting on the error of her ways.

Let’s take a vote, people! Let’s hear from you! Do you think mama should not go on any more camping trips unless I get to go? Or do you think it was OK that she left me with daddy in my airconditioned house with my doggie beds and my special frozen banana treats?

Of course mama stopped to get a picture of a barn on the way home. More delays while I waited at home for her.

I’ll tabulate the results and present them to mama. (I’m pretty sure I’m going to get a camping trip out of this.) I’ll try not to make her feel bad, but that won’t be easy. She says she already feels really guilty.

She thought this was beautiful too. I say, no sheltie? Not pretty. Yep that’s what I say.

I think that’s fair. Don’t you?

Get those votes in everybody! This princess needs your support!

I think mama forgot, this is MY tent.

I'm a long time banker having worked in banks since the age of 17. I took a break when I turned 50 and went back to school. I graduated right when the economy took a turn for the worst and after a year of library work found myself unemployed. I was lucky that my previous bank employer wanted me back. So here I am again, a long time banker. Change is hard.

  1. Oh, Katie…you do make a very good argument for camping BUT I think Mama was really worried that you would be overcome by the heat. Princesses do get overcome by things, you know. Staying home with dad and A/C and frozen banana treats…! Heck, that sounds better than camping to me. Now I feel kinda sorry that your Mama even went in all that heat and rain….

  3. I don’t know, Katie, you sound convincing, but your momma wouldn’t have been able to get all of those beautiful photos… I mean, it was too hot, yes, that is what I meant. Air conditioning and your special frozen banana treats – no, you needed to stay home where you were safe from puppy heat stroke (On a serious note, I have seen a dog get heat stroke, so it happens…)

  4. You know, Katie, I think I’d stick with the air conditioning and special treats and Dad time. Hot is no fun.

  6. Gee Katie, that’s a tough choice. Camping in hot weather with Mom or staying home with Dad where it’s cool and there are frozen banana treats? I do have an idea, though. What about camping in the fall with Mom when it’s not as hot? Good luck, Katie dear.

  7. Hi, Katie – With a convincing argument like this, you definitely get my vote.
I do hope that you get a camping trip out of this — especially on one of the slightly cooler weeks! 😀

  8. Katie the heat is no fun and it’s hard to get cool once you’re too hot! Love that last photo especially mommy!!

  9. 2 votes for Katie from our household – me and Jack, our Catahoula hound. Jack wanted to vote more than once but I told him that would not be right. Only humans get to do that.

  10. Marlee (a doxie Princess) and I vote with you, Ms. Katie—as soon as the weather cools off a bit. Marlee wants to tell you, though, she would choose to stay home and eat frozen banana treats—cause doxies love food more than ANYTHING!! 😀 2 votes for Ms. Katie over here!

  11. Katie, I vote for mama to keep you with daddy in your air conditioned house with your doggie beds and your special frozen banana treats. Absence makes the heart grow fonder for you both,. Now you can plan the next camping trip together in cooler weather.

  12. This is a tough one, Princess. As someone who recently lost her BFF Dallas, I can’t imagine going anywhere without a special Sheltie in tow; but as one who saw that BFF suffer through heat-filled days (when he couldn’t find the zipper to remove his heavy furry coat), I know this time you were better off home with your daddy. How about a compromise? How about you tel your mama that she can go camping ONLY when the weather gets cooler — then you can go along! And have her pack those frozen banana treats in a nice cooler!

  13. I say don’t fight with your Mama because she loves you and only is thinking of your safety and comfort levels. You can tell your Mama she takes real good photos. I’m sure she missed you, just think she brought back of lot of new smells for you to explore. 😀

  14. Oh I don’t know Karie… I think you had it pretty darn good at home with Daddy. And you needed to be safe.
Mom got to take lots of pretty photos. But we all know she missed you and Daddy!

  15. Katie, my vote is air conditioning and frozen bananas all day long. Besides, you can make mama promise a camping trip just as soon as it cools off. I’m sure she will take you on the next one. Besides, you had some quality time with daddy. Look at all the wonderful photos she took for you so you can see what to expect on your next special trip.

  16. I vote that you stay with Dad with the air conditioner and treats. I’m melting taking care of my horses right now, I can’t imagine camping in the heat but maybe it’s not bad there! It’s sooooo beautiful at that campsite!! ❤️

  17. First of all, I admire the fact you went camping all alone in the summertime with no AC. I could not do that. Poor Katy so mistreated and unloved maybe plan a fall trip for her.

  18. I think that Mama did you a favor by not taking you with her this time. In the future, should the weather prove to be more agreeable, you will be back in your rightful place inside the tent. When it’s cooler outside.

  19. Oh, Katie, you’re not going to like this comment, probably, but mama needs time all alone. Mamas always do. Their soul just needs to be solo at times. It has nothing to do with you. I hope you can understand…

  20. I agree with Kathy. Mommy’s Day Out, or Camp Out is necessary! For both of you.

    • I am right now putting the tent up in the back yard. I am counting on her not noticing the difference, being in her own yard or being at a campground. As long as she gets to sleep outside I think she is pretty happy. And it will get into the 50s tonight, so she’ll be in heaven. I’ll be wearing layers.

  21. Sorry, Katie. My vote is for the air conditioning too, although I know it is hard to be left behind. I just think Mum could have pretended to have been to the vet’s to make you feel better.

I love the harebells and the picture of the tree canopy above them. 🙂
