Change Is Hard

…but change is certain.

Vacuum cleaner blues

Katie didn’t bark at the vaccum cleaner this morning. If she was a young dog I’d be thrilled, certain that I’d desensitized her, trained her not to go balistic whenever I pulled it out of the closet.

But she’s barked at that vaccum every single time I’ve used it for the past fifteen years.

This morning she just looked at me with sad eyes and wandered off to nap.

My eyes are leaky.

I'm a long time banker having worked in banks since the age of 17. I took a break when I turned 50 and went back to school. I graduated right when the economy took a turn for the worst and after a year of library work found myself unemployed. I was lucky that my previous bank employer wanted me back. So here I am again, a long time banker. Change is hard.

  2. Those changes are so hard for humans. I don’t remember–is she pretty much deaf now? I wonder whether not hearing it makes it less tempting to leave a comfy nap?

    • Yes, she is almost completely deaf. She wasn’t napping when I got it out, she was hovering around my feet. I fully expected the usual attack, but she just looked at me and it and walked away. Broke my heart.

  6. So sad when they don’t have the energy to react like they used to. It is real hard when they get old and we love them so:(

  12. Aww, I feel for you, Dawn. She is still living a beautiful life and will surprise you every day. Glad she barked at the snow shovel. My 11-YO Aero’s eyes are cloudy and his hearing is weak. He was never one to bark at the vacuum, but he has his moments. I don’t like thinking about it. Hugs and happy holidays to you and Katie!

  15. It’s the hard-of-hearing thing, huh? Dallas got like that, too, and while initially, I was shattered, his vet assured me dogs don’t miss hearing that much … and seriously, it makes for a way calmer, happier pup. Now, if you miss somebody barking at the vacuum, I’ll ship Monkey up to you and let him show Katie how it’s done!!
