Change Is Hard

…but change is certain.

Katie here.

I’ve heard through the grapevine (OK, from mama) that some of you are wondering how I’m doing. I guess mama gets worried and writes stuff and then you guys get all worried too. Mama says it helps to share her worry, cause sometimes she gets overwhelmed by all the ‘what ifs.’

My backyard during the ‘storm of the century!’

Mama says sometimes she looks at me and wonders if I’m still happy, or if I’m hurting but not telling her. Or maybe she’s just too blind to see. But I have to ask you all….do I LOOK like there’s something wrong?

I love snow!

I thought not.

But of course you all know there is. I’m in stage 4 of kidney disease. I’m eating the special food and taking all my meds like a good girl, but you can’t change the fact that I’ve got an incurable disease.

I got my toes trimmed and the nice groomer gave me a scarf!

But let me remind you that I’m fifteen now, and that’s a good old age for any sheltie-girl, even a princess like me. Of course I’d love to live to be 17 or 18 like mama sees sometimes on Facebook, but honestly? Only if I still felt like a puppy, and I don’t think that’s possible.

Yes mother, I know I’m not supposed to be eating the birdseed under the feeder.

As it is I sleep a lot, and I have some trouble getting up and down because my hips are stiff. Mama and daddy have talked about this with the vet and I’ve got some meds for that, but the meds seem to make me unsteady and sometimes I can’t get up off the floor at all!

Sometimes after a good walk a girl needs to take a nap.

Mama says I look like a beached seal, flapping all my legs trying to get them under me. But she’s not laughing when she rushes to pick me up. Once I get my feet back under me I’m just fine and I usually ask her for some lunch. Or at least a snack.

They took me back off the meds and will discuss all of this at my vet appointment next week. Mama and Daddy are really hoping my numbers aren’t getting worse. I hope they’re getting better, but mama says that isn’t likely. Well. A girl can dream, right?

Mama says she’s really happy that I’m getting to experience all this snow.

Meanwhile I’m pretty happy most of the time, so don’t worry about me. Mama and daddy are taking real good care of me, and in return I’m being my normal annoying demanding self. I figure it’s my responsibility to uphold the princess job description.

Royalty always carries on, and I’m definitely the one most royal in my family. I’ll have my staff keep you up to date on my progress.

Heading back to the house, following my own footprints home.

And thank you all for the kind thoughts and notes that mama gets. They help a lot especially when she’s having a bad day. She should learn from me to take each day as it comes.

Can we go on another walk mama?

You’d think after fifteen years she’d know to follow my lead. Silly mama.

I'm a long time banker having worked in banks since the age of 17. I took a break when I turned 50 and went back to school. I graduated right when the economy took a turn for the worst and after a year of library work found myself unemployed. I was lucky that my previous bank employer wanted me back. So here I am again, a long time banker. Change is hard.

  1. We know how your mom feels –
AND we also know your mom and dad will do all they can for you –
    Please know that –
But please don’t forget to let them know when things aren’t fun any more – like in five or so more years –
Until then, NAK and NAL want your to keep enjoying the snow and the khold for them!

  2. Katie, Thank you for your update. You know you look beautiful, right? Of course you do. I’m glad you got to go out in the snow. I agree that your mama should learn from you to take each day as it comes. All we really have is the present. When we worry, it takes our mind away from enjoying the present. I hope you have a great weekend and good news from the vet next week.

  3. Katie–your mama does such a great job of keeping us informed about you. Of course, we all want to know how the princess is feeling! You do look beautiful in the snow, and I am glad you are enjoying it–even if it is the storm of the century. Fingers crossed for good numbers, Katie.

    • When this all started we were hoping for a few things. One that she made it to fall because she’s so beautiful in the fall leaves, two that she made it to her 15th birthday, and three that she got to play in the snow again. We’ve managed to meet all those goals, though she doesn’t play per se in the snow now, it’s too deep for her to wander through, so she waits for me. We got snow at Thanksgiving and she actually ran around the yard in it. I’ll always remember that.

  4. You are looking pretty good Katie, I know your Mom worries …that is because she loves you and we do too! You might talk to your Mom about a harness, it really helped Chance when he was unsteady and it was safer for him, I just could not bear the thought of him breaking a leg or falling down the stairs. 🙂

  6. Hi Katie, beautiful princess. I am glad that you have been able to enjoy the “storm of the century.” Word has it that the big snow was specially made for you! All those sparkly snowflakes on your royal head glitter like the finest gemstones in a crown. I like your Valentines scarf and your sweet smile in that picture. Of course we worry about you and your mama & daddy, too. We love you. Sending you a gentle kiss on the head, and lots of love and prayers. xo 💕

Sending you positive thoughts, prayers, love & **hugs** Dawn. Katie is blessed to have you and your husband as her parents/staff. I hope Katie’s numbers are unchanged next week. Please try to take good care of yourselves, too. **hugs**

  7. So glad you updated us, Katie. I’m been wondering how you’re doing. Bella, who is almost 15 and has kidney problems too, shares your sentiments about learning to take each day as it comes. We humans can be so silly when it comes to that. I’m glad we have companions like you and Bella to remind us. Hugs to you and your mama. Enjoy that snow! It’s almost as beautiful as you are. I wish I could come play in it with you. ♥

  10. It’s always important to make sure the family recognizes your royalty, Katie. Mama worries because she loves you – just like I worry about Shasta. Maybe mama wants to ask your vet about Rejensa – it’s what Shasta’s vet put her on to help with the old hips and joints that don’t want to work very well making getting up very hard, and it’s helped her. Your problem might not be the same, but I thought it might be worth asking about.

  12. Katie, you are gorgeous … especially after your grooming! And getting a Valentine’s scarf made it all worthwhile, huh? You’re fortunate to have your mama and daddy taking such good care of you. That’s because they love you. We all do, but we don’t know you as well as they do. Don’t worry about seeing the concern on their faces — it’s a parent’s job to hover a bit, especially when the fur-kid isn’t getting any younger. Best of luck with your test results!

  16. You’re a happy, beautiful girl, Katie, and so well-loved! If only I could get MY dogs to write blog posts for me! My grand-dog has kidney issues, too, at age 12 and he is also being well-taken care of, and living a very healthy life. Make sure you drink your water and do what your Mama tells you, OK, and I’m sure you are going to be around for a long time still. Love you, sweet girl!
