Change Is Hard

…but change is certain.

A glimmer of possibility

Wednesday afternoon the sun came out and temperatures rose into the 50s F (10s C). The snow began to melt, birds were singing, and spring felt within reach.

“Can we please go outside, mom?”

Little Penny, experiencing her first spring day, was ecstatic. And, because she wanted to be outside exploring her yard, she began to ask to go outside.

Our first picture together.

And just like that a corner has been rounded in our potty training effort.

Wednesday afternoon she began going to the back door and whining softly. Once, when I didn’t move fast enough to suit her, she pawed at the door.

Trying to engage the puppy in the reflection.

I’m pretty ecstatic too.

We’ve gone a whole day without a potty accident in the house. She’s napping at the moment, exhausted by all the tours of the yard, the grasses pulled, the gardens explored.

“Hey mom! This grass smells great!”

I’m grinning as I type, because I can tell she’s going to be an awesome dog.

Oh, I still miss my Katie-girl. I will always miss her, and Bonnie before her, and Daisy before Bonnie. As I walk around the yard, little Penny dancing on the end of her leash I talk to Katie.

She sits when she’s interested in something. We didn’t train her to do this. I spent years trying to get Katie to sit when a car drove by.

“See your little sister, baby-girl? See how she’s running and grinning and having the best time in your yard? Isn’t she cute? She’s got so many adventures in front of her, doesn’t she, sweetie. You keep watch over us, Katie-girl, and thanks for guiding us to this little one. She’s going to be special, just like you.”

I think this piece of grass needs to be pulled up, mom. Don’t worry, I’ll handle it.

Yep, this one’s a fire cracker, all bundled up energy, bursting into zoomies at the slightest instigation, never complaining, always happy, and definitely smart.

“Can we please go out again, mom?”

There’s going to be some stories to tell, no doubt about it. I can’t wait to get started. I think she’s pretty amped up too.

We had a really good day today, didn’t we mom!”

I'm a long time banker having worked in banks since the age of 17. I took a break when I turned 50 and went back to school. I graduated right when the economy took a turn for the worst and after a year of library work found myself unemployed. I was lucky that my previous bank employer wanted me back. So here I am again, a long time banker. Change is hard.

    • She’s a little bit of a snuggle bug, but not as big a snuggler as her breeder mom thought she’d be. She likes everyone so she’d let you hug her if you wanted to. She’d either kiss you back or bite your nose, could go either way. Sometimes both.

  7. I had a feeling that Penny would find delight in her backyard just like Katie. I love the last photo – the lighting looks like she had a halo surrounding her. Such a sweetie! Don’t forget to have someone take pictures of you and your husband with Penny! You need an updated family photo.

  8. oh my word, I’ve been telling myself I will not get another dog/pup. But this may have put me over the edge. You CAN love a dog (Katie, or my girl Alex) and then ALSO love another dog. Sigh. Ok, the door may be opening. I love photo #4 … I might show up on your doorstep and grab her! ha! 🙂

    • Well I have to say part of me was enjoying getting my dog fixes from other people’s dogs. Especially early mornings when I didn’t have to get up, and those blizzard days when I didn’t have to go outside. But….on the other hand, she is SOOOO fun it might all be worth it.

  11. Oh she is adorable. I missed that you got another dog and I am very happy that you did. Is she a rescue?
Congratulations on the new 4-legged family member.

    • No, not a rescue. We couldn’t get a rescue because our sub doesn’t allow fences and they all require a fenced back yard. She’s a puppy from a local breeder, I got her because she’s going to be too tall to be a show dog.

  17. I love that last photo of her — she looks like an angel! And I love how fast she’s settling in for you, too. You really got blessed when Katie sent this wee one to you! Boy, she’s going to LOVE warmer weather … and I can’t wait to read of her adventures. (This post brought tears to my eyes — Dallas crossed the Bridge three years ago today, and it’s been a tough anniversary).

    • Awwww, I know I’ll be really sad next June 7th, the one year anniversary for Katie. I looked at her “last day” photos for the first time today…cried a little even with Penny here. I miss my girl so much and always will. Dallas and Katie sure were wonderful.

      • Aw, I know. It’s still really hard, despite Monkey and his antics. Dallas and Katie were definitely special. Bet they’re having a blast over the Bridge though.
