Change Is Hard

…but change is certain.

101 in 1001 days

More than a year ago Melanie posted about putting together a list of 101 things she wanted to accomplish, enjoy, experience or learn in the next 1001 days.  I think there was a website that helped her set up her list but I don’t remember.  A while ago she updated us on her progress…which reminded me that the whole thing was something I was interested in doing.

Sort of my own bucket list.

So I started building my own list of 101 things I wanted to do.  But I got stuck.  So far I have only listed 52 things.  And I’ve been working on this off and on since the first of August.  I’m thinking that because I’m already over 50 and have experienced many amazing things that I just might not have 101 things left to do.  I’m not sure if that is a good or a bad thing.

Maybe I should take the leap and just do it.  Just because I can’t find 101 things there’s no reason I have to wait to start this.  Who made the rules anyway?  Who says you can’t add to the list even as you’re checking things off?  Or is it cheating if I only have 52 things to accomplish in 1001 days?  Should I get the 52 things done in 500 days?

And how do you figure out the date 1001 days away anyway?

I'm a long time banker having worked in banks since the age of 17. I took a break when I turned 50 and went back to school. I graduated right when the economy took a turn for the worst and after a year of library work found myself unemployed. I was lucky that my previous bank employer wanted me back. So here I am again, a long time banker. Change is hard.

  2. Was number one on your list…..jump in water with your clothes on?

According to my mathematical skills, you should give yourself 502 days.

  3. LOL you guys!

HUGE mathematical skill Sara!!! That’s why you teach math and I don’t! LOL

Really, the internet is a wonderful thing. 1001 days from today is May 21, 2013.

502 days is Jan 8th 2012. I don’t know. That seems too soon!

  4. Where did you find something on the web to get the date a certain number of days out?

I figured you could do it in Excel if you have Excel; for example, this is how to get the number of days (D) from august 1 of this year to august 1 of 2012, so then you’d have to narrow in on 502 days.

    =DATEDIF(DATE(2010,8,1),DATE(2012,8,1),”D”)

I think you can add or remove things to your list at any time, and you don’t have to start with 100–sometimes I find that things that I do end up adding things to the list more than removing them!

  5. I use this site to calculate days: http://www.timeanddate.com/date/dateadd.html

And yes, you should get started anyway, and add more as you come up with them. They don’t all have to be fantastical – some of them can just be “to-do list” type items that you’ve been putting off, or things that will make your life easier or healthier in a million different ways. And google for other people’s lists and crib from them – I know I did, sometimes not precisely, but sometimes yes!

Also, I think you should share your list, but I understand if you don’t want to.. And thanks for the link love!

which turns out to be the same one Melanie used! 🙂

  7. Well, I”m pretty much amazed but I think I figured out how to add another “tab” at the top of the blog, and have put my 101 things list (with way less than 101 things on it at the moment) up there!

I think I deserve a treat. Perhaps ice cream.

  8. Awesome! I think you should start working on the 52 and add things as you go!

I started reading Ellen’s comment about excel and my eyes glazed over – LOL! Glad you figured out the math – I would be no help at all! 🙂

  10. Excellent! Excellent! Excellent! I am so excited that you are enthused about doing this. I think we all need to listen deeper to ourselves and to go out on limbs and jump in lakes and reach for the stars at midnight. I’m not sure about making a list, though. How ’bout we all just wake up knowing that there are going to be at least one or two or three of these things for us to do each day and we simply have to be alert to what they might be? I suspect we’re all being given these opportunities every single day anyway…we might as well keep our eyes peeled for them. (Tonight I insisted my husband stop by the lake on the way home from Houghton just “because”. Because of the reasons you listed here.)

  11. Your list is incredible! All I did is read it and I’m tired. I think maybe I need to start challenging myself in some way. Or maybe not. I’ll give it some thought.

Instead of arranging printed photos in a book, why not scan the photos (printed photos will deteriorate over time) – you can put together a photo book and have it printed at a number of online sites, but I’ve used Blurb.com and been extremely satisfied with the results. I can have my albums printed more cheaply than I can do it. And I can put the photos on CDs so I’ll always have copies, just in case. But then I’m a digital scrapbooker so it works for me.

  12. Yep, my vote is to start now, don’t wait to get the 101. You’ll think of more things as you go, I’m sure. 🙂
