Change Is Hard

Bookended Beige

I sit in a beige cubicle all day.  Beige padded walls, beige desk, dirty white tiled ceiling marked by a huge water stain from a leak prior to my time.  Florescent light just off center, shared by me and the person in the beige cubicle next door.   We work in a paperless world now;  no piles of work break up the emptiness.  No in basket, no out basket.  Just that beige expanse and the computer in the corner with it’s never ending flicker.  As jail cells go it’s not so bad.  Still.

This week the weather has provided some amazing sunsets on my drive home from work.  And often as I’ve driven into work I’ve headed directly into a golden peach sunrise, sometimes studded with clouds lit up in brilliant purples.  So much color and unbelievable beauty make those crazy commutes less stressful.

It occurred to me last night while driving into a beautiful violet and pink sunset that perhaps God was book-ending my dreary beige days to give me something to smile about.

It’s working.

I'm a long time banker having worked in banks since the age of 17. I took a break when I turned 50 and went back to school. I graduated right when the economy took a turn for the worst and after a year of library work found myself unemployed. I was lucky that my previous bank employer wanted me back. So here I am again, a long time banker. Change is hard.

  2. I love the blues and greys and fluffy clouds in the one picture. Glad there is great color and richness at the end of the day-you have a good way of looking at it-that has to make the beige feel a little more tolerable!

  3. I was fortunate enough to almost always have windows when I worked. I suffered mightily if I could not see outside. God loves you by giving you color when you can see outside!

I cannot imagine being truly paperless. I try, but I still have a need for a paper ” backup”.

  6. Dawn, I’ve been enjoying various posts on your blog today, though I didn’t comment on all of them. Your work space is REALLY paperless? Astounding! The clouds, the skies–I spend my days in my own bookstore, hardly a beige cubicle, but I still love seeing the sky morning and evening, and I love the idea of bookends of sky.

  8. Those are beautiful sky pictures, Dawn.

There are good and bad days in our life and it all depends on how we want to react to them. We’re happy because it’s a good day but feel sad when the day isn’t perfect. I love your way of being positive, those cloudy days then become beautiful days again!!!

  10. Twas a beautiful book-end, indeed. I wonder–just thinking about this in my own life–how God can be found in the beige jail cells.

  11. Now how did that song go. “I really don’t know clouds at all.”

Hope all is going well. You sure had some wicked weather there about a week ago.
