Change Is Hard

…but change is certain.

Seeing the light

Katie has been in rare form the last couple of weeks.  She’s up early, wanting to go out, wanting something to eat, wanting to play, wanting, wanting, wanting.  Sometimes I go to work early just to get away from her and her needs.

One early morning this week we had already been out in the cold and dark multiple times and as far as I was concerned she was finished with everything she needed to do out there.  I wasn’t planning on taking her out again before I left for work.

But once she starts whining she doesn’t stop.  Ever.  No amount of my admonishing works.  She might go lay down for a minute or two.  Ten minutes tops.  But like the Terminator …she’ll be back.

So I bundled up again and we headed out to wander around looking for the perfect spot for whatever it was that she deemed so important.

And look what I saw.

It might look like the tops of the trees still have their yellow leaves, but they don’t.  The glow at the top is the sun rising and just catching the tips of the trees.  We ran back to the house for the camera.

The sun continued to rise and the glow continued to grow.  It was astounding, and Katie and I ventured further into the back yard to enjoy it.  Quickly the entire trees were engulfed in brilliant warm morning light.

And I would have missed it all if I hadn’t had my girl telling me it was time to go back out into the cold on that early morning.

She even posed for me.

That’s my girl.

I'm a long time banker having worked in banks since the age of 17. I took a break when I turned 50 and went back to school. I graduated right when the economy took a turn for the worst and after a year of library work found myself unemployed. I was lucky that my previous bank employer wanted me back. So here I am again, a long time banker. Change is hard.

  1. Katie, tell your mom, “I only whine for good reason….really.”

    Beautiful photos. Beautiful dog.

  3. I love the way the sun plays off things. Im glad you were able to catch it. In the mornings Miley wont settle down until I take them for their walk. Ugh! Its my own fault, its what I always do . So she expects it. Diana

  4. Yea, it’s probably my fault too. She gets me up before 6, we go outside and she pees, then I take a shower then we go outside and she does #2, then I eat some breakfast and then we go outside for another pee. I swear…it’s hard to get ready for work some days!

  5. Bailey gets on those “I demand” kicks too, but she doesn’t whine, she barks. I’m not sure when this started, but she does it when she wants me out of bed, when she wants to go out, when she wants her treat, when she wants dinner, when she wants . . . . I’m learning that telling her to stop only makes it worse. If she’s going to stop, it’ll be be because we ignore her, and then only if she’s not feeling it’s urgent yet.

In this case, Katie was so right – it was an opportunity that shouldn’t have been missed. Lovely photos resulted from her demand.

  6. We would miss so much without our dogs needing–or just wanting!–to go outdoors. The light was gorgeous here in Leelanau all day today, too. Fabulous!

  7. What a great thing to go outside and find. 🙂 Amazing how seeing something like that can change our whole mood, isn’t it?

  8. Lovely pictures, Dawn! Good for Katie insisting that you go out with her. Just tell her that the next time she’s so insistent there had better be an equally important reason. 🙂
Earlier in October I would see the reverse effect as I was driving home from work each day. The upper branches would shine golden, but the effect became smaller the longer it took to get home. It was wonderful to glance at along the way home.

I have to push Ludo out the door some mornings, he would rather stay in bed for longer!
