Change Is Hard

…but change is certain.

Something old, something new

It’s the end of an era.  Last week we traded in my SUV.  The poor SUV had a lot of miles on her.  And the repair bills were mounting exponentially.

Still, this was the car I loved to drive, the car Katie and I used to explore parks and country lanes.  The car that took me home to the South and north to the peace of the forest and lakes.

Katie and I took it for a last run to the park. We had already taken her crate out of the back so she got to sit up front with me.

Hey!  Wait a minute Mom, aren’t I supposed to be back there?

She gets so excited when I pack up her stuff for a trip to the park, she runs to the back of the car and stands on her hind legs waiting to be lifted in.

I’m going to have to break her of that habit; it’s best that there be no nail scratches on the new car!  At least not right away.

This is so wrong! Where is my crate??

We had a good time at the park…

…we always do.  Then we took our last ride home.

Hey Mom!  You’re not getting rid of my car are you?  How are we going to go to the park without my car?

Don’t worry little girl….stay tuned!

I'm a long time banker having worked in banks since the age of 17. I took a break when I turned 50 and went back to school. I graduated right when the economy took a turn for the worst and after a year of library work found myself unemployed. I was lucky that my previous bank employer wanted me back. So here I am again, a long time banker. Change is hard.

  1. Who says change is good? We don’t like change and sympathize with Katie! My dad had to give up his ailing and old SUV this summer and while it was hard for him to let it go he ended up with a new (used) car that he LOVES! Hope it works out as well for you guys!

  2. There is comfort in the familiar, but excitement in the new. Katie will learn to love the new – anything that takes her to the park with her mom is bound to be good!
Congrats on the new vehicle; sympathies on the new payments (or cash expended).

  4. Any idea what you’re trading the old vehicle for? Can’t wait to see what Katie’s new “taxi” will be.

  5. Dawn, I see what you mean about Katie needing to be lifted into your car, as I have to do with Trudy. I hope she gets to go to as many fun places with her Mom in the new car as she has in the old one. I’d love to see Trudy so excited about going places!

  7. I still get all sad when I see someone driving “my” old car. I had such a hard time letting it go. Pathetic.

Your new one will be full of dog hair in no time!

  8. Don’t worry Katie, you’ll soon get used to it. Funnily, Ludo can manage to jump into my car when we are heading out. But has to be lifted on on the way home.

Ludo says he does really like Auntie Penny, he just hates her getting to do stuff without him.

  9. A friend with a pickup truck and an old dog had a lightweight doggie ladder, more like a step stool, for the dog so she didn’t have to do the heavy lifting. Not that Katie looks heavy–.

Whenever David and I look at vehicles, my suitability criterion #1 always has to do with dog transport. Looking forward to seeing your replacement carriage.

  10. We got a new SUV early this year for our four fab doggies. Hana didn’t have a chance to have a ride at all, Laura had some fun rides, Mika has a fair share and Eva thinks it’s HERS!!!

Katie and you will love your new car! Can’t wait to hear about the new car and rides!!!

  13. I like to think I’m not sentimental about “stuff,” but I was bummed to see my first car (minivan hand-me-down) go. I remember all the trips to Yosemite, the Utah Desert…

hope the new car brings many more trips to the park!

  14. Well Dawn and Katie, we can’t wait to see the new ride. Our mom is still pondering with her decision on what car to get for us…maybe yours will inspire her to act! LOL

Just saying Hello after our Thanksgiving travels, hope you had a great feast.
