Scott, over at his blog Views Infinitum, has challenged photographers to do a food photo shoot; to photograph food in a manner that makes your stomach growl with longing, your mouth water, your nose twitch in the hope of catching the scent.
I’ve taken pictures of food. Usually when I’m somewhere eating something outside my comfort zone. Like when I was in New York City eating Indian food at a neighborhood buffet. I had no idea what anything was, but it all looked interesting.
Or the time I was eating at the American Indian museum in Washington DC. I picked out several items, each from a different Indian tribe or region. It didn’t necessarily go together, didn’t really make a meal, but it was all good!
Then again sometimes I take a picture of food as part of a story, eating a meal prepared by my brother…
…or breakfast at a diner with a friend.
But none of these photos look like a photo shoot that belongs in a food magazine. So this is going to be a challenge. Guess that’s why he calls it a “photo challenge” huh?
Anyone have any suggestions?

I did a search on “photographing food” and found all kinds of nifty links on techniques WITH photos of food–one way several experts have suggested when trying to get the hang of any type of photography is to try to reproduce what they did. So find a photo that you could reproduce terms of the content (food) and see how close you can come. 🙂 Good luck!

What a cool challenge. All the ideas popping into my head are juvenile (spell a word with spaghetti, make a face out of food….), must be due to one too many years as a camp counselor.

Sounds like fun. I would take more over head shots, close up and food that have lots of color. Try not to get the utensils or the table. Focus on the food. If something is distracting from the item you want to focus on ,remove it. I’m no expert these are just my ideas. Have food fun.

This is interesting. I have never taken any food pictures before but I love seeing them especially those in the recipe books. The pictures are always the keys which make me want to cook that particular dish or bake that cake or anything else.
I guess this is a very cool challenge too!

I think it would be difficult to take photos of food that make the food look as good as it tastes! Good luck!

Thanks everyone! Thanks Ellen, for the website…I’ll go check out some strategy…thanks Linda for volunteering! I’m hoping to photograph something I don’t actually have to spend hours making or baking first…we’ll see. It’s a brain teaser for sure..

I’ve taken a few – some in Korea and China, a couple on other trips. Nothing worthy of praise, but fun, just as yours are fun. A couple of them do make my mouth water!

Ooooo – I didn’t mean to make it sound like your pictures aren’t worthy of praise! Not at all. That’s not what I meant.
