Change Is Hard

…but change is certain.

Still trying

One morning last week I gave in to my itchy shutter finger and went out to Kensington to try to photograph birds who aren’t the regular suspects.

A flicker hides from me.

I’ve been watching, on a Facebook group, nature photographers capturing some stunning images of birds from my favorite park. I asked one of the photographers if he was finding these birds on the nature trails there.

I stalked this yellow ‘bird’ until I realized it wasn’t one.

He said he was wandering around other areas of the park, and that made sense to me. Sure the titmice and chickadees and nuthatches were hanging around looking for a treat, making them easier to photograph. But what about other birds, those that aren’t into landing on hands or snacking on oilers?

While I was waiting for a bird to show up I noticed this pretty pink flower.

So I went out to the park and stopped at a picnic area quite a ways from the nature center. It had a picnic pavilion and a swing set and quite a large open area, surrounded by large, mature woods. I was the only person there. I used my Merlin app to find out what birds were near.

A very fluffy robin was preening.

The place was overrun with robins. But there was also a flicker singing right at the tree line. I followed him for quite awhile…but didn’t have the right settings when he flew up from a branch.

He was in decent light, but I needed to up the shutter speed.

Still, I sort of like the image. It would have been stunning if the wings were sharp.

I adjusted my settings.

I found a bluebird who agreed to sit still for me, though he was a long way away and cropping the image shows the noise. Still, he’s cute, and everyone loves a bluebird.

Hey lady! Get your shot quick, I’ve got to go pick up lunch for the Mrs.

Mostly I chased the flicker around, and never got a better shot of him. Eventually I gave up and drove over to the nature trails where I found myself walking behind this couple.

Just going for a walk.

They were in no hurry, so neither was I.

But then there arose a loud screeching of another crane pair coming in for a landing.

What’s that noise over there?

The original cranes were less than happy and much squawking and wing flapping ensured. The woman at the other end of the trail and I stood still, not wanting to get involved.

I was busy backing away so I missed the most exciting parts of the greeting between the two couples.

Eventually I backed up and headed down another trail where I found beautiful things to photograph that don’t move around so much.

The last of the spring irises.

It’s so much easier to photograph plants.

Joe Pye is just beginning to bloom.

And they make me smile too.

I don’t know what this is, but it sure was pretty!

So I wonder….did I ever find any more birds to photograph? Was I successful at getting any good shots?

This little guy wants to know!

I guess you’ll have to wait and see.

I'm a long time banker having worked in banks since the age of 17. I took a break when I turned 50 and went back to school. I graduated right when the economy took a turn for the worst and after a year of library work found myself unemployed. I was lucky that my previous bank employer wanted me back. So here I am again, a long time banker. Change is hard.

  1. I’m off topic, but wanted to let you know the bridge connecting civic center to the rest of the preserve is now open. I entered from the civic center side over the railroad tracks. The stay out signs are replaced with “look both ways” signs ( at RR). The newly mown areas are as pristine as you will ever see. Noticibly free of invasives. Get there before the swallow wort arrives. Penny will enjoy the short exploration. I finally got a close look at the monument to the donor of the property. I’ve been looking at it from afar for years .

  2. Way to follow your itchy shutter finger. I think you got some great shots. The Cranes are adorable. We have a family of three in our field that I’ve been trying to get good photos of. Nothing like the shots you got. They are fun to watch though.
I’m with you that sometimes the flowers are the better objects when the birds and critters are less than pose-worthy. I bet you often think as I do, there’s a lot of fun in trying to catch a great shot. Practicing is very important in photography!

    • Well these cranes are at Kensington where they are used to having people near them. The ones here at home wouldn’t let me get nearly as close, especially if they had a colt. I’m still trying to get the clear, crisp shots I see on Facebook, I think I need a bigger lens because mine, when it’s fully zoomed out is fuzzy. I swear it’s the camera not me. LOL

      • Ah, that explains how you could get so close. We have a couple with a colt in our soybean field and my photos of them with my larger lens aren’t clear or fun like the ones I’ve seen on Facebook. I definitely need a bigger lens if I’m going to get better shots. So yeah, if you’re not getting the shots you want, it’s definitely the camera. 😉😂

  3. You have some great shots, if not the intended ones! How frustrating though. I’m a recent adopter of the Merlin app. It’s wonderful, isn’t it?

  4. You sound like me out by the pond at feeding time. I just want them to move a little slower or lift their wings just right, or catch one with a worm dangling. I don’t ask for much. You are right, flowers are much easier, but then again, you could be chasing butterflies.

  5. I find it’s easier to photograph things that don’t move around a lot, too! Your plants are lovely (sorry I don’t know what that purple flower is, but I love its color). And you’re right: we ALL love bluebirds!

    • I can never miss with a bluebird image. Even a fuzzy one. I am lucky that they are around my yard quite a bit and sometimes I can get a good shot. But I hardly ever get good shots out in the woods, so I was pleased with this one.

  6. Those stupid yellow “birds” .. they distract you, they lure you, they confuse you, they are not nice birds! 🙂 I loved all the bird photos, and the flower photos. Life is super.

    • I know, right? And yes, life is super! I was out weeding my perennial bed (should have been doing that for at least a month) this morning and thinking how much nicer it was to be out in the yard listening to the birds and even weeding than it was in the days I had to be at work all day. I feel very lucky.

  7. I think you had quite a successful outing whether or not you found what you were looking for. The cranes walking down the path makes me giggle. It’s like the paths were made for them. The bluebird is so sweet.

Kensington is my favorite place for you to visit!

    • Kensington is my favorite place to go too. At least around here. Now….if I were traveling in the Southwest…there would be other favorite places. And we loved upstate NY when we were there years ago…and I’d love to see the Pacific Northwest…and and and. But while I’m here, Kensington is a favorite quick drive away place to go for photography.
