Change Is Hard

…but change is certain.

Does she think this is an adventure?

Hey everybody! It’s me, your friend Penny!

Guess what? Mom is sneaky. I don’t think any of you should trust her. Cause you could be taking a nap and minding your own business when suddenly she’ll put your harness on and you’ll find yourself in the car! With no explanation!

“Where are we going, mom?”

And suddenly you’re at a place you’ve never seen before and it smells like other dogs and you’re kind of confused…and a really big horse of a dog (mom said it was a Great Dane) comes in behind you and you ask your mom to pick you up.

And of course she does.

And then you might find yourself in a kennel! In a noisy ‘room’ of your own and you don’t know what’s happening…and a nice girl comes and takes you outside to the yard which seemed nice, but most of the time you’re in your room watching dogs go back and forth.

Mom was in a hurry so this picture is blurry. But you get the idea.

And you begin to wonder if you’ll ever see mom again. And you kinda wonder if you even want to given she left you here in the first place.

And then, the most wonderful thing happens! The nice girl takes you on a walk and through a couple doors and there is your mom!

And you jump up and down a whole bunch and mom kisses you on the nose and asks if you want to go home. What a silly question, of course you want to go home!

This is me on the front porch of the place mom left me.

And you’ll bark at her almost all the way home. Cause you have a lot to say. Yes you do.

So tell me, people, does this sound like an adventure to you?

I'm a long time banker having worked in banks since the age of 17. I took a break when I turned 50 and went back to school. I graduated right when the economy took a turn for the worst and after a year of library work found myself unemployed. I was lucky that my previous bank employer wanted me back. So here I am again, a long time banker. Change is hard.

  1. Uh oh. Did mom leave you alone there for a while, Penny? Hmm-mm. This might be an interesting adventure. Report back!

    • I was there for 59 years, Ms. Lois! I swear! Of course that’s the dog math equivalent of 6 hours. Mom said I had to be “evaluated” before this kennel would put me on the approved list. Mom says I passed.

    • Oh yes, mom was very interested in what I had to say. And when we got home after my 6 hour adventure I crashed for the rest of the night. It’s hard to stay alert for 6 hours when you’re in crazyland!

    • Well it was hard, Ms. Linda! I was there for a gazillion hundred million days, or 6 hours, give or take. I got evaluated to see if I can be kenneled there in the future. Mom says I passed. I said of course I did.

  6. Penny, it does sound like an adventure, and I sure don’t blame you for barking at Mom all the way home.

    • Well, Ms. Laurie, I had a thing or two to say to mom. But then when we got home I crashed for the rest of the night. It’s exhausting being on guard for 6 hours and then having to explain it all to mom. I’m sitting on her foot right now so she doesn’t leave me again.

  7. How long did Penny stay in the kennel? Sounds like she did well, for being in a kennel. How did the kennel measure up for mom? I remember the first time Ivy went to the kennel, she came back changed, a lot calmer! Fern on the other hand..

    • I stayed there for a hundred million hours, Mr. Clay! Or, in mom-time, 6 hours, just to be evaluated by the kennel staff. Mom said I had to do that so that if she needs a place to put me I’ll be all set. Right. I think she should take me EVERYWHERE all the TIME! Mom says it’s a real nice kennel and the young ladies working there all loved me and stuff. Well, I AM cute, how could they not! ANYWAY. I guess this is where I’ll be if mom and dad decide to have some time to themselves someday. It’s not so bad, but my favorite spot is still with my breeder Mama S. and my doggie mom Vivian.

  8. Ah dear Penny! Adventures like these are sometimes necessary. Moms are never happy to have to make our babies have these adventures, however, it gives us peace of mind to know they are well cared for at times when we can’t do it ourselves.

    • I suppose so, Ms. Karma, and it wasn’t bad you know? But I don’t want mom to know that cause I want her to feel guilty that she left me for 6 whole hours yesterday! I’m sitting on her foot right now so she can’t go anywhere without me knowing!

  9. oh Penny! That looks like it is probably a lovely place!! But……Mom shouldn’t have tricked you! How long did they let you play outside? You shouldn’t be cooped up in your room! I don’t blame you telling Mom off on the way home! Love, Levi

    • Mama said they told her they only took me out once. I guess they had so many doggies to get outside. I did get to watch doggies go back and forth and that was interesting. My room has a big gate on the front that I can see out of, so lots to keep me interested. I didn’t nap even one second!

  10. Miss Penny, something tells me that if you had to be evaluated for 6 hours (or a million-and-a-half years!), that’s probably a quality kennel (even if you don’t really want to be separated from your parents). I mean, if they’re that particular about which dogs they agree to watch over, they probably want to be sure the dogs get along with them (and vice-versa). Anyway, it’s not like your mom is going to willingly leave you behind all the time, right? And it looks like a nice front porch. And I expect your mom kept you in suspense for two reasons: 1) she didn’t want you to fret and worry over what was happening, and 2) she didn’t really know if she could leave you without her eyes going all leaky and stuff.

    • Well, you’re probably right, Ms Debbie. She knows how I can worry about stuff. And she did look like she might have leaky eyes when she came back to get me. I guess she had second thoughts, huh!? But now she says I’ve got ‘reservations’ for the end of August. Whatever that means.

  11. From the inside looking out this is pretty funny. Sorry Penny. I speak from experience when I say you’ll be fine and more than likely your Mom will be too. Inside secret well loved Shelties are usually favorite daycampers (when they aren’t too yappy) And you know what else–when shelties come with nice, Moms they receive bonus love and treats!

    • Well, it’s good to know an expert like you feel I’ll be ok with this. I think I will too. I will just have to buckle down and start sucking up to those nice girls. They say they’ll let me play outside 3 or 4 times a day, so that’s good. And maybe I can worm a treat out of them too.

  12. Well Penny, you are smiling away on the porch, so I guess YOU passed muster with your possible caretakers and they passed muster with MOM. It is always good to have an ace in the hole as you get through life. My words of advice for the evening. 🙂
