I took myself out to Kensington, a favorite park for bird photography, on Easter Sunday morning because I figured it would be empty.

And, in some ways, it was. There were no families enjoying barbecue, and no busloads of school kids enjoying a field trip.
No one was feeding the little birds.

But photographers? Oh yea, photographers with their long, heavy lenses are not going to let a beautiful spring morning get lost in a holiday!

Still I bet most of us out there that morning managed to get at least a few (dozen) great shots.

And long ago, on a previous post I promised I’d show you more birds.

So here you go. I’ll try to limit this to some of my most favorite from that early morning walk in the woods a month ago.

But it’s hard. I have so many favorites.

As I study each of these I’m transported back to that cool morning, surrounded by hungry birds, the deer watching from further back in the trees, the squirrels hurrying so as not to be left out.

The chipmunks hoarding, the sunlight shifting.

It’s always a magical time at Kensington, no matter what part of the park you visit.

But if you want to experience wildlife in a more intimate manner, get there in the morning on a weekday before the crowds and walk the trails at the Nature Center.

Or early on a holiday morning. That works too.

So tell me, which image is YOUR favorite?

I’m glad you liked it! On this walk the cranes were pretty much ignoring me which is fine, they can be intimidating. A pair of them walked past me, as in within a foot of me, without looking at me…and strutted on down the path.

I love them all, but the Nuthatch in flight really caught my eye – followed very very closely by the last one, the Sandhill Crane. You caught a view I think I’ve never seen or thought of capturing and it’s wonderful!

Every time I’m out there I try to capture the wings movement on the birds as they flit and fly around my hand. My eyes don’t see the wings like this, you have to have a fast shutter speed and then focus a bit outside of your hand to do it…it’s hard. As for the crane, he just wasn’t engaging with me at all which was just fine by me.

How can I pick when I enjoyed them all?!? Well, okay, if I must. I love the chickadee and the nuthatch. The red-headed woodpecker duo is great, too. And I’m still marveling over the red-winged blackbird eating from your hand. I’ve seen those things here, but I’ve never thought to try luring them to me with food.

I’ll let you in on a secret. The chickadee is my favorite image of this group. I was actually shooting the beech leaves with the sun shining through them when I heard him, right above my head. He was talking to me about the fact he wanted a treat. So I stopped shooting the leaves, after getting him of course, and offered him a hand of treats and he picked his favorite peanut and was happy. I was happy too.

He WAS awfully cute, and nibbling on a nut that I didn’t provide. He didn’t even ask me for anything, he was happy with his walnut.

I’ve never really thought about how many birds have a flash of bright orange or red on them – how curious! Wonderful photos, thank you, Linda xx

I’ve been thinking about it since – it must be a “glamorous look at me thing”, but I really would have thought smaller birds would want a “don’t see me” camouflage and the red dot would their cover! Who knows!?

I like the black squirrel photo the best. They’re rare around here but do catch my eye. Great photo.

I’m glad you like it. The squirrels compete pretty well with the birds in the asking for food division.

My favorite? Love the nuthatch in flight, but the chickadee makes my heart smile, I have a soft spot for them.
You’re right, it is a magical place. What an amazing way to connect with nature.

As always, I love your bird photography! As I’ve said before, this looks like an amazing place to visit. If forced to choose a favorite, I’d say the nuthatch in flight but they are all wonderful.
