This and that about a sheltie

Trees 1163We’ve had a series of really beautiful days, warm and sunny, makes a person (and a Sheltie) want to go camping again, even though all the camping equipment had been put away for the season.  So on a whim I put up the little tent because it’s easier than the larger one to assemble.  Of course this little tent doesn’t have a doggie window, and it’s too small to put my inflated mattress inside.  So I dragged out a bunch of pillows and a couple of blankets and we settled in.  The first night we made it until 6 a.m. when I woke up FREEZING cold.  The temp outside was just under 50 degrees.  I reached for my second blanket and found that it had been taken over by Katie who was curled up in a tiny little ball, her nose in her tail, sound asleep.  I tried to go back to sleep but I was too cold, so I woke her up and we went inside.  It was worth getting cold, though, because the stars at 6 a.m. were absolutely amazing.

The second night was forecast to be even colder.  It was already only 50 degrees at 11:30 when I was heading to bed.  I decided not to sleep in the tent, opting for heat and comfort instead.  I asked Katie as I turned off the TV if she was ready to go to bed, then I headed into the bathroom to brush my teeth.  When I came back out she was standing at attention at the back door, figuring we were going camping again.  I laughed and said OK, and we grabbed MORE blankets and settled in, me with four blankets and her with her own pillow and blanket.  We only made it to 1 a.m… she heard something and that was the end of camping out.  She barked and crawled on top of me and kept whining.  So we gave it up.  That might be all the camping for us for the summer.  We’ll see.

Yesterday the neighbor across the street was getting a new roof.  We were alerted to that fact by our Sheltie alarm dog.  They had a truck in their driveway, lifting the new shingles up onto the roof, and she WANTED US TO KNOW ABOUT IT RIGHT NOW!  She and I sat out in our front yard for quite awhile, watching all the work going on over there.

And tonight I spent four hours watching an obedience trial where a few people I know were showing their talented dogs.  I’ve always watched video of excellent dogs and thought that Katie wasn’t ready for trials, but tonight, though I did watch a lot of really great dogs, I saw several in novice and even higher levels that weren’t any better than Katie.  I kept saying, “Well, KATIE could do that!” as I watched.  It inspired me enough to come home and do a heeling pattern with her around the living room sofa!

When I walked in the door tonight she was all over me.  Sniffing all those other dogs, she’s pretty sure I cheated on her.  Silly girl, I’d never do that!

Tricky T-day again already!

Guess what finally arrived at the library yesterday!  The 101 tricks book!  Katie appears to be less than excited, but that’s because she didn’t get to see it until after her bedtime, when I finally arrived home from work.

katie-1719 I haven’t had time to study anything yet, but I have hope!  Meanwhile, last Saturday I took Katie to our local pet store and purchased an inexpensive CLICKER!  It’s really loud.  And worse, Katie HATES HATES HATES the clicker.  I sat on the floor with a bunch of treats and called her.  Clicked when she came to me and attempted to give her a treat.  The clicker caused her to back away, eyes wide.  I tried again.  She backed up further.  Didn’t want anything to do with the clicker OR the treats OR me!  I tried several times, tossing her the treats which she gulped down, but she wouldn’t come near me.  Over the past 3 days we’ve tried a few times, but she still HATES the clicker.  I’m not sure if this is normal and if I should keep trying to get her to come to associate it with treats.

Then I tried the free timing that Ludo explained by putting a large tin in the living room and seeing what she’d do with it.  I didn’t use the clicker, it was scary enough for her to have something in the living room “THAT WASN’T THERE BEFORE MOM!  katie-1716 IT DOESN’T BELONG THERE MOM!  WHAT’S IT DOING IN MY LIVING ROOM MOM?  I DON’T LIKE IT!      NOT AT ALL!  oh…there’s a treat on the top?  Well…maybe…I’ll just take that treat off your hands, you know, just help myself to that tasty morsel… ”  katie-1717 But that’s about all she would do.  She wouldn’t have anything to do with it except to take a treat off the top and stare at it intently.

So far, our tricky t-day isn’t all that tricky is it!  Well, we HAVE been working on “walking the board” in an attempt to get her over her fear of the dogwalk at agility.  Not that we’ve been able to actually GO to agility class, but maybe someday.  So, we practiced that a bit this week.   katie-1695 We played with the frisbee as a treat in between working on our obedience skills, heeling, staying, standing and then running on the board.  She’s almost at the point that I can say “Walk the board!” and she’ll go (almost) on her own and run the board.  She stops though if I’m not running next to her, to make sure that’s what I really meant. katie-1704 She’s not quite ready to just run it herself.  She has, however, on occassion, gone over and walked over the board all by herself without any direction at all from me.  Then she looks at me and grins as if to say, “SEE?  I can do this board thing..where’s my treat?”

Silly girl.

Not so successful day at doggie school

katie-450 Katie and I had an opportunity to drop into a competitive obedience class this morning. Most Saturday mornings I have to work, but for whatever reason my random schedule has me working 5-9 tonight. I like that this class has a drop-in policy that just costs me $10 to attend, whenever I can make it.

The problems began almost immediately. Even though Katie and I have on occasion gone to the park and practiced our heel, you wouldn’t know it. She’s better when we do a little bit, but every day. So while we were doing the heeling in a big circle we were pretty much out of control the whole time.

Plus to add to the excitement there was a little papillon that Katie had never met before.  In fact, I don’t think she’s ever seen a dog this small!  You can go here http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/papillon.htm to see a picture of a papillon.  Whenever we got near Coco Katie would jerk at the leash and try to sniff.  She couldn’t take her eyes off of the cute little thing.  Finally, midway through the class I asked Coco’s owner if it was OK for Katie to meet Coco.  We tried to get them to meet, but Coco was barking at Katie, and Katie was bowing down barking, or backing up barking.  I think Katie thought Coco was a SQUIRREL!  Squirrel alert Mom!!  Right here in class too!!!!

Katie did OK with her stand for exam.  She moved a bit, but at least it was toward the male “judge” instead of shyly backing away.  And she stood for me when I asked her, which she doesn’t always do.  We need to work on that more, but it’s hard to find strangers who will go up to her and pet her!

Then we did sits and stays.  What a disaster!  I don’t know what was up, but Katie was done with school.  On her sit (which was only 2 minutes) she got almost to the end, watching the other dogs get up and get set back down.  Then she just stood up and began wandering around!  What’s up with THAT?!  I got her to sit again by just yelling sit from halfway across the room, and she did.  It was like “OOPS!  I forgot MOM!”  Then on to down and stay.  Well.  There isn’t even a word for the disaster this turned out to be.  She almost immediately popped up into a sit.  I went back and couldn’t get her down for the longest time.  She popped up again a bit later.  I went back and eventually got her into a down again.  The third time she popped up into a stand I went and got her and moved her out of the line.  She was too distracting to everyone.  And I know she can do this, she just couldn’t do it today.

Her recalls from across the room were both beautiful.  She loves to run, and she looks beautiful doing it.  She gets a gold star for that.

All in all I can’t blame her.  We just haven’t been working on this stuff enough.  She needs to be outside in the park or the yard doing each of these things every day.  I just need to make myself get her out there.  I know I won’t be able to go to any trials, as I work every weekend, and maybe that’s why I haven’t been motivated.  But it’s like training for a marathon and then not being able to run the race.  You still get the benefit from the training.  So I have to remember that Katie and I will still enjoy our relationship more if we both understand the obedience rules.  Even without being able to show them off (or not!) in a trial.

She’s sleeping now.  Of course.  Crazy dog calmed right down when we got home.

School results, cause we know you're sitting with bated breath wondering…

katie-257

Yesterday Katie and I got to go to an advanced competitive obedience class. It meets every Saturday morning, but I’m usually working, so this was the first time I’d been to it. Katie’s first time too! 🙂

We got there pretty early, so we walked around in the parking lot of the mall, sniffing stuff and doing the potty thing. She’s getting good at being able to go in strange places, which is handy. After I got that all cleaned up and thrown away we ventured inside. There were only a few other dogs there at that point, two big Rotweillers and a big German Shepherd. They were practicing coming, and stopping and going DOWN! and waiting. They all looked good, very professional. I felt WAAAY out of my league. I had never called Katie from across the room, then yelled “DOWN” when she got part of the way and had her go down like they were doing. Katie had never waited to chase after a toy until she had been told to “GO GET IT!” Heck she didn’t even heel very well; while these dogs were attached to their people at the hip, gazing adoringly at them, ready to respond to every whim, Katie heeled with her nose on the ground, looking to pick up any leftover treats. SIGH. I was intimidated, and whispered in her ear that maybe we were in the wrong place.

More people came in with their dogs, another couple of Shepards, a Boxer, a Wheaton Terrier, a Doberman, an Australian Shepherd.  All of them bigger than Katie.  All of them with more experience, and it appeared, more confident handlers.  Poor Katie!  So we started going around the room in a big circle, heeling as the instructor called out commands and worked one of the Rottweilers.  Katie was keeping up pretty well, though still not exactly where she needed to be.  Then the instructor commanded us to do a moving down.  Unsure what that was I sort of watched.  Everyone put their dogs into a down, Katie went down too.  Then everyone started walking but the dogs stayed!  WOW!  Katie stayed too and I trotted to get back in my spot.   The humans walked around the room, up next to the dogs, until we got back to our own dog.  Not a dog moved a muscle.  Even Katie.  I was so proud of her.  We did several other things with our heeling, and she did pretty well.

Then we did sits and downs.  A THREE MINUTE sit!  That is forever.  Katie sat between the Boxer and a Shepherd.  We all walked way down to the other end of the room.  She stared at me.  I stared back.  People started talking amongst themselves and one by one almost all the dogs broke.  Katie kept looking at me.  I kept looking at her with my arms folded, my feet planted apart.  She looked at all the other dogs moving, getting yelled at, getting reset up.  She looked back at me, I looked back at her.  She never moved!  I was so so HAPPY with her!  Of course then we did the down.  FIVE minutes, though I didn’t know how long it was because I missed what the instructor said.  I got her into a down, walked away, then faced her from the other end of the room.  Arms folded.  Feet planted.  We watched each other.  Some of the dogs flopped over and went to sleep.  Katie and I just watched each other.  She woud occassionally shift her hips, you could see she was thinking about what was up.  Was she done working?  Was it OK to explore.  She looked at the other dogs, no one was wandering.  She looked at me.  I looked back.  And she NEVER MOVED!  I can not believe my little hyper dog lasted 5 minutes without breaking!  Such a girl!  She got lots of treats for that when we went back to them!

Then it was Stand for Exam.  Well.  Katie HATES being touched, especially by a stranger.  She is always happy for people to come up to her, but when they reach out to pet her she backs up.  She rarely does well on this, sometimes she won’t shy away too much, but she never stands still.  Guess what?  She let two different strange men walk up to her and run their hand along her back and didn’t move.  I was six feet away from her and she was standing in the middle of a room full of strangers and she let them touch her and didn’t balk.  At this point I am beginning to wonder if I brought someone else’s dog!

Of course she was good on her recalls, she loves that game, didn’t even anticipate and break early.  She was perfect.

So all I really need to work on is heeling, getting her to heel where she’s supposed to, rather than surging ahead or getting behind, and especially getting her to stop checking the floor out for good things to eat.  Hopefully the weather will hold and we can go to the park and practice some more.

Meanwhile I am so proud of her!  What a good girl!

Out of control rally fun match

I worked all day today, rushed home, grabbed the dog and drove 45 miles south to a fun match this evening. The result? Katie was out of control. We had little to no time to warm up, though the facilities were very nice. She was scared; she loves to go to school, but when we arrived she knew right away this wasn’t any school she’d ever been to before. She immediately peed all over the asphalt behind the car. Poor girl, she’s never done that before!

Inside we were one of the first few people there, so we started right out with Rally. They were really good with me. There was a “off set figure 8” that I had never seen before that some lady explained and explained to me. Then the judge explained it again better! Also a right step that wasn’t set up very well and that we never did do quite right.

Katie was a wild thing, paying attention to the other dogs, other rings, loud noises, people going by. She didn’t focus on me until the judge asked me if I had treats, which I did. Once Katie figured out I had treats she focused a lot better! LOL! But still.

They let me go through the course twice with a judge and we learned a lot. But half way through the second time Katie just sat down. Then jumped on me. She was WAY DONE MOM! We finished strong though once I got her moving again.

In obedience they were really patient with me too. Most of the issue is me, obviously. The obedience judge gave me some good pointers for stand for exam, and for getting her to heel closer to my leg. So that was well worth it, though I was somewhat embarrassed by how out of it she was.

Then I FORGOT to stick around for sits and downs, which we really could have used practice on. On the other hand, Katie was not in the mood to sit still for very long.

So all in all, it was an OK $10.00 spent. It did show me that we have a TON of work to do, mostly on heeling correctly. The rest will come from that. And from me studying my rally move cards more!

Don’t know about Katie, but I’m exhausted! I have to work all day tomorrow and all day Sunday, so I’m headed for sleep now. Unfortunately, Katie, now at home, wants to PLAY!

Silly dog.

Different day, different dog

Katie and I went to another fun match last night. It was a spur of the moment decision and we hadn’t practiced at all since last weekend. She was pretty unfocused just walking around waiting for our turn, and she wasn’t much more focused in the ring. I couldn’t get her to heel near me, she got distracted by a mirror along the wall that we walked toward, and off leash she was mostly out of line. She DID hold her sit and down even without me talking to her, though I did have to point at her twice.

The judge said that Katie isn’t ready to be off leash and that I should use a shoelace to get her to heal where she’s supposed to. I agree she doesn’t seem to know where she’s supposed to be. I think I need to start again with the “watch me” healing to get her back in position. Plus Katie sat twice at each halt. This is coming from me correcting her when she doesn’t sit close enough when we stop. Now it appears if she doesn’t get a treat she thinks she’s wrong and she scoots over. SIGH. Wonder how to fix that??

After our run I was talking to another lady. She told me that when you do obedience the dog can’t have any tags on, so I need to get another collar to use for obedience showings. No one ever said that before. And then she poked her finger into Katie’s side and said “and she’s FAT too!” which actually is something I’m beginning to notice, that Katie may be getting overweight with all the treats of training.

So all in all, not that successful a run, though it only cost $5.00 and I learned quite a bit. We have so much work to do! Sometimes it seems overwhelming! But the park near us is open again, the one where we worked every day last summer. So back to work we go!

Fun match was FUN!

katie-13641

This morning Katie and I went to our first obedience fun match! It was really a 4-H  kids dog obedience match, but there was a ring for novice adults and their dogs, so a couple of friends from our last obedience class went with their Shepards, and I went with my Katie. It was less than 5 minutes from home, and it only cost $10, so how could I not go?  I took my camera and one of the husbands took a few pictures, but the lighting was terrible, so what I share with you will be grainy.  Still, it’s Katie in a ring doing WELL!

katie-1367

Katie did her heel pretty good… most of the errors were Mom, not dog…though she still doesn’t like to be right next to my leg.  She sat instantly each time I halted, without me having to tell her, and she came like lightening on her recall.  When I asked her to finish (going around me to sit on my left, which she does just beautifully at home) she walked around behind me but didn’t come sit next to me.  Turns out there was something behind me against the wall that she had to investigate!  They cleaned that up after our run.  LOL!  She did great on the sit stay (see picture above where she was distracted but didn’t break her sit!) and even  made it all the way to the end of the 3 minute down stay!!  That was the longest three minutes of our lives!  She shifted a bit and I knew she was thinking about wandering, but she didn’t! GOOD GIRL!.  We did two runs, the second off leash, and she did just as good that time too.  I am so proud of her!

katie-1370

One of the friends brought her family which included two little girls, ages 7 and maybe 4 years old.  They were instantly in love with Katie; she is so much smaller (and “fluffier!”) than their 8 month old Shepard.  Katie isn’t used to kids and initially backed away (once all the way under the chair I was sitting on, I had to tell her “TUNNEL!” to get her to come back out to me!) each time they approached.  But by the end of the morning Katie was playing with the older one, and tolerating the younger’s more intense petting.  It was really good for her and I’m proud of her for that too.

And even better?  There was no food allowed in the ring, so she did all that work without getting a treat!  I gave her treats in between runs, and told her what a good dog she was.  She snuggled in my lap for awhile, licked my face and seemed to have a good time.  But I know she’s exhausted.  How do I know that?  Cause she’s SLEEPING!  Or trying to.  The Mom keeps taking pictures of her and that is so distracting to a girl needing her beauty sleep, don’t ya know.

katie-1379

We’re having a great weekend, sunny, warm…hope you are all well and having good weekends too!

Now we’re off to nap!

Sometimes snow is pretty. Even in March

Really.  Though I suppose those of you out there getting snow in the South aren’t convinced of the fact that snow is pretty.

We’ve had a busy few days here in Michigan, starting Thursday when Aunt G. died through yesterday, the day of her funeral.  In between the family things we needed to attend to I also took Katie to a couple hours of advanced dog obedience, where we worked on stuff needed to compete in obedience.  She was off the wall and not very focused, the result of days inside with none of us around to practice with.  But we did get to do a typical obedience run off leash which was very fun.  And we got to do some jumps because they are included in higher level Rally, and Katie LOVES to jump.  She came home and went to sleep.  Two hours of being on your toes apparently exhausts a typical sheltie girl.

We had some snow too…though nothing in comparison to what some of you are enduring now.  Our snow on Saturday was very pretty, soft white flakes floating slowly down while the sun was coming up.  It was beautiful and for once we didn’t mind seeing it because we know that the snow season is almost over.  Well we think so anyway.  Katie was like a puppy, trying to catch all the snowflakes in her mouth.  I told her she couldn’t catch them all, but she sure wanted to.

katie-1292

I also had to work quite a bit during these past few days, the result of not being scheduled for four days in a row!  So I didn’t get to go to everything Aunt G’s family planned, but I did spend most of Sunday at the funeral home with my husband, Aunt V. and Uncle W., the two surviving siblings of my husband’s mother’s large family.  It was nice to see distant relatives but I wish we were meeting under happier circumstances.  Isn’t that always the way,  we just don’t take time for family things until there’s a crisis.  We should try harder, don’t you think, to get together for famility events that don’t involve funerals?

Katie and I hope those of you with lots of snow (we hate to tell you, we have none on the ground except where we have been piling it up all winter) are digging out and getting back to normal.  But don’t you agree that snow really is pretty? 🙂
