Bird dog?

Katie and I went to the park yesterday afternoon.  There was a new sign there that said we weren’t allowed to train bird dogs for several months during bird nesting season.

katie-1596katie-1597

Good thing we were warned about that, because you know Katie is such a bird dog!  But we did have several incidents along our walk that involved birds.  Right at the beginning of our walk I noticed two families of Canadian geese near the pond.  One family’s babies already had the markings of adult birds, the other family’s little ones were still fuzzy balls of fluff.  I decided we’d take a route that totally avoided them as Sheltie + parent geese do not make a good mix.

We headed into the mowed paths of a big hilly field.  Katie enjoyed sniffing along the edges, at the flowers and traces of other dogs, who knows.  Suddenly she went stiff, then lunged and up out of the tall grass right next to us flew a fat brown partridge (or something like that).  Katie leaped straight up in the air and I screamed.  Guess we weren’t meant to be bird hunters!  Good thing Katie was on a leash.

We moved on down the path, and Katie went into her bird dog alert mode again. katie-16541 Holding tight to her leash I let her explore a little, and there was a turtle!  Way less frightening (at least to us) than the bird.  I eased Katie away so as not to disturb it and we moved on.  katie-16552

Just a bit further along the way we began to be dive-bombed by tree swallows, as we were passing their nesting boxes.  I kept ducking and urging Katie to “come on” as they swooped low over my head, making clucking noises just inches away from my hat.  We rushed through that section of the path!

katie-1656 Eventually we arrived at a resting spot, and Katie had a bit to drink.  I’ve been working on getting her not to be afraid to drink out of this contraption that allows me to carry water on my belt as well as serves as a bowl for her.  She decided yesterday that she was thirsty enough not to worry about the funny shape.

We also got to see a bluebird couple.  They were sitting on the fence that surrounds the softball field.  A game was in progress but that didn’t seem to bother them.  The male and female were swooping down into the outfield to catch bugs.  There was another bird hanging out on the fence, a little brownish bird that I thought was a sparrow or house finch.  On our way back to the car the blue birds were back on the fence, as was the little brown bird.  Turns out the little bird was a baby bluebird.  As Mom and Dad got bugs they’d fly up to the fence and feed the youngster!  How cool!  We watched for a bit and then wandered past.

And then, on our drive home we saw a wild turkey along the road near the house!  Katie didn’t notice it, but it was the last bird in our bird filled experience of walking in the park.    Maybe I should get Katie a set of binoculars so she can watch the birds more closely.

Tricky Tuesday

katie-14221 Katie and I have been working on “shake” this week.  She learned it in about 2 seconds as long as treats were involved.  But no treat?  No shake!  I don’t have video but if I did, you’d see that she just grudingly offers her paw when I ask for shake, even with the treat.  She knows what I want, but she doesn’t want to give in and play the game.  She’s way too smart for me!

Today I have the afternoon off.  I promised her we’d do something fun.  That usually involves car rides and the park.  So off we go!

High hopes

vegetable-garden-2009-002

After last year’s debacle of a garden with the weeds out of control and where not much else grew I swore I wasn’t going to put in a vegetable garden again. Ever.  Too much work.  Can buy vegetables at the farmers market cheap.  Bugs, rabbits and deer are the only beneficiaries of my garden.  Etc.  But then I changed my mind and decided to try one more time. I have high hopes that this year vegetables will grow and weeds won’t. Today I spent most of the day getting the garden ready to plant. I’m using some weed barrier this time. Though I have to say, getting it down during the windy afternoon was a pain in the …well, you know. Tomorrow I need to go and buy those pin things that hold the weed barrier down; the rocks I was using aren’t doing the job so well. Regardless, the garden is planted. Tomatoes, green beans (bush and pole), beets, chard and herbs.

Katie wanted to help, but I remember from last year how she liked to sleep on top of things that were just planted. So she had to wait in her kennel till I got done. She was sad and complained the whole time.  Between her barking and the wren chirping angrily at me and the robin buzzing my head (you can see the robin in the picture at the top of this post!) I got a little frustrated.  But it’s done.  For now.  Should probably go out and weed tonight, get a head start.  But I’m too tired.

Katie and I went to the park after dinner.  She did her heeling beautifully until I ran out of treats.  Then we just goofed off.  The pretty dandelions have all turned to fuzz now.  Katie didn’t care, she just enjoyed being at the park.

katie-1572She probably brought home a few special dandelion seeds to plant in her Daddy’s pretty green lawn.  Shhhhhh!  Don’t tell him!  She especially liked sniffing around the taller grass, checking out paths that might need investigating.

katie-1579Though she was also always up for a quick recall.  Just never know when Mom might have found another treat hidden deep in the recesses of her treat pouch.  Can’t always tell ya know, might be worth the run back to check it out!

katie-1582

All in all a fun day.  But tiring.  Time to get some shut eye.  It’s back to work tomorrow!  Hope you all had a wonderful weekend!

Come ON Mom!

katie-1505 I’ve been so busy coming and going from work that poor Katie hasn’t been able to go to her favorite park in awhile. Today is the first day in ten days I haven’t had to work. And lucky us, the sun is shining! So guess what? We will definitely make some time for park visiting. And she can’t wait! I can’t wait either, but I think we should at least eat breakfast first.  More later.  katie-1513

Doggie plans

trees-9071

We’re going to doggie school tomorrow morning! I don’t get to take Katie as much as I would like, economics being what they are, and my work schedule being so random. But tomorrow I don’t have to be at work till the afternoon, so Katie and I can attend a competitive obedience class for a small drop in fee. YEA!

I should be working more with Katie.  Since our last disastrous fun match we’ve worked only a little bit in between the thunder storms and random work schedules. It’s hard to heel around the sofa, but we’ve done some of that and a little bit of work at the park too. She’s getting better, but not nearly as good as she was last summer when we worked every day at the park. Of course I didn’t have a job back. Darn job interfering in dog progress!  LOL!

It was 79 degrees outside when I emerged from the library after a full day of being inside a dark old damp clammy building. Can’t waste an evening like that, so Katie and I went to the local softball park.  I thought we’d practice some heeling, but  Dad had just fed her and she wasn’t nearly as interested in me as she was in sniffing stuff.

katie-1463

She sniffed the pond for a bit but it wasn’t particularly interesting, so off we went down a path into a big field.  katie-1474

She had to keep coming back for me as I was busy taking pictures of all the pretty brown grasses, and wasn’t keeping up.  I found a couple of pretty places for her to model for me as well.  There was a viewing deck at the far back of the property that I’d never seen before.  Not sure what we were supposed to be viewing, but we tried to look like we knew what we were doing.  katie-1481

And there was a pretty red twig dogwood bush out there, shining in the lowering sun that I asked Katie politely if she’d sit next to.  She did, but it was grudgingly.  She really wanted to be running around and sniffing more exciting things rather than posing for me.  katie-1491

It was a pretty long walk, and we were both hot and sweaty when we got back to the car.  Well.  I was sweaty, she was panting.  She had a drink, so did I and then we went home.  She’s sleeping now.  This walkie thing is wonderful, wears her right out!

Wish us well in school tomorrow morning.  I need all the help I can get!

Went for a walk

trees-866

Yesterday it was finally warm enough not to freeze off vital body parts, so I took myself off for a walk. I used to have a favorite four mile run, and since I haven’t been able to run for a very long time, I walked the route, just to see what had changed during this last long winter.  I thought about taking the dog, but decided I wanted to walk further than she was able to go.

It was a beautiful day, blue sky, bright sunshine.  I walked along a packed dirt road, realizing that it was a perfect day for a run.  But I’m in no shape to begin running yet, still nursing the stress fracture in my foot.  So I settled for a walk.  Turns out it wasn’t such a bad thing.

At the two mile mark there is a small park with nature trails that I have never explored.  Usually I am running as I go by this spot, and have never taken the time to stop and find out what was there.  I saw this past winter a map that said there was a heron rookery at the end of these trails.  So yesterday, armed with my trusty camera I headed down the trail to see what I could see.

My first decision was which way to go at the fork in the trail

trees-877 Hmm…should I go into the woodlands or the meadow?  I decided maybe a heron rookery would be in the woods, but I wasn’t at all sure.  The woodland path headed downhill, and I reminded myself that I’d have to come back up anything downhills I traversed.  Funny.  In the old days when I was in better shape I never would have thought about that.  Sad.

I stopped to take a few pictures of the path ..

trees-886

and some fungus on a tree.

trees-8791

Right about then I heard such a shrieking, grating, loud noise coming from up ahead.  It was the sound of blue herons!  Disturbed blue herons!  I couldn’t see anything, so I hurried down the trail toward the noise.  Not too far ahead this is what I saw, up in the sky:

trees-882

Can you see them?  There were thirty or forty (hard to count them all!) blue herons flying in big circles above the rookery.  I counted eighteen nests, but it was hard to see, there are probably many more.  The herons kept flying in higher and higher circles, their squawking decreased, and it became more quiet in the woods.  The path continued downhill, but was becoming waterlogged and muddy, so I eventually turned around and climbed the hill back to the road.   It was an amazing experience.  Once the leaves are on the trees I won’t be able to watch the nests, so I hope to go back and watch again soon.  I don’t think I was the one that disturbed them, as I was quite far away, taking quiet pictures.  But we’ll see if they all go up in flight next time I’m there.

On the way back home I walked through the wetlands down below the rookery, enjoying the sun and blue skies.

trees-896

It took me forever to do this four miles, especially with the side trip into the woods.  I doubt you could call it a workout, but at least I was out on a walk!

trees-8991

Later in the evening Katie and I went to the park so that she could walk and sniff around as well.  I think we both need to do this more often, especially since the weather seems to have broken.

Shoes are broken in too.  Fun times.

Park! Got to go to the Park!!

katie-14081

The weather gave us a break today, sunny, not so windy, highs in the 60’s. And I didn’t have to work! Can’t let an opportunity like this get by us, so Katie and I went to our small local park. It’s really just a couple of softball fields, a soccer field and some paths mowed in a big field with a couple of ponds sprinkled about, but it’s one of Katie’s favorite spots in the whole world. I like it because it’s close to home and still scenic.

In this picture Katie isn’t on her leash, but that was the only time I tried this.  She’s really good at sit and stay, and we were far far away from any cars.  But still…our trainers say the only time a dog should be off leash is when you’re 100% sure they are safe, and for Katie and me, that’s a good rule.  But I wanted a good portrait of her without the leash in the picture.  The rest of the time she was on one of two leashes I had with me.

There were lots of great things to sniff!

katie-1409

katie-1413

katie-1417

We tried to do a self portrait of the two of us, but Katie wasn’t that into me and didn’t want to sit still.  After all we hadn’t been to the park all winter and there was SO MUCH to explore!  Silly Mom wanting to sit and take pictures!

katie-1419

Eventually we made it down to the big pond where we explored around the edges.  We startled three gartner snakes.  Well, let’s tell the truth.  They startled us! Can you see the snake in the photo below?

trees-snake-april-09

We also startled a frog into jumping into the pond with a big PLOP!  Katie is a big wimp, all bark, no action.  She jumped just about as high as the frog all the while backing up!

katie-1424

We settled in for a bit  just watching the water.  The wind was blowing toward us, making little waves wash up on the shore.  It was very relaxing!

katie-1433

What a wonderful time at the park!  Hope you all had a great day too!

Different day, different dog

Katie and I went to another fun match last night. It was a spur of the moment decision and we hadn’t practiced at all since last weekend. She was pretty unfocused just walking around waiting for our turn, and she wasn’t much more focused in the ring. I couldn’t get her to heel near me, she got distracted by a mirror along the wall that we walked toward, and off leash she was mostly out of line. She DID hold her sit and down even without me talking to her, though I did have to point at her twice.

The judge said that Katie isn’t ready to be off leash and that I should use a shoelace to get her to heal where she’s supposed to. I agree she doesn’t seem to know where she’s supposed to be. I think I need to start again with the “watch me” healing to get her back in position. Plus Katie sat twice at each halt. This is coming from me correcting her when she doesn’t sit close enough when we stop. Now it appears if she doesn’t get a treat she thinks she’s wrong and she scoots over. SIGH. Wonder how to fix that??

After our run I was talking to another lady. She told me that when you do obedience the dog can’t have any tags on, so I need to get another collar to use for obedience showings. No one ever said that before. And then she poked her finger into Katie’s side and said “and she’s FAT too!” which actually is something I’m beginning to notice, that Katie may be getting overweight with all the treats of training.

So all in all, not that successful a run, though it only cost $5.00 and I learned quite a bit. We have so much work to do! Sometimes it seems overwhelming! But the park near us is open again, the one where we worked every day last summer. So back to work we go!

Windy walk

Yesterday early evening I took Katie to another metro park for a walk. You might remember that we went out to my favorite park last week and walked while watching ducks and geese and swans. That park is quite a distance from home, so this time we went to a closer park. It’s not as fun to walk in because it’s mostly just fields and woods, and it’s over a mile before you even get into the woods! The first mile is down a BIG hill beside a hilly field. So that means on the way back the last mile will be up a very big hill.

It was very windy at the park during our walk. Katie started out excited and eager to get going.

katie-1381

We headed down the hill with her sniffing along the edge of the bike path, checking out each blade of grass.  So we weren’t moving very fast.  Eventually I got her moving, though when I asked her to “heel!” she looked at me like I was nuts.  I totally forgot I was carrying chicken in a pouch.  That probably would have motivated her!

We stopped at a bench, and thinking of the picture of Josh on the park bench after his grooming appointment I tried to get her to sit on it.

katie-1384

She didn’t like the bench at all, and this picture was taken just before she leaped off and asked me what the heck I thought I was doing!  So we kept walking down the big hill.   On our last long walk in the park she walked 3/4 of a mile out and 3/4 of a mile back to the car.  So today I figured maybe we’d walk 1 mile out and 1 mile (up the big hill) back to the car.  She seemed pretty agreeable to that.  But at 9/10 of a mile (they have all the 10th’s marked off on the bike path) she sat down.  Period.  Wasn’t moving any further.  In any direction.  Great.  We talked about it for awhile.  I told her I couldn’t carry her 9/10 of a mile up a big hill.  So we rested a bit, then turned around.  She kept wanting to continue on the way we had been heading, but I wasn’t going to get us into any more trouble than we were already in.  We stopped at every park bench to rest, and she conned me into carrying her for a couple of short spurts.

I took pictures along the way as something to do while we were resting.

katie-1387

Then with 1/2 a mile to go I remembered the CHICKEN!  Oh yea.  CHICKEN!  I asked her to heel and showed her the chicken and guess what?  All of the sudden she was full of energy!  She trotted next to me like a perfect dog.  Like the dogs I had seen walking with their people the way dogs are supposed to walk!  She heeled almost perfectly the whole 1/2 mile back to the car.  Even after I stopped giving her treats.

katie-1389

We got back to the car, she drank a little bit of water and we headed home where she fell asleep for the rest of the evening.   I need to carry water and some sort of container with me when we go for walks this long.  And remember not to lengthen our walks by too much too fast.  Just like any athlete, she can get injured if we do too much too soon.  Gotta think of her as my athlete in the family.  Certainly isn’t me anymore!

A dog gone good walk into spring

Today it finally stopped raining, and though we had fresh snow on the ground early this morning, it was gone by early afternoon.   By late afternoon it was just above 40 degrees, the sun was out and it felt like the perfect time to get a good walk in. So Katie and I drove to a metro park where I used to train for marathons. There’s a 8.5 mile paved bike path around a beautiful lake there, but I didn’t think we’d walk the whole thing. After all Katie has short legs and hasn’t ever walked that far.  And I’d probably hurt myself if we tried.

Of course I forgot the camera, but we had a great time, maybe even a better time because I wasn’t asking Katie to pose. We walked 3/4 of a mile out and back, so a total of 1.5 miles. She moved almost the whole way with her fast little sheltie prance so I got a workout too. Of course she did take quite a few sudden detours to sniff trees and leaves and mud.

We worked on her understanding that we needed to stay on our side of the middle line. She’s a girl just like her Mom, focused on the lake and not always paying attention to other people on the path. She saw swans and sandhill cranes and mallard ducks and Canadian geese. She loved watching the swans running after each other, their huge feet slapping the water. And she loved getting up close to a mallard duck pair that swam near the shore.  She did fine with the few bikes and other dogs that went by. At first I was nervous and tried to get her to “HEEL!” and focus on me, but she wasn’t at all interested in the treats I had, too much out there to watch instead. She did notice a few cars and I could tell she was thinking about barking and chasing, but she looked at me and I said “NO!” and that was that.

So all in all this was a good experience; our first longer walk ever, the first field trip since the long winter, a wonderful late afternoon activity. If it’s nice on Wednesday maybe we’ll go back. By the last quarter mile back she wasn’t prancing out at the end of her leash anymore, she was walking more slowly next to me. I thought I wore her out, but tonight I’m the one falling asleep on the sofa.  She’s keeping watch out the backdoor for marauding possums or raccoons!
