Change Is Hard

Katie's tiny teeter totter

Here’s a photo of Katie on her handmade tiny teeter totter.  Tonight she was persuaded to run across it a couple times, bounced around on it and didn’t seem too upset by the gentle banging of the board against the towels underneath.  She started out jumping off before the end of the board, as it banged on the driveway, but by the end of our short session she would go all the way to the end if I kept my hand with the treat by her nose.  I think I should try a plate with a target on it tomorrow.

This tiny totter was made using her dog walk board.  Husband screwed a couple of 1×2’s under it so that I can place a 2 inch pipe under, slightly off center, so it always tips back to the right.  It makes a nice banging noise, similar to a real teeter, especially when I take the towel out from under it.  Though when I did that tonight she got freaky, so we stopped.

I'm a long time banker having worked in banks since the age of 17. I took a break when I turned 50 and went back to school. I graduated right when the economy took a turn for the worst and after a year of library work found myself unemployed. I was lucky that my previous bank employer wanted me back. So here I am again, a long time banker. Change is hard.

  2. You could try making the bang noice when Katie’s not on the board, and giving her treats, just for listening to the noise. Not sure if that would help.

I know Misty would be a wreck with the noise too. She won’t take treats at all when Jeff is using our air nailer, while Oreo is completely unphased by the tool.

  3. Marie – yep Katie is a cutie alright!

Sara – I’ll try that idea. Misty is such a foodie it’s hard to believe that there is ever a time she won’t take treats…but I know what you mean. Katie won’t take treats when we’re first in a new place and she’s scared.

  6. That teeter is awesome! I bet it will do the trick of desensitizing Katie to the noise and motion!

What do you think is happening with Bree? It’s been a long time since she has posted anything.

  7. Keep trying Katie, it’ll be less scary after a while. I think!

  8. Ricky, I don’t know what’s going on with Bree, I’ve sent cards, and a week ago I sent a short letter addressed to her family, but I haven’t heard anything back. I did get a handmade card from her shortly before she went back to the hospital as per her last post.

I have very bad feelings about what is going on. I don’t know what she originally went into the hospital for, but I think probably there is a problem with infection, and that could be really dangerous. I’m so worried.

  9. I’m really worried too but haven’t been nearly as good about sending her cards and letters like you. I sure wish we knew what was happening.

  10. We love the teeter. Maybe Dad will make one for us, or maybe that would be for the termites.
