Change Is Hard

Rejoice! The recession is over!

Heard on the radio during my long commute home tonight that the recession was officially over back in June of 09.  Gee.  Guess they forgot to tell us that up here in Michigan.  What with our unemployment still over 15% we must not have noticed all the rejoicing in the streets back then.  I know I was still employed in a library, albeit part time.  And that I got laid off in October of 2009.

I’m pretty sure I heard that one group making this astounding announcement was a University of Michigan research group.  Huh.  That would be the same university that assured us that many librarians were retiring and that the job outlook for people with my degree looked promising.

Credibility is a bit lacking.  Just saying.

I'm a long time banker having worked in banks since the age of 17. I took a break when I turned 50 and went back to school. I graduated right when the economy took a turn for the worst and after a year of library work found myself unemployed. I was lucky that my previous bank employer wanted me back. So here I am again, a long time banker. Change is hard.

  1. So now I’m wondering why we Social Security recipients weren’t able to get an increase this year, since the recession has ended. Hmph! And the Oregon unemployment rate is still very high. Homes are still not selling. So, what neighborhood did they survey to gain this information? I’d like to visit.

  2. Yep and now people will be flocking to the symphony and spending all their excess cash on funding us so that we’ll add weeks to our season instead of constantly cutting them – this will start happening any day now that the recession is over!

  3. That’s funny, because this week, I heard we are headed for another recession. Maybe they had to put out the word taht the first one had officially ended, so they could promote the new one. Economists. They must all live in bubbles.

  6. It’s all in how you define it. If you don’t have a job, the recession will never seem to be over. If you’re a company, your profits are starting to look real good.

  7. News of the day, of the week, of the month – who can keep track of the heads and tails that are proclaimed over the airwaves? I wish the experts would just make up their minds and agree already.
