Change Is Hard

…but change is certain.

Portrait of an amazing woman

I’ve never tried portrait photography, though I’ve admired many photographic portraits over the years.  I especially love those of older people, whose faces show some of their history, whose eyes have become wise with time.  But I’m a shy photographer and asking someone to sit for me is difficult.  And of course I’m shooting with a point and shoot and never figured I had the right equipment for “real” art.

So when Kathy over at her blog Lake Superior Spirit mentioned that she had an photographic assignment from Scott at his blog Views Infinitum that required her to try portrait photography I was intrigued.  And I instantly knew who I wanted to photograph.

My husband has an Aunt who just celebrated her 95th birthday, though you wouldn’t know it to look at her.  She’s beautiful.  But she also, like most people, doesn’t feel she takes a good picture.  And I’m still shy.  So the photo I’m going to share with you was taken while she sat in her chair in her apartment looking at an ancient photo album filled with family pictures, some over 100 years old.  She was entranced enough that she didn’t notice me taking pictures.  I understand from reading that a real portrait would have her engaged with me.  We’ll work on that!

She’s sitting in her favorite chair, sunlight coming in from her left, wearing her reading glasses and telling us the names of family members in the photos.  I like that the shot includes her hand which has a character all its own.  This was taken with a point & shoot camera, on the automatic setting.  I darkened it up slightly in “post production.”

I think she might let me try again if I ask.  Now that I know there’s a “portrait” setting on my camera!

I'm a long time banker having worked in banks since the age of 17. I took a break when I turned 50 and went back to school. I graduated right when the economy took a turn for the worst and after a year of library work found myself unemployed. I was lucky that my previous bank employer wanted me back. So here I am again, a long time banker. Change is hard.

  3. I think Aunt V is gorgeous, and so is your photo. I tend to prefer unposed photos. I can almost hear Aunt V telling me a story….

  4. This is a wonderful photo of Aunt Vi. I love how she’s looking down. If she were looking right at the photographer, there wouldn’t be such an aura of involvement with a story (looking at the photo album, I mean.) I know what you mean about asking people for photos. This has been a rather challenging assignment for me, too. Just last weekend we saw a young a couple holding hands…they were so beautiful…it would have made a lovely photo….but I was too shy to jump out of the car and ask them for their photograph. Sigh. We’ll figure it out, won’t we?

  5. Your aunt looks great in the picture. She looked so engrossed in the picture and you snapped that special moment. She’s beautiful!

  7. I love this photo, Dawn. I love to take pictures and have shot a couple of weddings this year, but my favorite are candids. I love to photograph my grandma and grandpa, it’s like you said the history shows in their faces. And of course I love to shoot the dogs! (You would never know from my blog would you? LOL) I will check out those blogs in your post. Thanks!

  8. It is a fine picture.
Maybe you can avoid being shy if you say that you have an assignment. Most people are willing to help. I was asked to take pictures at a wedding, and when the guests knew that I HAD to take pictures, they posed willingly.

  9. She is a lovely person and an excellent photo. Including the hands was a good choice as they say a lot about a person.

I believe she would love to pose for you in the future so you can try out that portrait setting. 🙂

  10. This is a beautiful portrait, I took a portrait of my husband’s grandfather before but it didn’t come out too nice. I see that candid shots are nice also, I have to give this another try.
