Change Is Hard

…but change is certain.

Training Challenge #8

This week we took our cue from Oreo over at Sara’s blog.  We’re working on the vacuum cleaner!

Ever since she was a little tiny puppy Katie has hated the vacuum cleaner.  I don’t know if she thinks she is protecting me, or if it’s a game, but she barks and growls and pounces and bites the vacuum.  She’s so vicious I am afraid she’ll break a tooth.  So mostly I put her outside when I do the vacuuming, and frankly I don’t vacuum as often as I should.  Which isn’t such a bad thing when you stop and think about it.  Sort of liberating actually.

But wait.  I digress.

I can’t even touch the handle of the closet door behind which lurks the evil vacuum without her spinning in circles and barking hysterically. To actually drag the hose out creates mayhem.  And turn it ON?  Unthinkable.

So one day this week I put her in a sit/stay and opened the closet door! If she barked I closed the door and walked away.  No treat.  I tried again later.  Eventually she sat while I opened the door and she got her treat.

Next we tried MOVING the vacuum hose.  Same deal.  Sit, don’t bark and you get a treat.  I’ve left the hose and the vacuum heads sitting in the middle of the living room floor for a couple of days now.  She doesn’t have a problem with that…

…until I move that evil vacuum head…it’s not even turned ON yet…then she gets all crazy again.

Sigh.  So much more work to do.  Of course we haven’t put in the hours and hours of relaxation work that Sara and Oreo have done.  Just goes to show…if you don’t do the work, you don’t earn the treat.

My treat would be to vacuum in peace.  I think.

I'm a long time banker having worked in banks since the age of 17. I took a break when I turned 50 and went back to school. I graduated right when the economy took a turn for the worst and after a year of library work found myself unemployed. I was lucky that my previous bank employer wanted me back. So here I am again, a long time banker. Change is hard.

  1. Doing this with Eva on the first day was crazy too!
All you need is patience and very soon, Katie will get the point!
Good luck 🙂 You’re already doing very well with her.

  2. Good job for working on conquering that nasty vacuum cleaner thing–I would think patiece and breaking things down into the smallest pieces would be the key to beating the vacuum-good for you tackling that! Great training challenge

  3. Conquering the VACUUM MONSTER is a big challenge, keep practicing and before you know it you (Katie) will be looking at the vacuum like its a bug on the rug, not the BIG SCARY MONSTER. Our monster isn’t the vacuum, it is the POWER WASHER THAT SPITS WATER.

  4. Shasta views the vacuum, broom or dust mop as toys – something she should be able to play with. Bailey just looks for a quiet place to be until we’re done with that work nonsense. The other day a woman we know brought her lab puppy over for a play date – he thinks the lawn sprinklers are toys. Ours are in the ground, hers are attached to hoses – or were. She says she has no more hoses now.

  5. I took a week off from the protocol, and boy did it show when I pulled out the vacuum!

I’m like you, not vacuuming as much as before I had Oreo. I’ve learned not to care as much about having a clean house, and it is a good feeling! Life is too short to spend so much time cleaning! Let’s go in the yard and play ball instead!

Hmmm. Maybe that is why the dogs attack the vacuums? So,we’ll give up and do something fun?

  6. Even though my vacuum cleaner behavior is fairly good – say 85% – mom also vacuums a lot less than she did before she got me – LOL!

Fabulous challenge Katie and Dawn! Keep at it and Katie will get it!

  7. I’ve always treated the vacuum with my dogs like I treat any other toy from day 1 (makes it easier to deal with than after they’re ingrained). If I tell them that’s all, then that’s all. I’m so glad I never let it get that far! You’ll like it when you get there.
