Change Is Hard

…but change is certain.

Evidence for keeping a camera in your pocket at all times.

Last week my husband and I met for supper after work.  Following him home I noticed the sky was turning orange and pink, and that the clouds were all ringed in brilliant gold.  But I didn’t have my camera.

By the time I made it home, raced into the house, found the camera and made it out to the park the sky looked like this:

Then a couple of days ago I noticed the trees in the backyard glowing in the late evening light.  I went outside to investigate.  Looking east was like looking into a classical Renaissance landscape.  Well…except for the paved road:

And toward the west the sky was turning into this:

The thing I’ve learned about photography and light is that you can never outrun the sun.  That perfect photo that you catch a glimpse of will be lost while you’re looking for the camera and it can never be recaptured.

Sometimes perfect remains in your mind…and good enough is what you get.

I'm a long time banker having worked in banks since the age of 17. I took a break when I turned 50 and went back to school. I graduated right when the economy took a turn for the worst and after a year of library work found myself unemployed. I was lucky that my previous bank employer wanted me back. So here I am again, a long time banker. Change is hard.

  1. Beautiful photos – esp. the trees glowing in the sun! I can’t tell you how many times mom has said she wishes she had her camera!

  2. Love the photos. And that’s exactly why I carry a camera in my purse. Which doesn’t help a lot when I’m just wandering around near home and haven’t remembered to take my at home camera. Or my purse camera.

  5. I love the sky and how transient it is. Sometimes you are better off not running to get your camera, and enjoying the moment instead. Of course if you happened to have your camera….

  8. I try to always have a camera close at hand, but I certainly don’t always carry one with me, and I can tell you that there have been many times when i’ve stepped out from behind a wall with the dogs, who need to go potty, and seen soemthing, and turned and run full tilt a quarter mile back to the car to get the camera, yanking the dogs with me, and run full tilt back, and the light has changed, and not for the better. I’ve done so much running to try to get a camera, and I don’t think I ever get the shot.

  9. Ellen, no the light moves so fast, you can never get the shot you saw if you have to run (pulling the dogs! LOL!) for the camera! I’ve done it too..never works out!

  10. Yep. That camera should be with us 24/7. Never leave our hands–even in sleep. You never know. lol! I had the same thing happen the other night. Decided it was too dark to take pics so left the camera at home. And the clouds were absolutely gorgeous with wonderful spirit-shapes and backlit colors. Sigh. Never leave the camera at home.
