Change Is Hard

…but change is certain.

Going to work

I had to smile this week at Sara’s Wordless Wednesday (scroll down to Wednesday) photo of her desk at work.  Mine used to look like that – back in the days of paper.

Come along and I’ll take you to my desk!  First the commute; about 40 minutes depending on the traffic.

And the sun.

We have what the newscasters laughingly call the “Detroit Squint” most mornings.  At different times during the year we’re driving almost directly into the rising sun.

Certainly slows the commute.

After a colorful drive to work I arrive at my cubicle.  Not so colorful.  And this truly is the way it looks.  I didn’t clean up for the photo or anything!  We do all our work paperlessly.  Is that a word?

And this is how the building looks when I leave in the evening.

Sometimes I get pretty sunsets on my commute home, but not last night.

Today, Saturday morning, the birch trees are glowing with morning light and I’m glad I’m not sitting in my beige work world.

Enjoy your weekend!

I'm a long time banker having worked in banks since the age of 17. I took a break when I turned 50 and went back to school. I graduated right when the economy took a turn for the worst and after a year of library work found myself unemployed. I was lucky that my previous bank employer wanted me back. So here I am again, a long time banker. Change is hard.

  1. Kind of reminds me of my internship, without the pretty sunrise. I usually go in around 2:30 and leave around 8, to a quiet building and complete darkness.

  2. Ok, I understand no paper, but I think you need some pictures of Katie, oh and maybe your family too. LOL

  3. Can I send you some neon sticky notes or something?

My desk only looks like that on the last day of school. I’m guessing you don’t need to empty your recycling bin everyday either! You sure are more earth friendly that me.

  4. I still have lots of papers even thought we chart all our stuff in the computer. Wow, your desk is really neat. I dont think my desk ever looks like that. Diana

  5. It may be beige and paperless but it is so clean and neat too. Your desk does not give mom a headache or a heart attack! LOL! I agree though – you need some photos and maybe a plant?

  6. Do you at least have a colorful screen-saver? That isn’t against the rules, is it?

  7. Thanks for the workday tour. I’ve tried working paperlessly and just can’t do it; some things are just so much easier for me in hardcopy.

  8. Ricky – my workspace gives ME a headache! LOL

Ellen, I think things are easier with paper too. But I’m getting the hang of it.

PJ – no screen saver…just lots of work screens. 🙂

I agree I need something in there, but they move you around so much, the more stuff you have the harder it is to pick up and move to new beige cube….

  9. There is this to be said for working, and especially for working in beige cubicles: the weekends look so much better!
