Why two won't work

Maisie’s sister is for sale.  She’d be about 2 years old,  and I’m sure she’s a beautiful tri- sheltie.  I’d love to have her.  But this morning, in the early gray light of pre-dawn I recognized why having two shelties won’t work for us.

The one sheltie-girl we have had to go out at 6:30 this morning.  She doesn’t know that it’s Saturday.  Or that Mama had a really long week.  She just knows that she goes outside at 6:30 every morning.  If not earlier.  So I drag myself out of bed, bundle up in layers while she hops impatiently around my feet.  Out we go into the dark.  Up and down the path her Dad shoveled for her.  Up and down the path again.  Have to smell everything.  Trying to find a really good spot.

Apparently there were no good spots, and after 15 minutes she turned and trotted purposefully toward the house.  I went back to bed.  At 7:00 she had to go out.  I told her to “GO LIE DOWN!”  She did for a minute, then she was back.  She had to go! I told her to GO LIE DOWN!!! She burrowed under the blanket, down to my feet and nipped my toes.

I dragged myself out of bed, put on the layers.  We went out.  Walked up and down the path.  A lot.  I sang to her “Find a spot…find a spot.  Katie go bathroom.”  My ears were freezing.  So was my nose.  We left the path and slogged through the snow, out to the road, sniffed the mailbox and then trotted briskly back up the driveway.  She skidded around the corner into her path and we raced to the end of it.  I was excited; surely now we’d get some action?  She stood at the end of the path and looked at me.  Then she trotted for the front door.  I went back to bed.

Twenty minutes later she knocks me up the side of my head with her paw.  She wants to go out.  I didn’t even try to tell her to lie down.  I dragged myself out of bed, added the layers..we went out.  Read above paragraphs for the routine.  We ended up back inside with no business being done.

I thought to myself.  If there were TWO shelties I’d get to do all this times two.  No way am I up for that.  So we’ll try to find Maisie’s sister a good home, somewhere she’ll be spoiled rotten, in a warmer climate maybe, or someone with a fenced yard so going out isn’t such an ordeal.

Cause this Mama is already tired.  And it’s going to be a long winter.

I'm a long time banker having worked in banks since the age of 17. I took a break when I turned 50 and went back to school. I graduated right when the economy took a turn for the worst and after a year of library work found myself unemployed. I was lucky that my previous bank employer wanted me back. So here I am again, a long time banker. Change is hard.

  1. oh dear.. I shouldn’t laugh…
Have you ever thought of just getting a long line and a stake and leaving her out there?

  3. Yep, what Sara said! LOL! Is there just no way you can fence in your yard? That would solve so many problems!

  4. You think?! LOL. The rules of the sub say no fence…though I know of at least one other family that wishes we could. There’s no home owners association per se… I’m not sure who would do what if we actually did fence it in..

  5. Uh-oh! My Nikki used to pull that nonsense. Sarah doesn’t, but that’s not because we figured it out. Frustrating, isn’t it? Good thing she’s so CUTE!

  6. Speaking from recent experience two is definitely more work than one! In some ways. For us the pottying actually got easier since they both run and have synchronized pottying.LOL Magnus thinks I am torturing him to make him potty in the cold and snow, but Maizey loves it so she runs straight out and goes- apparently that makes Magnus feel like he is missing the fun so he follows her.:)) Such silly puppies.

On the other hand their are numerous. . . numerous things that are more complicated. LOL

It so nice you will consider taking her, but I always respect people who know whats best for them and their current pets. I’m sure you can find a good home for her. . . who knows it may be yours!LOL Just kidding, but I bet you were tempted!

One more thing in this marathon post-fences are life savers. But what about an x-pen set up. something smaller that could be just for pottying? Just a thought. Stay warm out there!:))

  7. Poor you!! I know how frustrating it is when we take them out to potty and they just decide NOT to! I think girls have a harder time finding a potty place than boys do!!!

  8. Oh man! I don’t envy you the early mornings, and I really don’t envy you not having the ability to put up a fence. My fence is an absolute life-saver. If I had to take my dogs out of leash every time I went outside with them, that would drive me crazy!

  9. Haha! I’m laughing only because Kona’s on a new “scratch on my crate at 3am” routine, so I feel your pain! I normally don’t have a list of things I’ve done by 5:30am, but I do today! Nothing like a furry alarm clock =)

  10. Oh yeah, those furry alarm clocks. Not always so appreciated, like today when I didn’t go to sleep until after 3:00 am (because Kat’s plane was very very late) and they were getting frisky at 6:30. Although they didn’t force me out of bed until 7. When we just had one, I always went out with her. Now that we have two, we open the door and scoot them out. We have no fence, but we know our neighbors so if they go say good morning it’s not a big deal. I do remember the potty training days with Bailey though, in January. In the wee hours. In the cold.

  12. Miley is an early riser but none of the other dogs are. Plus, the dogs play with each other and wear each other out. To bad you cant have a doggie door. Diana

  13. What about an electronic fence? I know how you feel, Reilly woke me up a 3.00am this morning wanting to go out, but luckily for me, we do have a fence – he’s just lucky I remembered to let him back in !!!!

  14. I ditto those who say find a way for her to be out there by herself. I suggest a rope tied to something next to the house so you can grab the clip without going outside, attach it to her collar, send her out, and wait inside while reading the paper or something. Then, instead of getting back into bed with you whenever she wakes you up, it’s into the crate. You can have it in the room with you, but not back on the bed! I’ve had to deal with this with Boost. Good luck.

  15. Grammar sloppiness! “You can have it [the crate] in the room with you, but [katie must not get] back on the bed!”

  16. Dawn, Dawn, Dawn…..I so totally don’t envy your mornings! We both do the layers, as you mentioned in my blog, but at least Trudy knows why she’s out there and does it pretty quickly…at least the peeing part. Sometimes I have to go around the “parklike setting” of our condo’s central area for everything else but it’s not too bad….seein’ as how we’ve only had about 3 inches of snow….so far .
