Change Is Hard

…but change is certain.

Seeing grass

Yesterday we had a heat wave…temps in the 40’s and lots of rain.  Even thunder.  As the snow melted I tried to convince myself the rain smelled like spring, but it didn’t work.  Somewhere in my mind the truth lurks…that we have weeks and weeks, months even, of winter still ahead of us.

But today, with the backyard bare and the grass still faintly green, Katie and I went out to play.  Twice.  It was soooooo cold, with temperatures in the teens and the wind blowing, that each of our play times was short.  But Katie needed to run, and I needed some fresh air.

We explored the yard the first time.  I asked her to sit for me in front of one of our backyard Christmas trees…she did, but she was much more interested in those noises from the woods where all the rabbits and squirrels and pesky deer lurk.  So we investigated, and though we never actually saw anything interesting…there were plenty of good things to sniff.

Later in the afternoon, with tiny little snowflakes gently floating we went out again, this time to chase the frisbee.  She loves her frisbee.

We didn’t stay out long because it was freezing, but we had a good time running around the yard.  Apparently catching a frozen frisbee isn’t that comfortable so she mostly let it land, then picked it up and brought it back.  Or not, depending on her mood.  Sometimes she waited for me to walk over and get it, then she’d get all excited to chase it again.  I guess it’s all about the chase, not so much about bringing it back to her Mama.  Silly girl.

And so the first weekend of the year passed peacefully, quietly, with plenty of naps and a few spurts of activity.  All good as Katie and I get ready to start the next week.

Next weekend maybe we’ll explore a bit further than the yard.  This weekend we had all we needed right here at home.

I'm a long time banker having worked in banks since the age of 17. I took a break when I turned 50 and went back to school. I graduated right when the economy took a turn for the worst and after a year of library work found myself unemployed. I was lucky that my previous bank employer wanted me back. So here I am again, a long time banker. Change is hard.

  1. I’m in love with your header photo of Katie! She has the sweetest face, even more so, dotted with snow.

Going to work will be tough after all this down time, but I think we all needed to refresh ourselves. Perhaps our dogs benefitted the most.

  3. Isn’t it fantastic to finally see grass again after such a long time with dirty snow? I totally had Spring fever on Friday (way too early, I know)!

  4. That new header IS wonderful! (I showed it to David, who loved it, too.) Katie is such a pretty girl and looks beautiful sitting by the tree. Here, too, it was a bitterly cold day, but Sarah and I got out for a long, cross-country ramble, and David and I noted that there was still light in the sky at 5:30. Plenty of winter to come, but the days are getting longer!

  6. I’d like to believe that your comment that we only have weeks of winter left is true. We’re below zero here right now. I’m sure that we have MONTHS of winter still ahead of us.

It was great to see you and Katie out exploring and playing with the frisbee and taking advantage of the milder weather.

  7. It’s been quite a bit warmer around here in Virginia the past few days–on Saturday it was in the low 60s, and the snow is almost gone. I envy you being able to play with Katie and toys. Trudy has very little interest in toys, and the few she likes the most are the 2-3 she brought with her when I adopted her. I don’t remember now if those came from her former home or if her foster mom sent them with us because they were the only ones Trudy was attracted to during her 2 weeks with them. And there are only so many games you can play that involve food, if she’s going to keep her girlish figure!

I agree with the others, the header photo of Katie with snow on her face is adorable!

  8. How lucky are you to still have a tinge of green in the grass – ours has been brown for weeks – but at least we haven’t had any snow:) Katie looks as pretty as usual.

  9. Love the header photo! Katie looks so alert. I think our grass might have some green yet, or it did when the snow got rained off a week or so ago. Right now it’s covered in snow again, and I find myself already thinking about spring. Winter started too early this year, so it seems cabin fever is going to start early too.

  10. Such a face! Miss Sadie said so too, and she gets to look at the Cowboy all the time. I think the best reason to keep dogs is that we all need play therapy now and then. Mostly now. I think the best reason to keep cats is to keep the dogs in line.
