For those of you with Shelties….Katie has been wondering what kind of food you’re feeding them, how much..and especially WHEN. She gets a cup of her dry food about 12:30 in the afternoon…and she thinks it’s not nearly enough. She is especially upset not to have anything first thing in the morning and just begs and begs.
So she’d like to know…is she being starved to death by an evil set of parents? And how much should a 15″ (or so) Sheltie girl weigh anyway?

My dogs get 2 meals a day – one when they first wake up, one at dinnertime.
Oreo is about 15 inches, and he weighed in at 18 pounds the other day, and I think he is at a perfect weight. Misty is longer than him and about an inch taller, I’d like her to be about 26 pounds (she’s a bit underweight at 24 right now).

Ricky gets two meals a day too – he is 14″ and is usually 15lb but weighed in at 17! the other day (winter weight gain?). I feed him grain-free kibble – 1/4 of a cup in the early morning and 1/4 cup in the evening with about a heaping teaspoon of pumpkin each meal. He would go on strike if he didn’t get food first thing in the morning! LOL!

Eva gets two meals a day, one in the morning when she gets up and one in the evening.
She has Royal Canin medium adult and she loves it. Well, she loves foods! It’s 90 grams per day for two meals which means 45 grams per meal.
She is about 14 ” and slightly less than 16 pounds. We only give her dry foods and some treats in the day for doing tricks or some other works.
However, she always looks she is starving and she gobbles down her food everytime she eats.

Reilly has a food called “Taste of the Wild” only available at the Tractor Supply Store. It is an all natural Bison and Venison food with fruits and vegetables. It was one of the few foods that got a five star rating on dogfood.com. He also gets fed twice a day, 1/2 cup morning and night. (I also mix his food with a little water) I also give him a charcoal cookie at lunch time to help keep his stomach settled. Technically, one feeding a day is okay, but it is a long time for any dog to go between meals – I think the two meals is a better option.

I think Katie has secretly paid you all…but I agree, she needs something when we get up.

But PS…I tried to measure her this morning, had her stand stay against my leg, marked her shoulder height with my finger, then measured my leg (as she’s afraid of the tape measure)…and I think she’s between 15 and 16 inches…and she weighs 21 pounds! Can’t tell with all the fur but I’m wondering if she’s overweight. I think I need to find a sheltie weight/height chart.

We don’t have a Sheltie (we have a golden retriever) but he is fed twice a day, too. We use Flint River Ranch food (ordered online) and LOVE it! Well, our dog loves it. I like the quality and the price and……….(sorry to gross anyone out) the size of his poops. It’s a high quality grade dog food and very digestible, with minimal filler. Thus, smaller poop.

Guiness is 16 inches and weighs 21lbs. He gets 1/2 a cup twice a day. In the morning and evening. I feed “Fromm” chicken. Miley is a little over 13 inches and weighs 14 lbs. and gets 1/4 a cup twice a day. I hope that helps Katie. LOL

Chloe is a smaller sheltie, 13″ and about 18 lbs, but tends to put on weight, and she KNOWS she does not get enough to eat ;-). I feed raw, and need to make the morning meal half veggies, half ground chicken wings, and then she eats pieces of chicken at night. She only gets like a quarter of a cup in the morning, and then a small piece of chicken at night with no skin, and not many training treats, and when she does get treats it is usually kibble. When she does eat kibble we have been feeding the no grain stuff from Costco, or something like Evo, and she gets a quarter cup in the morning and a quarter cup in the evening, and it is gone before the bowl hits the ground, but it is keeping her at a nice weight.
Skyler my tri boy is a bigger guy -I would guess he is 17 in and and weights 30 lbs,he is at a good weight now that he is on thyroid meds, we could not get weight off himm but then found he has thyroid which is commong in shelties, anyway, he eats just shy of 1/2 cup twice a day.

ps, I always vary my feeding time anytime between 7 am and 11:30 in the morning and the evening meal is anytime between 5 and 9 pm, I am just bad sometimes with schedules but i think varying it keeps them from getting too upset when they expect it all to be at an exact time, they know it will get there eventually, they get excited when they see food prep but never look for a certain time

Ok, you all are going to think my guys are moose’s. DeBoy’s are 16 1/2″ — Tytus weighs in at 32 lbs and Brutus weighs in at 36 lbs. They eat twice a day (5-6 am and 5-6 pm); each meal consist of 1/4 cup of dry kibble by Orijen (fish formula), 1/8 cup Sojo’s Dried Veggies with water, Tablespoon of Tomato Paste.

Not a Sheltie, but I know lots of people who use TOTW (which Reilly suggested) with great success. I gave it to Marge on occasion.
Marge only gets about 1 3/4 cups of kibble a day (since we train so often, she gets a lot of calories from her treats), and also gets a joint health supplement.

Mine get two meals a day. About a 1/4 cup per feeding. Dare and Zoe are about 15 in. and weigh in from 15-17 lbs. Twist is 15 1/2 in. and weighs closer to 18. Raven gets a little less, she’s about 14 in. and about 13 lbs.

Trudy also gets fed twice a day, 1/3 or 1/4 cup, I can’t remember which right now, and if I went to the kitchen to open her food bin at 2:30 AM….well, you know what kinds of things happen when they hear those sounds. Anyway, I’m trying to keep her under 20 pounds as the arthritis in her left front leg can flare up if she weighs much more than that. She is currently on Wellness for seniors. I also try to keep baby carrots around and give her 2-3 of those with each meal. I also feed her 2 chicken strips/day that have glucosamine & condroitin, again to help with her arthritis.

This has all been very helpful! Katie is over in the kitchen, barking at me RIGHT NOW! And it’s 6:00 a.m. ! She’s saying “I TOLD YOU SO MOM!”
