Change Is Hard

…but change is certain.

Walking with random thoughts

Do any of you remember pine cone wreaths?  OK – that probably dated me, but I remember my Mom making pine cone wreaths in the 70’s.

You took a bunch of pine cones and glued them to a wire wreath, then sprayed them with something to seal them.  They were actually pretty.

Every day at work I try to get out at lunch for a walk around the neighborhood; it’s the best part of my day.  Lately I’ve noticed a lot of pine cones under trees along the way and they make me smile, because back in the day the hardest thing about making a pine cone wreath was finding the pine cones.  So seeing them all there, ready for the picking, makes me think of Mom.  She would have been excited to find so many.

On my walk the other day I saw a beautiful climbing rose hanging over someone’s backyard fence.

I thought how interesting it was that the prettiest part of the plant was where the owner wouldn’t see it.  That sometimes the best stuff is just out of sight and takes a little work to enjoy.

Isn’t that the way most best stuff usually turns out to be?

I'm a long time banker having worked in banks since the age of 17. I took a break when I turned 50 and went back to school. I graduated right when the economy took a turn for the worst and after a year of library work found myself unemployed. I was lucky that my previous bank employer wanted me back. So here I am again, a long time banker. Change is hard.

  1. As always your pictures are wonderful. I do remember pine cones wreaths and in fact made one last winter. I was feeling crafty and had a few pine cones.

My mom has a climbing rose bush and I just love it…the colors are so vibrant.

  2. Chuckles – I still collect pine cones – I just love them – except with one exception. A few years ago I worked over Christmas at a well known bed bath store and they had those cinnamon pine cones in a box right next to my register. I came to hate that smell and I would come home and my clothes and hair would smell of it too. It still makes me cringe at Christmas time when I smell those. But yes I agree the prettiest things are often out out sight of most people.

  3. Pine cone wreaths make me think of my days as a girl scout.

Chewy is a big fan of pine cones (and if I recall, puppy Oreo was too).

  5. We don’t get pine cones here as it’s too hot for pine trees. However, we can find some in our apartment which is on a hill and Eva loves them.

  6. If you want to make a wreath, let me know – we have an over-abundance of pine cones every year, and I’d be happy to ship them to you! A wonderful, rejuvenating way to spend a lunch break!

  7. That is so true about the best stuff taking some work to enjoy, but I guess we do because it is worth it!

  8. Lots of coincidences this week in the blogosphere–at least, I see it in the corners I visit regularly. You and Gerry with the random digressions, Kathy and Peter with thoughts on rejection and acceptance.

I love those simple, old-fashioned, nearly wild roses. They remind me of my first float down the Paw Paw River one June, when the banks were spilling over with roses.

  10. Dog Dad remembers pine cone wreaths. Dog Dad has a couble of pinecones he picked up when he was in California and they are huge about 5 inches long. I imagine a pinecone wreath with one of those would be heavy. BOL
