Today on my lunch time walk I saw a walking stick! The insect. I don’t think I’ve ever seen one in real life before, though I remember reading about them as a kid. I almost stepped on it, and as I passed over it I suddenly realized the little twig had legs and was moving!
I turned around and watched it. It went stone still after it crawled into the grass. I touched it and it didn’t move. I guess that is it’s security, blending in with the landscape.
Anyway it was really cool. The video clip embedded above is of someone else with one…this is exactly like the one I saw. I’ve just read that there are actually many different kinds. Have any of you seen these in your parts of the country?

That is very cool – my husband loves taking photos of insects and he would’ve been thrilled with that!

Dawn, here is my walking stick story. I was in Paris, strolling through the little zoo adjacent to the Jardin des Plantes, One of the buildings had exhibits of very small animals, insects and the like. Naturally, all of the identifying signs were in French. The insects were in large, glass-fronted, aquarium-like exhibit spaces, and I almost walked right by the walking sticks, thinking that that particular exhibit was empty. Then I took a second look at what I’d taken to be bare branches, and there they were! Wonderful and extraordinary, these ordinary creatures!

This was one of those “where the heck is my camera” instances, I suspect. I have this notion I’ve seen one in my lifetime, but I could not tell you where or when. They are incredible little creatures for sure.

Can’t figure out how they fit all their internal organs in that tiny space…like heart and lungs and stuff…

You are so lucky. I am not sure if I’ve ever seen a walking stick. Maybe once, but I can’t pull up a memory, so it probably doesn’t count. Like the way they have twig legs and blend in so well with their homes.
