Overwhelming stress…or the story of the jello failure

Have you ever had an hour or a day or a week when you need to do too many things?  When you should work with multiple lists to remind you of tasks to be done?  But because you’re too stressed to make the lists you muddle along doing the best you can?  Sometimes things don’t turn out so well.

You know what jello is, right?  That wiggly insanely colored not food thing.  I was supposed to make it last night before I went to bed.  I promised to make it last night before I went to bed.  But I went to bed without thinking about jello.  The neon food never entered my mind.

Even this morning as I was getting ready for work I didn’t think about my promise.  Until I pulled the cereal box out of the pantry.  And there it was.  The little box staring accusingly up at me.  The box of jello dust.  Waiting for the boiling water.  Waiting for me to fulfill the promise.

I put breakfast on hold and set the kettle on the stove.  Water takes a long time to boil when you’re in a hurry but I didn’t use that time to read the directions.  That would have entailed finding my glasses, and after all this was jello.  Who needs directions?

So I boiled the water, poured out one cup of the steaming liquid and stirred it into the jello fixings until it was clear.  I knew that the little box made four servings, so I poured it into four little custard cups, each cup not even half full.  Hmmmm, I thought.  That’s odd.  I remember the servings being bigger than this when I was a kid.  But when was the last time I actually made jello and poured it into little cups?  So I put them in the refrigerator and set about making my breakfast.

But something kept nudging my brain.  How is it that a small box of jello is supposed to make four 1/2 cup servings and what I had looked like so much less?  How come.  How come.

WAIT!  Where was that box?  Where were my glasses?

The directions say one cup of boiling water….and one cup of COLD water!  AHHHHHH  I could double my output if I followed the directions!  Isn’t that just like life.

I grabbed the four pathetic custard cups of jello out of the fridge, poured them back into the bowl, added the cold water, stirred.   And I laughed quietly, assuring myself that I’d never tell anyone about my failed jello project.  But I’m telling you.

Keep it under your hat, OK?

Don’t let the stress make you crazy!

I'm a long time banker having worked in banks since the age of 17. I took a break when I turned 50 and went back to school. I graduated right when the economy took a turn for the worst and after a year of library work found myself unemployed. I was lucky that my previous bank employer wanted me back. So here I am again, a long time banker. Change is hard.

  1. Keep it under our hats? That would make for a sticky, slimy mess for all of us!
If its any consolation, I’ve messed up Jell-o, too. If you don’t stir it adequately before adding the cold water, you end up with disgusting rubber stuff.

  4. Oh, the stress is everywhere, isn’t it?

I never like making jello because I always turn it into something else and don’t ask me why. I just can’t do a good job when it comes to jello making : )

Hope your jello turns out ok!

  5. It’s 6 am. And Mommy is in the mood to eat jello now! Someone once told her, if you add Gingerale to the jello mixture — it will make little bubbles in the jello when it thickens in the refrigerator. Mommy wonders if it works? Mommy says this was a fabulous post!!! Mommy says she is kinda like Jello — (since she is a bit overweight) she jiggles when she wiggles too!!!

  6. Gingerale? Hmmmm. Seems like that would work. Will try it next time I make jello, but it’s possible that could be years from now…

  7. Totally something I would do!

I’ve been looking for a container of treats for two weeks. I know I filled up the container and put it somewhere. I looked in all the usual places, and then started checking closets, the fridge, and any other random place. Nothing!

Thursday, Jeff texts me a photo while I’m at work. He found the treats. They were in a big cardboard box, in the garage! It looked like I had packaged them up to mail them to China.

Clearly, my brain is muddled with all the stress of to do lists as I head back to school.

Good to laugh about it all!

  8. Been there done it way to many times – I blame it on my eye sight which has deteriorated way to fast over the last two years and the fact I can’t see at all without my glasses – heck I even keep a magnify glass in the kitchen now so I can read the instructions (being prone to forgetting where the heck I have left my glasses) I hate to say it – but growing older is the pits!

  10. There is absolutely no food in this world that I haven’t been able to mess up – I have that special talent. I blame the strength of my forgetter and the weakness of my rememberer to the fact that I have learned so much over the years my hard drive is full – and needs defragging too. I love how you turned your near-almost-disaster into a blog post that brought chuckles!

  12. You’ve got me wondering now, just who did you promise to make jello for? Next time add cold vodka to the jello, lol!!

  13. Well Karma, a certain someone in my household was having something done medically and could only eat clear things. Like broth and jello. Yum.

  14. Ah, this would have been the day before we left for vacation, the day I stayed home to clean house, catch up on all the laundry, pack for the trip, AND MAKE BLACKBERRY JAM! Trying to do everything at once, way too fast, impatient with the long, folded direction sheet for the jam–because I didn’t really need all that information, did I? Oh, but then, halfway through, I realized I’d been reading the directions for FREEZER jam when what I was making–or trying to make–was COOKED jam. “Are you taking some with us to give as gifts?” my husband asked innocently. Hardly! I’d changed directions in midstream and didn’t know if the darn stuff would set! It did. But next time I am going to write out the directions myself on a separate piece of paper so I won’t be turning the printed sheet over and over and getting lost. Jello? Oh, yeah, I can believe it!
