Last look at Christmas

Main street lit up

Want to see a last little bit of holiday cheer?  Well come along with me as we visit Rochester Michigan, a small town that puts on a show you won’t want to miss.

Santa's on the roof!

Santa’s on the roof!

We visited Saturday night, an almost balmy evening which brought out the crowds and added to the festive feeling.

Doesn't the purple building look like it's smiling?

Doesn’t the purple building look like it’s smiling?

We walked up one side of the two long city blocks and then down the other side.

Street of color.

Street of color.

The shop windows were decorated for the holidays and each building glowed in a different color.

Window shopping.

Window shopping.

All the restaurants and coffee shops were full of happy people enjoying friends and family, good conversation, good food and good feelings.

Massive color.

Massive color.

It was magical.  Everywhere you looked people were smiling.  Little kids were giggling.  So were grownups.  No one was in a hurry.

Shades of fun.

Shades of fun.

Millions of lights were making lots of people happy.  Maybe we should do something similar in the summer.

Holiday sparkles.

Holiday sparkles.

Who says lights have to be confined to December?

Green light for fun.

Green light for fun.

I'm a long time banker having worked in banks since the age of 17. I took a break when I turned 50 and went back to school. I graduated right when the economy took a turn for the worst and after a year of library work found myself unemployed. I was lucky that my previous bank employer wanted me back. So here I am again, a long time banker. Change is hard.

  1. Wow! Beautiful, but all I can think is how much work it would be to take these lights down. I guess there’s a bit of scrooge lingering in my soul. I do remember when I would spend hours decorating the house and more hours decorating packages. In my youth.

    • Husband’s nephew was here for lunch today. He worked in the town where all these lights are. He says the town takes a truck out afterward and just cut the lights off at the roof and throw them away! ! !

  3. How pretty. The buildings are so festive. I keep Christmas lights in my kitchen window all year long—On grey days they are very cheerful–even in the summer. Thanks for sharing your Merry.

  4. That’s so pretty! I love the lights. Some muslims in my neighbourhood always keep some lights on outside of their house and it always give out some festive feeling to others.

  5. That’s so cool! What a great idea to make it a streetwide thing.

Vegas keeps their light up all year, why not everyone else? This reminds me of the freemont street light show in old town las vegas

    • Thanks, we had a lot of fun. The little camera we had with us has a setting to do ‘magic’ and one of those is ‘sparkle’ which is what husband used on that shot. I liked it because the sparkle covers up my little surgery scar on my forehead that is still healing!

  8. I LOVE the way those buildings are decked out in different colors! Yes, Christmas lights are festive and somehow manage to hold back the darkness and dreariness of long winter days. We keep Christmas lights on one of our artificial ficus trees year-round!

    • I know. I wonder who’s funding it. Have to say it was bringing in a lot of people the Sat night we were there, so the restaurants and bars and coffee shops were full, might be a break even sort of expense.
