I made my mom’s hamburger cabbage soup this week.

I happened on the directions in my recipe box while I was looking for something else.

It’s quick and easy…

….and it reminds me of mom.

Which makes me smile.

I'm a long time banker having worked in banks since the age of 17. I took a break when I turned 50 and went back to school. I graduated right when the economy took a turn for the worst and after a year of library work found myself unemployed. I was lucky that my previous bank employer wanted me back. So here I am again, a long time banker. Change is hard.

Yes, I love that it’s her recipe. It’s in my writing, I have other recipes of hers that she wrote out. Those are really precious.

I have a notebook of a bunch of my mother’s recipes that she dictated to me when I moved out. She’s not a big writer of anything so if I were to have anything, it would be precious – not that she’s not still with us but you know…

It looks delicious. I make rasam powder, the recipe was passed on to my mother from my favourite relative, my father’s elder brother’s wife. I always remember her when I see the bottle with the powder.

What is rasam powder? I love when things remind us of our relatives!

It is a powder made by roasting spices , we use them in certain curries.

Lots of reasons to smile. Soup is a staple in our house, and our slow cooker gets a workout every week.

I like to always have some soup in the fridge, especially over the winter. I don’t always get it done, but I try!

This looks a bit like the soup my mom used to make — minus the cabbage! Delicious! I love hot soup in the wintertime.

The original recipe said to use 1/2 lb to 1 lb of hamburger. I can just see my mom making a whole meal for the 6 of us with 1/2 a pound of hamburger.

Would you mind sharing your Mom’s recipe? Is it similar to cabbage rolls? The soup sounds delicious and very satisfying on a cold day. i have a few of my Gram’s special recipes that she wrote out on plain index cards. Most have little stains on them, a bit of kitchen patina.
My wish for snow was granted this week! Had a very pretty snow that amounted to just under an inch. It made my day – and the birds enjoyed it, too!

Mom’s Cabbage Soup
Ingredients:
1 lb ground beef
1 large onion
5-7 C liquid (broth or water)
1 large can tomatoes not drained (but I used 14.5 oz can, it was fine)
1 can tomato soup, not diluted
1 can tomato sauce (optional, 8 oz, I used)
3 carrots peeled and cliced or chopped
1/4 head of cabbage chopped
1/4 C frozen corn
1/4 C frozen peas
Brown hamburger and onion, drain off grease
Add in 5-7 C water or broth (I used one box (4 C) beef broth and 1 C water. Have also made it with 50/50 split chicken broth and water)
Throw in the carrots, tomatoes, tomato soup and tomato sauce. Simmer until carrots are almost tender.
Add the chopped cabbage, simmer for 15-20 minutes more or until cabbage is tender.
At last moment throw in the peas and corn. I just turned it off at that point and let them all sit for a bit. But you could simmer for some more too.
It’s pretty forgiving, the carrots and cabbage could probably go in at the same time…but I don’t like soggy cabbage…you could probably throw in the carrots when you’re browning the hamburger and onions. You can use water or whatever broth you have. I use lower sodium broth, there’s enough sodium in the tomatoes and tomato soup.
Enjoy!
