Change Is Hard

Learning to puppy

It’s been a long, long time since we lived with a puppy. Some thing had to be relearned immediately. Some things are lifestyle changes that we can grow into even as she grows.

When you have a new puppy you have to look in all directions before you move your feet. She could be anywhere and most of the time she’s behind your feet, between your feet, next to your feet or chewing your feet.

When you have a new puppy you must never ignore sounds no matter how faint. She’s almost always doing something and sounds are your first hint of it all going wrong.

Tearing sounds, gnawing sounds, throw up sounds, peeing sounds, the sounds of toenails racing in places she shouldn’t be, clanging sounds of food bowls being overturned, the sounds of shoes being dropped in other rooms…the possibilities are endless.

When you have a new puppy you must give up cleaning, unless it’s cleaning up poo or pee. There’s no time to do anything but follow your adorable little puppy around, ensuring there’s less poo and pee to clean.

When you have a new puppy you give up your luxurious long morning snoozes. Little puppies have little bladders and need to go OUTSIDE RIGHT NOW! It’s OK, because being an older new puppy parent you probably need to GO RIGHT NOW too. Hopefully not outside though.

And speaking of snoozes, when you have a new puppy you learn to nap when she naps. Which, if you’re perfectly honest, is quite often. And you’re probably sleepy (see early morning observations above) so take that nap!

When you have a new puppy your vocabulary is reduced to “Awwwww” and “NO!”

When you have a new puppy you must remember she’s not the dog you had before and will probably react differently to things like opening the oven door or blowing your nose or using tinfoil. Or she might react exactly the same, crazy way.

When you have a new puppy you have to learn to manage the leash with a twirling, dancing whirlwind on the other end.

When you have a new puppy you spend more time down on the floor than you have in years, playing ball, tossing chicken toys, tickling tummies, and laughing.

When you have a new puppy you need to stop wearing earrings because little squirming puppy kisses turn to chewing on hair, noses, chins and ears. And earrings are irresistible.

When you have a new puppy that has fallen into a happy, exhausted puddle of puppy nap right in the middle of the living room floor, you tiptoe around her and settle in a nearby chair to watch her sleep.

Because she’s so cute. And because everyone knows to let a sleeping dog lie.

Happy 3 month birthday, little Penny. Welcome home sweetheart.

I'm a long time banker having worked in banks since the age of 17. I took a break when I turned 50 and went back to school. I graduated right when the economy took a turn for the worst and after a year of library work found myself unemployed. I was lucky that my previous bank employer wanted me back. So here I am again, a long time banker. Change is hard.

  1. A new puppy is a big-time commitment but so worth the effort once all that pee and poo situation is resolved.
    Penny is absolutely adorable!

  6. This post sure made me smile. Having a puppy is a lot like having a toddler. Adorable but lots of work. But so rewarding. Sounds like you have got it nailed. To borrow from a cooking show: Ready, steady, get your puppy on!

    • I think we’re getting it down. Time for her to go to puppy school after we get her last shots at the end of the month. She’s learning some things here, but we’ll all be more consistent if she gets to go to school.

  7. So very much energy – so very much cuteness – so very much exhaustion. She has already proven to be very photogenic, and I love the photos where no foot is on the ground. She’s sleeping now? Quick, grab a few moments of quiet sitting, maybe even napping.

  9. to be honest, I don’t miss those puppy days one bit! Walking up and down a flight of 12 stairs in our building a few times every hour was crazy!!! We didn’t have the luxury of being able to open a door and just go outside with Levi lol. I think Penny is going to keep you on your toes for sure!

    • I get that. Luckily we only have a couple steps down from the porch or deck to the yard. Still, at the beginning we were going outside every 15-20 minutes. That was a lot and we were lucky the weather was pretty good then. During the ice storm and then the snow storm it was more like once an hour…much better. Now it’s only after she eats, when she gets up from a nap and when she asks. She’s soooo good.

  10. All so true…as I recently recall! She is soooo precious!
My Star Light puppy is a bit over a year now, but she loves being ‘the baby’, so as far as I’m concerned, she can always be the baby. Star Baby! Just celebrating ‘gotcha day’, when Blue and I went to pick her up, by looking and laughing at pictures and videos.
I know you are taking lots of those! Worth more than gold!

    • I want her to stay this little forever. But I know she’ll be a pretty girl when she grows up too. Happy birthday to your baby-girl Star. Yep, I have lots and lots of pictures and it’s only been 3 weeks!

  12. All so true, and well worth all of the angst of parenting—-in a couple of years. LOL. She’s so adorable, makes me want to bring one home. But I can’t do that to Marlee in her last days, so I will soak up all of Penny’s shenanigans.

  13. Penny is absolutely adorable. Too bad you don’t live closer. Penny would make an adorable playmate for Deb (the widow badass)’s granddog, Bowser. Both pups have the cute-factor going on in spades! ❤

    • Yes, I’m pleased that the breeder kept one of Penny’s sisters, and she lives less than 30 minutes away. We hope to get them together once in awhile to play. Penny got to visit a couple weeks ago (about 1 week after we got her) when we had an all day thing we had to go to, and the breeder was gracious enough to dog sit her. She said Penny and her sister played all day.

    • We can already see some differences, and all in 3 weeks! She’s 10 pounds now…was 6.9 when we got her. Her legs are getting long, and I swear her feet are the same size Katie’s were as an adult dog. She’s going to be bigger than Katie, but at the moment she reminds me so much of my girl when she was a pup. I want her to stay this size forever.

  16. Earring chewing must be a girl-thing — Monkey hasn’t tried that yet. But your post here made me smile big time! I well remember having to clean up all the poo and pee, trying to get him to nap so I could work, watching him learn about his world. In fact, at just two, he’s still learning — only he’s better trained, ha! Miss Penny is just adorable. No, she’ll never be Katie or any of your others, but she’s bringing smiles and joy all around … and that’s a very good thing!

    • She is definitely her own dog. She reminds me of Katie quite a bit, but she has her own spin on things. (and spin and spin and spin…she’s a sheltie after all). She’s so interested in everything. She saw her first tractor yesterday, clearing the neighbor’s drive of the 10 inches of snow we got. She saw her first snowmobile too. She’s interested but doesn’t get crazy. Haven’t seen her bark at anything like that yet. She watches squirrels like she’s trying to figure them out. I feel sad when she barks at her reflection in the slider, wanting the other puppy to play. I know she misses her sisters.

  17. Happy 3 month birthday Penny! 💕🐾

All of that upfront work pays off, as we know! Penny is thriving – she looks a little bigger, maybe her legs are a little longer, too. Especially in the photo where she is pouncing on her bed in front of the fireplace. 😊

I have come across someone whose heart is broken. Her dog passed away recently and I think that she will find comfort here. I will contact her through Instagram and give her your information. Her name is Marilyn. I will be back to read about Penny.. ps you can call me Bobbie, if you would like.Thank you!
