This week I’ve been ‘camping’ in the back yard. We haven’t had rain for a long time and none is predicted for a long time into the future. So I’ve been sleeping in the tent without the rain fly.
The first night, a cool breeze touching my face and tucked under my blankets, I was looking up trying to see the few stars that shine in my light polluted neighborhood when I noticed a flash, almost out of my line of vision. I stared in that direction for several seconds but didn’t see anything, so I returned to my search for stars.

The flash happened again, higher but still almost beyond the open space above the tent. I stared some more. Nothing.
And then it happened. TWO lights blinked, right above the tent and I realized the lightening bugs had arrived for the summer! I couldn’t contain my smile. Lightening bugs, stars and a cool late night summer breeze. A perfect summer night in Michigan.
I have no pictures, but I’m sure if you close your eyes you can imagine it all for yourself. And I’m thinking you’ll smile too.

Oh! I remember lightening bugs from my childhood days – we don’t get them here, but I used to love watching them, and catching them to make my own temporary lantern.

We put them in a jar with a lid that had nail holes in it. Unfortunately I don’t think any of them survived.

that’s what I did – occasionally there would be a survivor.

That’s cool. I haven’t seen them here since that first night about a week ago.

Lightening bugs–how exciting!! Not since my younger days growing up in New Jersey! I’ve not seen any down here in sunny Florida–so disappointing.

I wonder if they’re a northern phenomenon?

I have to wonder, because we had just as many trees in our NJ backyard as we have here…

I’ve never seen lightning bugs … but I’ll close my eyes and look and imagine, and I’d bet I’ll see them. 🙂

Not so brave….it was in my own backyard. Though I have to say sometimes I hear something that makes me wonder what’s out there!

Brings back sweet memories of childhood, on those warm summer Michigan nights. I never see them here in California where I live.

Interesting. I’d think they would be there. Now I wonder what their range is!

I noticed our “twinkle bugs” about three days ago! They’re out early this year, perhaps because it’s been so warm and dry? Anyway, thus far, Monk hasn’t seemed too interested in them, which surprises me. Any other time, he’d be trying to herd the poor things from one corner of the yard to another!!

None of my dogs seemed to notice them. There was one year when it seemed like we had a ton and I did research trying to figure out how to photograph them. Not as easy as you’d think. Though I did get some accidently last summer when I was shooting the Milky Way. Just on one shot.

There is nothing more telling that summer is on its way than lightening bugs! How wonderful they’ve arrived in your neck of the woods!

I have a vivid memory of catching fire flies in a jar (or attempting to)with a childhood friend. She died this past year after a long battle with cancer. Seeing fire flies will always make me think of her.
I will have to check to see if they are out tonight.

Awwww, I’m so sorry, Sara. I think I have one image I got last summer of parts of the Milky Way that has some lightening bugs in it. It was taken at Interlochen State Park in northern Michigan. If I find it I’ll send it to you.
