Change Is Hard

…but change is certain.

Official kick off of this year’s Walktober!

OK everyone, today is the official beginning of Walktober, though if you’ve gone out exploring early, we won’t argue!

But if you haven’t yet, find a place you’d like to walk, or drive, or jog, or swim, or bike, or roller-skate or hike, or canoe, or whatever and spend some time doing just that. Then write about it. It could be an essay or a poem or a run-on sentence. It can include pictures, or you can just describe it and let our imaginations run free. Alternatively you could just show us the pictures without any text if you aren’t in a writing sort of mind frame.

I seem to have missed a meal today, and I’m hungry!

You have until the end of the day October 28th to complete this adventure, though if you need a few more days just let me know. I’m flexible!

Looking for lunch in all the right places.

Help us see a part of the world we might not ever get to see without your help.

What are you looking at, lady?

Or show us around your familiar yard or neighborhood. Wherever you go, it’s all good.

Wonder what’s over here?

You could spend some time in a city…..or head out into the wilderness.

Hmmm, looks promising.

Tell us why the place you visit is special, or why you don’t think you’ll go back. It’s all part of our celebration of October!

Gotcha!

When you’re ready to post, link to this official Walktober post, and at the end of the month, probably early November, I’ll gather all the links and put them into one big post so we all can see where we all went.

Yum. My favorite.

I can’t wait to see what you decided to share with us all!

Now for desert…

Today’s photos are from a drive/walk I took at the Shiawasee Nature Preserve at the end of September. I saw so many egrets there; this series of images was just one of the hungry birds.

I like my desert rare.

I haven’t decided if that walk will be my official Walktober…I have so many other photos to share with you from that day so maybe I should use it. But I would really like to explore somewhere new. On the other hand, if time gets tight, I might just share the rest of this wonderful walk with you.

We’ll have to see how it all works out.

Burp!

Oh, and just a fyi, Penny says she’s thinking about doing her own Walktober. Since she’s only 10 months old she’ll need a little help, but so far she thinks she can do it all on her own. Silly girl.

If you have any questions about Walktober, you can email me at dawnkinster@gmail.com, or just comment here.

Ahhhhh….I feel better now.

Have fun everybody!

I'm a long time banker having worked in banks since the age of 17. I took a break when I turned 50 and went back to school. I graduated right when the economy took a turn for the worst and after a year of library work found myself unemployed. I was lucky that my previous bank employer wanted me back. So here I am again, a long time banker. Change is hard.

  2. Dawn, these could have been taken in the pond behind my house. You captured the reflections beautifully. Peaceful walk to begin my Sunday morning.

  4. Beautiful shots! I am out all the time and could post a Walktober just about every day. It will be hard to choose but I am up for the challenge!

  5. What gorgeous birds — and your comments sure give them personality! I’m still considering where I want to do my walk this year. Sadly, our leaves really haven’t turned pretty the way they usually do — most are a sickish pink-brown, yuck. But I’ll find something.

    • Some years we don’t get color by mid October either. The pictures from Shiawasee are mostly swamp maples that turn early. We have some maples, mostly on the west side of the state that are at peak but around here there’s not too much.

  6. We’ll need some extra time. We have a Sheltie meet up and walk on 29 Oct. I was going to use that for Walktober.

  7. Hi Dawn! I’ve never joined before and October is my favorite month. I always love all that you share and like you said, to see other places with the final walk with the links you’ll share at the end will be great fun. We don’t get many tree colors here in sunny CA, but I can share the pretty photos of the new barn I’ve moved my horse too. I’ll put something together to share next weekend hopefully! ❤️🐴👍

  8. I’m trying to decide on a spot myself, but I’ll find one! Our weather is (finally) so gorgeous now it will be a treat to be out, although we’re in more of a second spring than an autumn.

  9. I love this series of shots. Our egrets are not so cooperative. Looking forward to seeing where you, Penny, and everyone goes for their Walktober this year. Thank you, again, for hosting it. 🙂

Here’s mine (although I am pretty sure you got a link in a previous post, this will hopefully make it easier in terms of having it in the official spot):

    • Yes, I saw your link over at the reminder blog, so I captured it there. I’ve decided to try to write the roundup post as the links come in. We’ll see how I do with that! 🙂 Penny has already gone for a walk but being a bit of a private doggie she hasn’t divulged where it was yet. She has another walk scheduled for this weekend, so she might have an option to choose from. She’s a lucky dog. Meanwhile her mom has yet to decide what to do.

  10. Yaya! I’ll be putting mine together. I went for a walk with my friend on Saturday (the 15th!) and, while the colours are not quite where I wish they were, I’ll share them. Who knows? If I get over-enthusiastic, maybe I’ll do a second one. Thank you, Dawn, for hosting for Robin!

  11. Oh and, duh! Lovely shots of your egret. I cannot believe I have NOT been in the park where I often see them in my town this year… Have I mentioned how I am ready to retire as this work thing gets in the way of things I actually enjoy doing? 😉

    • Oh I know how that feeling feels. I worked 5 years after my official retirement, because of the financial crash of 08…and every day was agony. I hope you get to retire soon. I can attest that you are GOING TO LOVE IT!!

      • I think what happened, is, after Mick died, I was able to stay home and live off his salary for almost a year. I then worked at a golf course for six months of the year, for four seasons, meaning I spent the winter months on employment insurance. I really, REALLY started to enjoy life. No money issues and able to do what I want when I want.
        I want that back. 🙂
I KNOW I WILL! I will not be like a friend who is bored to tears. Puh-leeze…

  12. Such cool photos! I saw a white egret while on a dune tour on Chappaquiddick this summer. The tour guide was so excited that I got so excited. LOL. Kindred spirits I guess.

Fall is such a magical time.

    • We have a lot of egrets around here, so we’re not as excited about them. But they ARE pretty! Also sort of hard to photograph because they’re so white the camera usually overexposes them compared to the background.

  15. Cheers to a walk of the season! …. and thank you for stepping in to host this year. There’s a chance a beach walk will link to this. 🙂

  16. Thanks for hosting the Walktober challenge. You captured some wonderful moments of the egret doing its thing. I often wonder how they stay so white when they spend so much time in the mucky waters. The splash photo was a great capture – way to be there at the right time! Happy Walktober to you and all the participants. I linked up with some walks down memory lane. 😉

  19. Dawn – I know I learned about Walktober last year from Barbara Rodgers but I can’t remember if I learned about your site then. This time I wrote down your site and followed you so I get posts all year around because I can use a little more nature and dog pictures infused into my day and less news of the world. This is my “Walktober” post:

    “Walktober” – what a concept!

  22. Sorry, Dawn- with recent events and a sharp bang on the head I had completely missed the fact that you are doing Walktober for Robin this year. I do usually take part and can link my upcoming Monday walk, if that isn’t too late? Otherwise, I hope you’ve enjoyed doing this. I’m sure Penny has.

  23. Dawn, This Waktober challenge is wonderful. I’m unable to share a blog post in time due to my family recent event but I look forward to reading your round-up. I read Penny’s Walkober posts and she’s adorable. Give her a high 5 paw from me.
