Change Is Hard

…but change is certain.

I miss people

I went to my local lab to have blood drawn for my annual physical today. I arrived a couple minutes before my 9 am. appointment.

The lobby was empty. What used to be the window where an employee sat greeting clients was covered up. There was no sound of human life anywhere.

I received a text this morning with a link to use to check in when I arrived for my appoint. I dug my phone out of my purse and clicked on the link.

Nothing happened. I tried again. Nothing.

I looked around the lime green and beige room trying to figure out what to do next and notice the kiosk across the room. The sign on the wall said to check in there.

Nobody’s here but me.

OK…touch to start. That went well. Then I was supposed to scan my driver’s license face up. An arrow on the screen pointed to the left. There didn’t seem to be any way to scan over there, but I moved my ID around that part of the screen, hoping. Eventually the screen changed and asked me to scan the front of the license.

I did the same nonsensical movements with the license.

Eventually, frustrated I backed up and gave the whole area my attention. Turns out there’s a little shelf under the right corner of the kiosk with a red light. A red light that scans little cards that are placed on the little shelf.

Huh.

Proof of success.

I felt like I was in some sort of futuristic room waiting for an alien to begin testing on me. A few minutes later a Phlebotomist emerged and directed me into the back. She was very good at drawing blood, and friendly too.

I was secretly relieved she didn’t have an alien head, red eyes or extra long fingers.

I'm a long time banker having worked in banks since the age of 17. I took a break when I turned 50 and went back to school. I graduated right when the economy took a turn for the worst and after a year of library work found myself unemployed. I was lucky that my previous bank employer wanted me back. So here I am again, a long time banker. Change is hard.

  1. Yeah. Ever since I started going to Quest, that’s been the shtick. I must say, I never thought of it the way you did, though!

  2. Our DMV office has one of those. Took me a minute to figure it out.

  3. Ugh. How awful. I mean it’s efficient but I’m with you. I want people, too. I have my yearly blood taken directly at my doctor’s office (I get them to set both appointments).

  4. I guess the next step is learning to have to draw your own –

Imagine what that could do for their bottom line –

  5. Haha! I know the feeling. I was waiting for your ending and expecting a robot to then come and draw your blood!

  6. Oh no! There should at least be a human somewhere visible in case a person has a problem.

I went to an amazon locker recently to return something. Me and one other person were fumbling with the automated return process. Just scan your code and a door will magically open, but….. it wasn’t that easy. A human eventually had to come do our returns manually. Luckily, that person was a former student and her face lit up when she saw me, so amazon’s robotic process was forgiven.

And I personally hate restaurants that just show you a QR code to scan instead of a regular menu! Why can’t I have a hard copy?

    • I haven’t returned anything through an Amazon locker, think I should avoid that. The worse thing I’ve seen so far with a QR code was at local concerts of other community bands. Instead of printing a program you scan the QR code and see the program that way. So all during the concert people have their phones on. It’s so stupid.

  7. Phew! So glad an alien did not draw your blood. Is the lack of staff post Covid? In Maine, the medical staff seems to be pretty much the way it has always been.

  8. It won’t be long before robots draw our blood and administer flu shots. The whole world has lost touch with ‘human interaction.’

  9. All the studies indicate people need other people, yet here we are, killing jobs in favor of machines. What a world we live in. I imagine my late grandparents would have had something interesting to say about all this. Sorry you had to experience it, but I’m glad your blood-draw was with a human!

    • I’m glad too. I remember when I worked at a public library back in 2008. The library introduced self checkout for patrons to check out books and movies. The patrons HATED them. I guess the library was early on in the concept. I wonder if they still have self checkers.

  11. The closest-to-me branch of my credit union has gone down that road. I hate it! The day I was there, a live woman was on the floor to explain the new system, and I told her, “I know that no one cares, but please tell them I HATE THIS!” I added that I did not hate her. She was fine. Yes, I WANT PEOPLE, TOO! This trend has already gone way too far.

    • Way back in the early 80s I interviewed at a credit union in Charleston SC. The job was in training and I’d be designing a program to train customers to use an ATM…at that time customers hated the thought and most refused to use them. What is your credit union automating?

      Like

      • Reply to your question about what my credit union is automating: EVERYTHING! You go inside, and instead of a couple of tellers behind a counter, you face a couple of TV screens. Those are the tellers, but they are nowhere near you in space. They are downtown. This is the first branch to go in this direction, but their plan is to do this to all branches eventually. As you had to do in the medical office, customers are asked to hold their driver’s licenses up to the screen, etc. STINKS!

  12. I’m not a fan of high-tech anything … why does everyone insist on making things more difficult for people? The humans that formerly accomplished this task are either no longer working there or multi-tasking on other jobs. I am too old for this world sometimes Dawn.

    • I know. Sometimes I feel relief that most of my life has already been spent and I won’t have to learn so much more new stuff if I don’t want to. But on the other hand, I feel like I COULD learn more if I stopped resisting. On the other hand (there are at least 3 hands, right) I don’t know that all this new stuff is really necessary or even in the best interest of people.

  14. Funny, on the day I decided to try jumping back into blogging I wander over here and find a post titled, “I miss people!” As I am trying to get back into photography, I realized I miss people too, although in a different way than you posted here. I miss our blogging people! I realize it will never be what it used to be, but I dipped my toe in today and wrote a post.

  15. Reminds me of phone trees. They save the company hiring someone but the collective time wasted by all the people who struggle to get what they want must be huge.

My cardiologist is in a group practice the head cardio decided to use computer person check in and exit. I told my cardio I think its horrible and shows no friendly person as a receptionist. He agreed but said it was not his decision.
