Have I complained here about our local grocery store’s lack of customer service? I know I’ve complained about it plenty on Facebook.
When we first moved to this little rural town back in 1992 we had to drive over 6 miles to a grocery store. I know that doesn’t seem like much, but one of the routes took you over the same railroad tracks 3 times, and back then there were no crossing gates which made me nervous.
I used to think about whether I really needed whatever I was out of before I’d make the trip.

Then a few years after we moved here a big brand new grocery store was built only 2 miles away. And I didn’t have to cross the railroad! I was thrilled! The new employees seemed thrilled!
Life was good.
But over the years the employees have become unhappy, complaining bitterly about their hours, their breaks, who’s working where, who got what shift, when they get to leave, who’s on break…it’s never ending. I really don’t want to hear it while I’m getting my groceries scanned and bagged.
And since Covid there’s no employees to bag the groceries, so I end up doing that myself. I’m a really bad bagger.
And most of the time there’s no cashiers either, the store forcing everybody to go through the self scanners, even with full carts. They even installed a couple of the self scanners with long chutes down to the bags so you have room to do big orders. Of course that doesn’t work well because after you scan it all you still have to go down there to bag and by the time you do that the next person is sending their groceries down the chute.
Routinely only one set of self scanners is open, they don’t have enough employees to man both sets. So that means there are a total of 3 self scanners, plus two with long shoots for big orders and most of the time no human cashier.
It’s a big store, lots of people shop there. I have no idea why.
The lines are long to use the self checking stations, often half way down the aisles. If there’s a checkout person working the lines there are even longer. I’ve tried different times of the day, tried evening shopping, tried middle of the day, middle of the week. It doesn’t matter. There’s never adequate staffing at this store, and those that are there are the most unhappy people I’ve ever met.

The last time I stood in a line with more than 10 people ahead of me, just to self scan a few items, I decided enough was enough. When I got home I logged into their silly survey and told them I’d no longer be shopping there, and don’t bother calling me to explain the shortage of people.
Then I moved my business to the grocery store in town. Same company, worse parking lot, longer drive, more traffic, but the employees are nice! They’re friendly, they’re happy, and they always have at least two cashiers working, and all 12 self scan stations open too. I haven’t been in a line there yet.
And they always thank me for shopping there.
The store is set up differently and it takes me longer to do the shopping, but I’m slowly figuring out where stuff is. Today when I emerged from the aisles a cashier was waiting in front of her empty station. She caught my eye, asked me if I was ready, and when I nodded yes she said “Good! I’ve been waiting for you!”
We chatted as she rang up my groceries. There still wasn’t a bagger available, so I did that while we talked and she scanned. She asked what I used dried cranberries for, and said the salmon looked good.
We laughed about something.
I told her I was driving out of my way to come to her store because the people were so friendly and happy. In fact, I said, look at the back of the shirt on the cashier in the next lane! It said “Fresh, Fun, Friendly!” ”Oh she said, that’s our motto!”

Well, that’s the reason I drive all the way here, I told her. She stopped bagging my groceries and looked me in the eye. ”Did you used to shop at the Davisburg Kroger?”
She nailed it.
“Yep,” I said. She nodded and said “We get a lot of their customers here.”
Give that woman a raise. Customer service is not dead, and I have hope.
I will drive further, park in a small cramped lot, endure wicked traffic, and smile while bagging my own groceries if someone smiles at me while ringing up my order.
Lesson for Kroger: It doesn’t take a lot to increase your bottom line. All you have to do is keep your employees happy. Management matters.
No doubt about it.

I so understand your complaints, Dawn. Though I don’t mind bagging my own (I usually do a better job, anyway!) because we’ve been doing it at most of our stores for years now. Customer service makes all the difference. Whether it’s the produce peeps, the cashiers, the various specialty sections; each have their part in making the experience pleasurable.

Sometimes when I’m putting groceries away at home I wonder why in the world they bagged something together with something else. And then I remember I bagged it.

Damn – this IS a great piece – and yes, their company needs to see it –
As for the self check outs – NOPE – unless they start giving me an employee discount 🙂
I’m lucky that I have a store<0.5 miles away – actually have walked there when the weather is nice – but I do miss the store/chain that was closer to my mom's house – the aisles are wider – and the store just seems nice –
But I've come to accept what I call MyGiant – although they do annoy their shoppers with their Marty – he's a 'robot' – who can clean spills and such –
I don't like him for they don't have to pay him –
Another 'oh their bottom line' example – but in this business environment, it doesn't much extra work to keep the CONSUMER happy – and if they are happy, they'll return – and they might even tell others – MAYBE even blog about it!
Well pawed!

Thanks. I have never seen a robot at our stores, you guy are light years ahead of us! Or behind us, depending on how you feel about automation.

That is some story as we would say in Maine. Makes me grateful for our grocery store in town, where we have none of the problems you described.

I usually do the self-checkout just because I like it. Certain satisfaction in bagging my own groceries.
That is a sad thing about the other Kroger if the new girl knew exactly which store you were talking about. That other Kroger’s manager either doesn’t care about his store or needs to be replaced. Employee attitude means so much.

I think there have been a string of managers at the old store. But the workers remain pretty much the same. Sometimes there’s a new person but I don’t see them for long. Smart employees should go up the street an work for the Fresh, Full, Fun! store!

I’m pretty used to self-checkout lanes and bagging my own groceries (I’m faster and better than most of the employees anyway, ha!), but good for you, telling them your complaint (which seems totally valid to me). Wonder how they can get away with all those grumpy, lazy employees (and I wonder if that’s not just a sign of the times). Seems like everybody wants a corner office, a six-figure salary, and regular breaks for a nap these days — didn’t we use to work lots harder, lots longer, and for far less pay???

I think it’s the management at that store…it seems obvious when the other store 6 miles up the road is staffed with happy people.

As I read this, I was grateful for our Kroger – where there have been times of having to wait in line because of a shortage of employees, but that seems to have been corrected now and the attitudes are good. For me, grocery shopping is enough of a chore that I definitely don’t want grouchy people checking me out.

I don’t like grocery shopping either. So I for sure don’t want to listen to them gripe to each other and ignore me when I’m checking out. Sometimes I went through self service just to avoid a particular cashier. But then I feel like I should at least get a discount for checking myself out.

I’m with you. Customer service keeps me coming back. Not a grocery store but I go to my local Ace Hardware over a Lowes or Home Depot. The employees at Ace are friendly, always willing to help and have at times explained to me exactly what I need and how to fix my problem when I ask for help.

Agree Ace aces HD or Lowes! My husband and I were just talking about how Ace has EVERYTHING, and how do they do that with much smaller stores??!

I am so tired of self-checkout. If they gave me a discount for my time and effort, that would be ok, but they do not … I still pay the same for the groceries, but I have to do the work of checking out and bagging … and someone else has lost their job … and yet Kroger still makes the profit, or even more because they have fewer employees! I’m now shopping at a local co-op for fresh food, and I shop for other grocery items at a non-Kroger store, one with real employees. Dump Kroger!

I agree Kroger is a pain. There’s another store I could go to…but husband likes the gas points at Kroger and that does save us money. BUT…we’ve discussed going to the other store if the 2nd Kroger doesn’t work out.

I think it’s definitely a management problem. If I were Kroger senior management I’d be cleaning house there. I’m sure I’m not the only one to complain, based on the employee at Kroger 2 knowing where I was talking about.

Funny story about the Kroger you dont like. On the inside of the restroom door they keep a schedule that employees are suppose to initial when the restroom is cleaned or checked. Most of the employee initials were the same, “FU”.
The same piece of paper was hanging there for months, many months. I even took a picture of it because I found it kind of interesting to see how long it would be there, unchanged.

Dawn, I shop at Meijer and most of the cashiers there are pleasant but there is one woman who is surly. Until the store had an extensive renovation in 2021-2022, I always did the U-scan with the long chute and just scanned in all my own groceries and packed them. I packed them the way I did, with triple bags and so if I went shopping before work on weekdays, I could just run in the house and knew what bags of food needed the contents to go in the fridge; the rest could be unpacked later. I don’t like the small U-scans with the carousel – it is time-consuming and there’s really nowhere to park your bags. So this woman has an attitude – never does the double bags and if I ask her bagger to do double bags, I get a look. I have had bags break in the driveway as the bags are so flimsy. I once asked if the bags came out of her paycheck – she gave me a crack of some kind under her breath. I have no use for that either. Glad you found an alternative way to shop.

Your cranky cashier should probably be in some job that doesn’t deal with the public. I worked as a cashier in a store one Christmas…it was terrible and not something I ever want to do again, but if you ARE in that position at least be friendly.

I know it – she has an attitude and for no reason. She is the only one who is like that and she has a different bagger each time and I know she says something to the baggers as they are rude as well. It peeves me to no end if I ask for double bags and they give me a sigh. When they used to have the larger u-scan, I did all my own bagging and did triple bags. Their bags are flimsy and I don’t know how many times I’ve lost items as the flimsy bag ripped in the driveway.
