Even though my mother has been gone for almost 20 years, it feels important to acknowledge her on Mother’s Day.

After all I had the best mother ever! She let her band of four kids roam the lake and woods together without getting upset when we came home wet and muddy.

She fixed meals for her family of six every single day even when she’d worked all day at running her retail business downtown.

She supported our interests whether it was music or writing or photography or swimming or boating or building forts in the woods. She encouraged us to be the best we could at whatever we loved.

She sacrificed things she might have wanted to do in order to provide us the ability to do the things we cared about.

She smiled when we painted her a card or brought her flowers from the field, no matter how crazy our art was or how wilted the flowers.

And she loved that we all turned out to be productive and independent people, in no small part because of her.

Thanks, mom, for pushing us and putting up with us and loving us through all the muddy, crazy years. I hope you have the most beautiful flowers up there in heaven, though I’m sure you won’t think they compare to those we picked for you decades ago.

What wonderful memories you have of your mom, Dawn! And I so love that photo of her water-skiing. My mom never tried that and neither did us kids. Remember, fear of the water runs way back in my family history. Anyway, I hope your Mother’s Day is lovely and that Penny brought you something better than one of those red-eyed bugs!!

My mom was afraid of water too. She grew up on a farm, not on water, and she was very worried for her kids. My dad grew up on a river and was a water child at heart. Mom made all of us take all the Red Course swim lessons. Every summer we shivered at the beach as we learned to swim. Mom didn’t like to put her face in the water, so she mostly floated, with her toes pointed to the sky and her hands paddling in little circles. She water skied once a year, just to prove she could. She was nearly blind without her glasses, so water skiing for a woman that didn’t like swimming and couldn’t see was a real accomplishment.

Dawn, I really enjoyed reading your memories of your mother. She sounds wonderful, and I’m sure she’d agree with you that there are no more beautiful flowers than those given to her by her children, not even the flowers in heaven. xx 💐

This is a wonderful tribute to your mom Dawn and priceless photos. She certainly made each one of you strive to be the best you can be and just reading this post and seeing the pictures tells me it was because of her influence, just as you said. I always like to honor my mom for Mother’s Day too – gone but never forgotten.

I like that thought Dawn – my mom always said she would be looking down to check on me from time to time, to make sure I listened to all her advice. 🙂

Your mom sounds like an amazing woman. I love the photo of her on the water skis! Wow! A life well lived.
I think we don’t realize the sacrifice our mothers made for us until we get much older. Then, it can be mind blowing to think about. (speaking from experience 😉)

Yep, I don’t know how she did it. She was pretty amazing and we took her for granted like most kids do.

She may well be surfing now days. Or she may be smiling and saying “I don’t have to prove anything anymore!”

Both my parents liked to be active and do things and go places and learn stuff. As kids we mostly rolled our eyes…but now I appreciate their tenacity.
