Change Is Hard

The official launch of the 2024 Walktober

Well, it’s that time of year again…time to dust off the ole walking shoes, grab your phone or your camera (or both!) and head out to find something interesting or boring, pretty or mundane, to share with all of us in the world.

What’s it like this October where you live?

We didn’t have a lot of color on my walk, but I found a little bit of it!

Interested bloggers want to know!

The most eager Walktober participant I know is our girl Penny, so I’m going to let her kick off this event. She’s so happy she’s darn near panting with joy. Or maybe she’s just drooling. Hard to tell. Anyway…here comes Penny!

Hi Hi HI HI HI HI!!!! It’s me, Penny!

This is me on my Walktober !

This will be the second Walktober of my entire life, cause I’m not even two years old yet! But I remember last year and it was so much fun I could hardly wait for October to come around again.

We hiked on trails like this for most of our walk, but also across grassy meadows too.

Mom says I shouldn’t wish my life away, and time is short no matter what we do. But I’m just a puppy and I try to get as much fun stuff smashed into every day as possible. Mom says I’m exhausting.

Whatever, Mom.

So anyway, Mom took me on a walk in one of mine and Katie’s parks and I thought I’d share it with you as my Walktober 2025.

We started out in Katie’s part of the park and walked up and down the hills. Mom always tells me about Katie when we walk there. I don’t mind, Katie seems like she was a pretty awesome girl and I love hearing about her adventures.

I was quite proud of myself for jumping up on this bank.

After we got up and down the last big hill we arrived at a meadow and Mom had me practice my recall on the mowed path.

I’d say my recall is pretty spectacular…a long as she has treats! HA!

I’m coming, Mom! Get that cheese ready!

Then we wandered through the meadow and back into the woods and over to my part of the park. Mom and I walk over on that section a lot, but we usually enter it from a different parking lot that is about 1/2 a mile north (as the crow flies, lots further if you take the trail) of where we parked this time.

Pretty in purple.

Mom and I wandered around and she took lots of pictures. Eventually we made it to my pond. It was really pretty.

My pond.

It was after we moved on from my pond that things started getting messed up.

I wanted to go back to the other parking lot (which was still about a mile away from where we were) like I was used to when we visit the pond, and Mom wanted to head back to the parking lot we were actually parked in (which was also about a mile in the other direction).

Mom had me stand near the one tree that had changed color. It’s another sassafras tree.

Mom had never gone back to that parking lot from our pond before, but she had a photo of the trail map (because she’s a smart mom) so she wasn’t worried. She studied the map and we walked on a brand new trail that she was sure would take us back to that meadow and eventually back to our car.

There were lots of trails to choose from.

But it was winding through the woods and didn’t feel like it was going in the right direction. And Mom couldn’t figure out exactly where we were on the trail map. It was getting hotter and she didn’t have that much water for me.

So she started getting worried.

How about we rest on this nice bench, mom?

Me? I wasn’t worried! I just kept sniffing and tugging Mom along. Why I even surprised a mouse! Or, if I’m honest, the mouse surprised me, cause Mom says I jumped about 3 feet straight up into the air when I found it!

What’s over here?

Anyway, after awhile Mom decided we needed to turn around and go back the way we had come. That meant we added another mile or so to our hike, because we had to go back to the pond and then back to the trail we had come on, then all the way back to the car!

At least there was shade in the woods!

I didn’t like turning around, but Mom said not to argue with her just this once please, so I decided to be good.

But Mom, we were going this way!

We made it back to the pond, and then back to the meadow and then back to the car eventually. Mom was hot and sweaty and crabby.

I think it’s this way, Mom.

I, however, was a happy girl! Another long Walktober in the books for your gal Penny!

Mom found some interesting leaves and light.

So here’s what you need to do…go do your own Walktober (but you don’t need to get lost) and take a few pictures. Remember you can walk in the woods or in a town, even in your own back yard! You can ride a bike, or take a car ride, or jog or skip or even ride a unicycle!

Just do what you do and then show us your world by writing a post on your blog.

We were lucky to see this monarch butterfly too!

Then link it up to this post and at the end of October my Mom will gather up all your links and put them in one giant post so everybody can visit everybody else’s walk!

Mom says if you need a little extra time, or have questions, just let her know.

Even more purple!

Sound like fun? Then…..ready, set…..GO!

Talk later,

Your Walktober Girl, Penny

Me and my Mom after my Walktober.

I'm a long time banker having worked in banks since the age of 17. I took a break when I turned 50 and went back to school. I graduated right when the economy took a turn for the worst and after a year of library work found myself unemployed. I was lucky that my previous bank employer wanted me back. So here I am again, a long time banker. Change is hard.

  1. fun post!! I can’t tell you how many times my pooches and I…..or I and my pooches (it’s always my fault)… have gotten lost, turning hour- long hikes into frustrating and sometimes scary, long treks. Dogs love it. Humans? Not so much.

Glad Penny enjoyed. The weather had been grand!

  2. Both of my unicycles have flat tires, so don’t wait for that. And these days I don’t like risking falls from ground level, so I certainly wouldn’t want to try the five foot unicycle. In other words, don’t hold your breath waiting for my Walktober submission.

    • Oh no, Ms. Linda! Mom was thinking about you specifically when she said people could unicycle! In fact, you’re the only person she knows that even has one! But we understand…we hope you will enjoy everybody’s walk after we put it all together!

  3. Penny, what a GREAT day! An extra long walk, sunshine, crunchy leaves and time with your momma.

Thanks for letting us walk along with you. My favorite photo is the one of you running toward us. Your beautiful fur flowing. You remind me of your beautiful sister in that photo, but also uniquely you.

Hope you continue to have nice Fall weather and that the yucky winter stuff holds off a bit for all of us.

    • Well, Ms. Sara, I was just a little puppy when we had winter last time, and I remember liking it a whole bunch. I remember My aunt Beth and my dad making a snow man that was bigger than me! I barked and barked at it. This year I hope I’m bigger than the snowman!

Yep, my mom loves to take photos of us shelties running. She thinks we look extra special with our furs flowing like that!

  4. Penny, you are one beautiful dog. Sorry about getting lost, but that was such a pretty walk. How lucky for you and Mom to have that park close by. I especially liked your pond

  5. What a wonderful walk! I know you didn’t mind getting lost and extending your walk, but I can definitely understand you Momma. Especiallly when it’s a hot one!

I’m hoping to go to a completely different place for my Walktober this year. This weekend is supposed to be beeeeeeea-u-ti-ful so I’m going to take advantage of it.

    Loved your post!

  6. Hi pretty Penny! Thank you for sharing your first Walktober stroll of the year. It sounds like you and your Mom had a great time, except when she got turned around. That is so easy to do and can be scary. Glad that you helped her get back on track. I like how you have found your own special places in Katie’s park. Have a great day, sweet Penny! 😊

  7. Happy Walktober at last, Penny!! You did a great job keeping Mom in line and showing us your world. I especially like all that purple, your lovely pond, and that Monarch butterfly. We don’t have too much color here yet, but they’re promising us it will get better as time goes on. Nevertheless, I want to do our walks before the weather gets too cold!

  9. Hi Penny! Let me tell you how directionally challenged I am–I’d have counted on you to lead the way to the car. But your Mom did get some lovely shots–of nature and of you! I really like the one of you running for cheese. Yummy!

    • Hi Ms. Lois! Well, the directionally challenged sometimes get to see the coolest or prettiest things! Mom says it’s all an adventure and not to sweat it. Unless it’s August and you’re lost, then you’re allowed to sweat.

  12. I have just the spot for my walk this year. It’s a place I used to visit regularly, but haven’t been for two or three years, so I’m looking forward to revisiting it. It will be fun to see all the posts again; I really enjoyed this in the past!

  13. A beautiful walk and a beautiful tale by Penny! I hate getting lost and I did just that a few years ago at Crosswinds Marsh, my first time there. I walked and walked and it was August, so it was pretty hot and I finally I saw a woman walking her dog and asked if I could tag along if she was headed back to the parking lot. She was kind and we walked together – otherwise, I might still be walking around there! My Walktober post will be this Sunday, so I will share it here as Penny suggests. I like the picture of both of you – very nice!

    • Oh Ms. Linda, that had to be kind of scary. When my mom got lost with my sister Katie she eventually walked through the trees, off the path toward a road she could hear. But when she got out to the road she was so turned around she wasn’t sure which way to go. She stopped a woman driving and asked her which way was the entrance, knowing the parking lot would be the other way. Then after they walked a long long time and still no parking lot she stopped a park ranger in his truck and he told her the parking lot was around the next corner, and it was! Mom said that was all very scary cause my sister was an elderly dog. But Katie didn’t seem to mind at all.

      • Penny, I have to tell you I have not been back to Crosswinds Marsh since … your poor mom and I’m glad Katie was a trouper about it. I got turned around at Sterling State Park a few months ago, another hot day. I heard cars whizzing by but couldn’t see them. I saw a park ranger and he said I was walking to Downtown Monroe! Oops!

  14. that was quite the adventure for sure and thankfully you have a smart Mom! My photos aren’t nearly as exciting as yours (you saw mine on FB)…….maybe I will try and take more. The problem for me is actually taking the time to BLOG about it lol!

  19. Hi Penny & Dawn. I enjoyed tagging along on your lovely Walktober adventure! I love the picture of Penny after she jumped up on that bank. I’m glad you found your way back, it can be so disorienting when maps don’t seem to line up with where we seem to be heading. The Me and my Mom picture is priceless!

  20. hello! Just found you blog, by way of the Key West Collies blog! What a pretty sheltie you are! Have you heard from the writer of Key West Collies recently? With the recent hurricanes down there, we are worried and hoping they are okay.

    • Hi there, thanks for stopping by. Joe sent out an email that they were fine, here’s the content cut and pasted. I know how it is to worry about people. Florida sure has had more than it’s share of troubles!

      From Joe:

      “Dear Cyber Paw Pals,

Those of you in the storm path are in our thoughts and prays.

As for us, we dodged another bullet.  Some palm fronds in the yard, but nothing much.  We didn’t receive a lot of rain either.  We count our blessings and praise the lord.

      Dog Speed,

      Joe, Gemini & Normandy”

      • Hi! Thank you for letting us know! With all the heartbreaking stories in the news, I was worried. I had to look up where you are located, as your pictures are so similar to ours right now! So you are in Michigan? Do you like to read? Under the topics, on our blog, is a link for our book reviews. One of our favorite writers based her stories in Michigan. You should take a look at our reviews of her books, her name is Dorothy Bodoin, you might enjoy her books.
