Change Is Hard

Who called me a wimp?

Penny here. Of course.

Now normally I wouldn’t be allowed back on mom’s blog so soon after my birthday post. That was only 10 days ago and mom likes to remind me that this is her blog and not mine and if I want a blog of my own I’m going to have to hire my own slave labor.

To celebrate my 2nd birthday mom took me to a fenced in dog place at a state park so I could run. We have only been there a couple of times and both times mom and I had the place to ourselves. I love to run and jump and generally act like a crazy girl so I enjoy it there a lot, even by myself.

But on my birthday, after mom and I were there just a few minutes, another couple showed up with their little terrier. I’ve already forgotten her name but she should have been named Hurricane. (Her name might have been Mandy.)

Cause she was!

She was a few months younger than me and, I hate to say it, she was faster than me! And she never stopped chasing me!

And then, while we were running around, another couple came by with their baby beagle who’s name was Toast. He was only 5 months old and he loved to run too! For awhile the terrier chased him, but he must have been boring, because she went back to chasing me, and let me tell you, I got exhausted!

I started asking everybody, even complete strangers, to pick me up!

Mom said I was a wimp, but picked me up and we sat at the picnic table while the two youngsters ran around. Then that terrier went right up on the table and landed on mom’s head! Well, mom said that was enough and we left to go home so I could get a birthday nap.

Now I’m rethinking asking mom for a playmate for Christmas. I might be a lucky dog after all, even as an only!

Signing off for now,

Your lure dog, Penny

I'm a long time banker having worked in banks since the age of 17. I took a break when I turned 50 and went back to school. I graduated right when the economy took a turn for the worst and after a year of library work found myself unemployed. I was lucky that my previous bank employer wanted me back. So here I am again, a long time banker. Change is hard.

  1. I love your ‘Penny’ posts! Happy belated birthday to Penny. It is fun to see our pups getting out and running and being social. Have a great day and enjoy the week ahead.

    • When she was a little puppy she was fearless, but now she’s more cautious than before. That’s OK with me, she was always putting her nose in places that she shouldn’t have. Now she mostly does that at home where she figures she’ll get away with it. And she does.

  2. That’s a terrier for you! 😂 Or should I say “terror-ier”. Don’t get me wrong – I love terriers but even I think they can be a bit much, especially the young ‘uns! Hope your Christmas dreams come true, Penny and Dawn 🎄

  4. Penny, I’m a bit envious of your fenced-in place to run! I Monkey LOVE to run and do zoomies, but sadly, we’ve had a LOT of rain, so our yard has lots of muddy spots — and Mama is fiercely tired of bending down to give me a foot bath every time I come back inside. I wish I had a place like that to let off steam, but secretly, I’m glad you’ve got the terrier and not me. I am not fond of dogs chasing me, and most terriers have way too much energy. Happy snoozles, friend!

  6. Those little dogs can be little terrors, Penny, no matter how old or young they are. I love the photos of you flying! Look at your furs go! Mom was smart to leave when she did. Santa Paws is not impressed with little dogs who jump on someone’s head!

    • Yes, the head jumping was a bit much. Up till then I was generally OK with the little one. But Penny was tired and wanted some relief so I picked her up (all 26 pounds of her) and figured she could watch the fun from the safety of my lap. Guess not.

  7. Well Penny, I especially like that second picture of you, the fur a’flyin’ but then I also like the last picture, the sedate Penny fast asleep. My guess is you and mom might not go back to that dog park. What was up with the terrier anyway – those rascals are always nipping at your toes!

    • We went back this week. It was cold and windy so we guessed (almost rightly) that no one would be there. There was one young yellow retriever in the other area. That dog’s mom asked if she (and her boy Frankie) could come over and run with Penny, so we tried it. She liked him better than the terrier. And he wasn’t fixated on her, he was mostly chasing his ball and then she’d chase him and then he’d turn around and chase her. But she only did that a couple times and she was done. PLUS it was so darn COLD!

      • Retrievers are so much friendly than terriers, so that was a better outing. Penny was done, even with all that fur?? 🙂 You can go back again this Sunday after the morning rain as it will be 51! My neighbor’s magnolia bush is so conflicted … it had buds the last warm-up.

  8. Penny, look at you fly! You are gorgeous!! Your mom brushes you and combs you and keeps you clean, and feeds you so you have energy and pep and vim and vigor. Your mom is super. And so are you! You are quite the duo (ok, along with your dad too).

    • She says thank you, Ms. Ann! Actually mom needs to brush her more, but she doesn’t like it. Of course. But I SHOULD get credit for carting her around to parks regularly, which she loves.

  10. Oh, admit it, Penny — you had fun! I’d have loved to see that dog on your mom’s head, though. Makes me laugh just thinking about it. My Sunny loves to go to the dog park and has made several friends there. Anyway, you are not a wimp! Excitement tires us all out, but it’s good to have for a while.

  12. OH Penny, I need a nap after reading this. All that running, whew.

But why didn’t those people pick you up? SO rude. Best to leave. They don’t deserve to be in your presence. 😘

    • Haha, I think they were overwhelmed as well. Plus she’s 26 pounds. I remember when Katie was in puppy school and we were letting all the puppies socialize. There were 2 or 3 puppies from the instructors recent lab littler who were all playing together, and Katie who wasn’t the least interested in the other dogs or playing. She spent her socialization time going from parent to parent asking to be picked up. Makes me smile to remember.
