“Oh Christmas Family,” I thought as I drove to band rehearsal last night. “I’m glad we’re not the only people who haven’t unplugged our holiday lights yet.”

The people in this house put up their holiday lights early and leave them late into winter every year. On winter Tuesday nights as I drive to rehearsals I always smile when I see them. And I’m always sad when their lights eventually turn off.
I smile because we do something similar. Each year we put lights on one tree that sits on the corner of our lot, visible from two streets.

During the dark cold winter nights the lights on that lone tree warm me, and it turns out, our neighbors too, who always comment their appreciation of our beautiful tree.

Every winter I leave the tree lit until the end of February. And this year it seems even more important to light my little corner of the world.

These images were taken last night, after our rehearsal, using my handheld phone. Hence the focus. But I wanted to share with you what a beautiful night it was, with stars peaking out of the clouds and an almost tropical breeze. 44 degrees in Michigan in February is tropical.
Trust me.

It is lovely Dawn! No wonder you get so many compliments on it. It’d make me smile, too.

Neighbors across the street love looking at it, as do we. Other neighbors walk in the evenings or very early in the morning and like to look at it too. It’s set to turn on at dusk and turn off when the sun comes up.

There’s a house in a nearby neighborhood that simply switches seasons. Shortly, the Valentine lights will come down and the Mardi Gras lights will go up. I presume they’re not afflicted by an overly officious HOA!

What a beautifully lit tree and I am with you. Why not leave it lit up? Especially if the neighbours also appreciate it. (Instead of complain about it.)
Every time I go to my mother’s I pass in front of a house that is wildly done and remains lit….. hmmm I’ll have to check!

Thank you. So is the house near your mom’s still all lit up?

Yes! I have to go visit her and see if it still is – I’ll share the pic with ya 😉

All of your images are lovely, but I especially like the one of the sky between the two trees.

Me too. The light on the birch trees is from the spruce tree all lit up nearby.

There is Orion above your lit tree… I like the light reflected off the other trees (birch?). Yeah, we have had a couple of unusually warm days and nights.

I didn’t notice Orion until you pointed it out and I made the image much larger. That’s odd because I usually look for Orion when I’m out if there are stars up there. Thanks for pointing that out!

I love that you keep a tree decorated long after Christmas, Dawn! Trees look so magical when they’re lit up and standing in snow. And that one is certainly beautified by Penny, too! Yes, I know exactly what you mean — 44 degrees in February in Michigan is tropical — enjoy it while it lasts because we know winter is far from over! By the way, how did the concert go? I’m sure it was pretty sad, having lost your leader so recently. (We had ours on Monday night, and it went better than any of us expected!!)

Our concert isn’t until April, thank goodness. We might be in better shape musically and emotionally by then. Glad your concert went so well!

Our next one is in April, too. Fingers crossed, we’ll be seeing signs of spring by then!

Yes, tropical, but alas there were huge snowflakes with a snow globe effect today. It got to 57 degrees here when I was out midafternoon and 24 hours later, a wintry mix and 20 degrees colder. The lights are pretty.

We had a tiny bit of floaty snow yesterday too, but not much. It’s definitely colder and damper today. Would have liked that warm stuff to stick around longer.

Your images are all so beautiful. Our lights are still up, too, although there’s no one else to see them except for us. What kind of phone do you have? I don’t think mine would capture the night sky as well as yours did. I love that shot between the two birch trees.

I have a Samsung, which i think does better in low light than my big camera, unless the big camera is on a tripod and on manual settings.

I like seeing holiday lights after December. I know it’s a controversial topic, but I have no trouble with it. So nice to see color at night in gray February.
