Change Is Hard

…but change is certain.

Going earless

Once upon a time, a long, long, time ago (more than 35 years), my husband and I were dating. As Easter approached he bought me a solid chocolate rabbit as a gift. We left it, in it’s box, on an end table in the living room when we went out for the evening.

When we got home the rabbit was partially out of the box, but still in place on the end table, and it’s long chocolatey ears had been bitten off.

The cat immediately pointed a paw at the dog who looked slightly, but not completely, guilty.

Long before we knew anything about dogs and chocolate we laughed at how Daisy the Sheltie managed to nibble the ears off while leaving most of the rabbit still in the box on the table. And to this day when it’s chocolate bunny season we remember Daisy and what a delicate and polite girl she was

No dogs were injured in the making of this post. A hollow chocolate rabbit was, sadly, sacrificed.

I'm a long time banker having worked in banks since the age of 17. I took a break when I turned 50 and went back to school. I graduated right when the economy took a turn for the worst and after a year of library work found myself unemployed. I was lucky that my previous bank employer wanted me back. So here I am again, a long time banker. Change is hard.

  1. Our dogs are magical creatures. They can do amazing things. What a wonderful memory.

  2. Oh my!! It is a good thing Daisy was not ill (though I have known many a dog to get their paws on chocolate with no ill effects!)

    Fun Easter story!

  3. That is a fun memory. I think some dogs are allergic to chocolate and some aren’t. Good that Daisy fit into the second category.

  4. Oh Daisy!! She was a polite little girl and left the rest of the chocolate bunny for her Mom!! 😂

  5. One of my bookstore customers showed me a funny cartoon yesterday on his phone. The dog says, “The cat did it.” The cat says, “Yes, I did it” — and then adds several remarks about how it doesn’t even care. I can’t remember exactly. You had to see it — and I couldn’t find it again online….

  6. Haven’t had a hollow chocolate bunny in decades. Somehow I’m feeling nostalgic. Happy Easter!

    • I know. We were lucky she didn’t get sick all over the living room.

      • Yes – apparently chocolate agreed with her. Years ago my aunt’s dog would routinely get a half a Jersey Milk bar (Canadian equivalent of a Hersheys bar) and when my grandmother and aunt had ice cream, he got a bowl too. He never got sick from those treats – I don’t remember Apache being fed dog treats come to think of it.

  8. Oh man, I need to get a dog (or a cat) so I can blame everything I do wrong on the dog … or the cat. 🙂

  9. My old dog did something similar when I was a teenager 😀

  10. Hi, Dawn – I know all about chocolate bunnies with missing pieces. When I was 11, I won a large, chocolate Easter Bunny in a local colouring contest. I kept him in the corner of our family room and refused to unwrap it’s plastic, or take a bite, because it was so beautiful. Two months later, my mom had had enough of that and said I must now open the bunny. I removed it from its corner…and it’s whole backside had been eaten — not by mice but by my teenage sister! ♡

  11. What a polite sheltie! Daisy wanted to make sure she shared with you. Our dogs are forever with us ❤

    Happy Easter!

I moved into my new home on Friday, and there are lots of wild birds here. I spotted so many red winged blackbirds when I walked Chewy in the morning. I thought of how they symbolize spring has arrived for you. Now, that will be my clue too.

    • Sara, I hope you and Chewy are enjoying the new adventure! So many places to explore! I’m glad you have red winged blackbirds..they will definitely tell you when spring has arrived! They will be here with the last of the winter snow, just making a ruckus and telling you not to give up hope!

  12. Yikes! Daisy’s Guardian Angel-dog must’ve been working overtime on this one. For the record, I’m not showing this post to the Monk, who has been chomping at the bit for four years now to get ahold of some chocolate. Humph!

  15. If a rabbit must be sacrificed in the creation of a post, a Lindt one is an excellent choice 🙂
